subjects for Sense and Sensibility. Elinor, practical and conventional, is the epitome of sense; Marianne, emotional and sentimental, the embodiment of sensibility. To each comes the sorrow of unhappy love: Elinor desires a man who is promised to another while Marianne loses her heart to a scoundrel who jilts her. Their mutual suffering brings a closer understanding between the two sisters--and true love finally triumphs when sense gives way to sensibility and sensibility gives way to sense. Now an award-winning movie written by Emma Thompson.

Advantages: classic book, interesting insights into 19th century life, ironic humour, happy ending Disadvantages: long-winded in places, old-fashioned language may be difficult for younger children
Sense and Sensibility is a classic novel set in the late 18th century, comparing and contrasting two sisters. Elinor and Marianne are devoted to each other, but have completely different temperaments. Elinor is quiet, well-behaved, and thoughtful, usually keeping her feelings to herself. Marianne, on the other hand, is hot-tempered and highly emotional. • Synopsis •

Typical Austen Review ofSense and Sensibility - Jane Austenby
AlexMayer
Advantages: Humour; good story Disadvantages: Formulaic
...Elinor. Whereas Elinor has good sense and is prudent
and full of self control her sister Marianne is
impulsive i.e.- sense and sensibility! However both
suffer trials in love and in the end are moderated by
their experiences. Certainly not just a romance this
novel also contains much humour especially in the
minor characters. It deals with all the usual Austen
themes including family and marriage. ...

Classic Novel Review ofSense and Sensibility - Jane Austenby
Sabrina_imogen
Advantages: Great writing style!! Disadvantages: slow, doesn't seem to hit a high
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austin tells the story of the Dashwood family, focusing mainly on the two elder sisters, Eleanor and Marianne. It follows the losses and triumphs in the game of love and is typical Austin style. She focuses on etiquette and marriage and compares and contrasts the behaviour of the two sisters. Austin is a highly formulistic writer, introducing her characters directly before letting them spaek for themselves. She uses ...

inconsistent Review ofSense and Sensibility - Jane Austenby
red_doyle
Advantages: wonderful and emotive plot Disadvantages: inconsistent to the point where you are enthralled one minute then bored the next
sense and sensibility is a very slow novel that takes a while to get into but i perservered knowing how enjoyable the film was and when i did get into the story around page 100 when events started to happen quickly i was enthralled with the characters and the ploy but unfortunately it does start to slow down again and becomes quite boring.
but for the most part it is a wonderful read that allows you to enter the feelings of the characters but it ... ...when it starts jane austen tries to race through a series of events, one being the girls' father's death, in a short as time as possible to set up the background to the story that will be beneficial to the girl's love lives. this makes it a hard read then the book takes a very nice and enjoyable pace but towards the end it is just boring the events have been dragged out over too many pages and you just want iot to hurry up and finish ...

Advantages: Jane Austen - undeniably one of the greatest female authors Disadvantages: A little long winded but it is nothing if you enjoy reading her books
The book is typical of Jane Austen's style, character developement at its best and at the same level, possibly Jane Austen at her best. All Jane Austen's novels reflect situations happening in her own life and situations relating to the time itself. Her ideas of feminism and the like are obviously way before her time and she must be applauded for this. Generally an enjoyable book with highs and lows, a little long winded but as with everything you ...

Presents us with the subtle portraits of two contrasting by equally compelling heroines. Through their parallel experiences of love, loss, and hope, she offers a powerful analysis of the ways in which women's lives were shaped by the claustrophobic society in which they had to survive.
