Recently, much to my terror, I had to have some dental work done, a filling that was very near to the root and, as my dentist took great delight in telling me, one that would cause sensitivity. Not keen on the sound of that I went out to purchase a toothpaste suitable for sensitive teeth, I chose Sensodyne Pronamel as it not only promised to help with the sensitivity but also protect against acid erosion caused by such things as fizzy drinks, of which I'm a big fan.
Sensodyne Pronamel- Acids in everyday food and drink such as fruit, wine, fizzy drinks etc can dissolve the minerals in our teeth, softening the enamel, as this soft enamel is worn away it will become thinner and our teeth will lose their whiteness, become weaker and more sensitive Sensodyne Pronamel is designed to protect against acid wear and contains fluoride for protection against cavities, it is specially formulated for those with teeth sensitive to hot and cold, it is pH neutral making it kinder to tooth enamel, is low abrasive and can re-harden weakened enamel.
Pronamel comes in a modern looking outer card sleeve, it's white, silver and mint green colouring giving a feeling of cleanliness and freshness, the tube itself has a different feel than most other toothpastes I've seen, it almost reminds me of a tube of artists paint or pva glue, its opaque green lid is designed so you can stand the toothpaste on it's end, ensuring the paste is always at the dispensing end generally tidier looking in your bathroom.
Pronamel comes in tubes of 75ml and each tube has an expected lifespan of 12 months, of course with usage twice a day a 75ml tube is more likely to last you 3 months. The toothpaste itself is white in colour but not as thick as other toothpastes meaning you need to go easier when squeezing it onto your brush. It has a minty taste but not the crisp fresh mint flavour you expect from a toothpaste, there is almost a fruity flavour behind the mint, which during early usage reminded me of blue raspberry bubblegum.
Sensodyne advise that you use the paste 2-4 times a day, while it does contain fluoride it can be used by children under 6 but only using a small amount of paste and when they are supervised by an adult to avoid swallowing the paste. Considering though this paste is designed to protect against erosion by such drinks as wine and for those with sensitivity, which is unusual in children(certainly the wine drinking) I cannot see the need for children to use this particular paste, it's certainly not one I'd use on my children's teeth.
Price & Availability- Sensodyne Pronamel is widely available from supermarkets and pharmacies. I purchased mine from Superdrug at a cost of £2.99 for a 75ml tube
My Experience- I've used the toothpaste for 3 months now and am nearing the end of the tube, I'm a twice a day brusher normally but often found with this toothpaste that it didn't leave my teeth feeling particularly clean or fresh and so would brush more often during the day. Despite the recommended amount of paste and the 2 minutes brushing time my teeth always felt quite rough, I certainly never got the clean smooth feel that I've experienced with other pastes such as Aquafresh or Arm & Hammer. I also found that not all areas on my teeth were getting clean and I had to pay particular attention the top of the top teeth and the bottom of the bottom teeth, otherwise they always seemed to appear more yellow. It also was near impossible to get a real clean feel to the insides of the teeth, something I found myself conscious of throughout the day. There is no real whitening agent with this paste, which I have been used to in other pastes, so I was never quite happy with how my teeth appeared overall.
The tube for the paste is very easy to use, its thicker plastic teamed with it's shape (a wider rounded end) make it easier to squeeze the paste out, it also has wide nozzle (unlike the standard hole in the end of the tube familiar with other branded pastes) which doesn't seem to clog up but makes application of the paste to the brush simple. It's more like icing a cake than applying toothpaste
The paste tastes alright but in the beginning it's difficult to get used to the fruitiness behind the mint, of course all taste buds are different and someone else using the paste may think it tastes great. It's not a flavour I think would be suitable for children. Eventually the power of the mint wares off, I guess you become accustomed to it, it's only after a particularly strong or spicy food that you really notice the flavour of the paste, which of course doesn't help day to day when you want a fresh taste in your mouth after brushing
I can't really say if there's been an improvement in my tooth enamel as I'm not a dentist, it doesn't feel any different and there doesn't appear to be any difference in the look of the teeth, while it is not designed to replace tooth enamel it is meant to harden soft enamel and that isn't something I've noticed. As for helping with the sensitivity, well I'm not entirely sure that it has an effect either. I don't feel sensitivity to cold food or drinks, and I've tried all sorts from chilled water to ice cream, but do when biting down on hot foods meaning I either have a high sensitivity to hot food or the paste doesn't work, something as simple as soft warm bread causes pain meaning I'm not really able to properly enjoy such foods.
For £2.99 I expected a lot from the toothpaste and obviously hoped it would live up to its claims. I don't feel like the paste was worth such a high cost when other pastes, that achieve far better results than this paste did, are half the price. Perhaps with continued usage I might see some reduction in sensitivity or even an improvement in the enamel but I just don't feel that putting up with teeth that don't feel clean, which have an appearance I'm not happy with and lack a feeling of freshness, is worth the chance, especially if a further 3, 6, 9 months down the line and with mounting costs I have exactly the same results as I do now, I don't think I'll chance it.
Would I recommend it? Not at that price, if you want to give it a go shop around and find the best offer or if it's a sensitive toothpaste you're after try an alternative Sensodyne product, at least that way if it doesn't work you've not paid as much.

Advantages: restores teeth, hardens enamel and reduces sensitivity Disadvantages: none so far
I have always used Sensodyne toothpaste because of my sensitive teeth. Over the years I have noticed that they have become more prone to sensitivity if I eat something sour or cold. I have tried many other toothpastes to tackle this problem but found that none did the job like Sensodyne did. Almost immediately you would notice the difference and your teeth would feel much less sensitive.

What is Sensodyne Pro Namel?
It is a new toothpaste that has been specifically made for those people that have noticed the enamel on their teeth become softer thus the biting part of the teeth seems almost transparent in comparison to the whole of the tooth. This can lead to a condition called acid erosion. This condition can be triggered by eating everyday foods, even fruits, they do not neccessarily have to be harmful foods that cause ...

Advantages: clinically proven to harden tooth enamel and protect against erosion, pleasant taste and texture Disadvantages: very expensive
Sensodyne Pro Namel is a tootpaste specifically designed to protect against acid-erosion by helping to harden up tooth enamel, and is also aimed at people who suffer from sensitive teeth and have problems with foods and drinks such as ice cream and fruit juices high in citric acid. It has a pleasant texture and a mild minty flavour that is quite appealing, and leaves you with fresh breath and smooth and clean-feeling teeth, although I cant comment ... ...a condition I suffer from myself. A 75ml tube will set you back around £3 at the supermarket, making it vastly more expensive than supermarket own brands and even regular brand toothpastes. Hardening of tooth enamel is not something thats very easy to detect, but the toothpaste certainly feels refreshing and is clinically proven to strenghten teeth, and given that soft drinks, fruit drinks, desserts and sugary foodstuffs all wear away enamel fairly ...

Advantages: It works very quickly, immediate relief Disadvantages: maybe a bit expensive for some, doesn't remove stains as well.
I purchased pro enamel after having an expensive root canal procedure at the dentist due to sensitive teeth. It got to the point where I couldn't have any hot or cold drinks or food without discomfort. After the procedure I decided to bulk up on a good toothpaste that would protect from acid erosion so this seemed like the only choice on the market for that purpose. I don't really care about price when it comes to health. If it does the job then ... ...weeks of use is that the sensitivity was no longer there but my teeth where also this yellowish from all the tea and coffee i drink. Now usually my standard colgate paste makes gets rid of those stains and all but this didn't seem to do it for me. I tried getting a mouthwash to see if that would help but didn't help the whitening effect either. Its great for what it does. Sensitivity went straight away but if you're a heavy tea or coffee drinker ...
