After recently visiting the dreaded dentist, I was informed that I had a major problem with acid erosion on the enamel of my teeth, which means basically that my teeth are being worn away at a worrying rate. As a result, when reading a magazine, which my girlfriend had bought, I noticed an advert for a new toothpaste from Sensodyne designed to combat acid erosion. That toothpaste was called Sensodyne Pro Namel.
Firstly, a touch of sciency healthy stuff: -
Acid erosion is now a problem affecting more and more people here in Britain. With more fizzy drinks being consumed, the problem is only going to get worse, and even stuff like acidic fruit (oranges, lemons etc) can cause a problem, as can anything with citric acid as a preservative in. Even brushing your teeth to vigorously can cause them to wear away at an increased rate. One of the tell tale signs of acid erosion is if you notice the biting surface of the tooth becoming almost transparent in comparison with the rest of the tooth, also your teeth lose some of their curves and begin to look rather flat along the biting surfaces. If you suspect that this could be happening to you then Sensodyne Pro Namel could be the toothpaste for you.
The Idea behind the product: -
Sensodyne Pro Namel is designed with regular use to help to re-harden the enamel on your teeth and prevent further erosion from occurring. Obviously this does really on the person involved doing their best to avoid hazardous foodstuffs such as cola and other fizzy drinks. The toothpaste contains Sodium Hydroxide, which makes the toothpaste slightly alkaline, thus helping to neutralise any excess acid present in the mouth, again reducing further erosion damage.
Availability: -
The toothpaste I purchased came in a smallish 75ml tube. It cost me £2.59 from Boots the Chemist, although it was on special offer at the time. I would imagine it comes in at around the £3 mark under normal circumstances. This is a rather steep price for a toothpaste, but you must consider that it is well worth the extra money if it actually can help to protect your teeth. I would have thought that you could also pick this toothpaste up at any good convenience store, chemist or supermarket.
The Product: -
The packaging is predominantly the traditional Sensodyne white and green, with the Sensodyne logo and the Pro Enamel logo on the front. On the reverse of the tube are the list of ingredients, directions for use and also a checklist of what the product is designed to do. The tube has a large green cap, which makes it very easy to open and close, although I have found that it is quite easy to put on incorrectly, thus raising the possibility of unwanted leakage!!!
Use of the Product: -
The toothpaste itself is just off white in colour, and has a pretty standard tooth pasty smell. The actual taste of the product is rather hard to describe. It is almost a minty taste with a mildly sharp aftertaste. I must actually say here that the taste is not particularly pleasant, but as the old story goes, the worse it tastes the better it is for you!!!
My Findings and Opinions: -
I have to say that despite the rather bad taste of this toothpaste it does seem to leave my mouth feeling clean, and my breath fresh after brushing. I have spoken to my dentist again, and he thoroughly recommended this toothpaste for the acid erosion condition. I have also noticed that my teeth are not as sensitive since I began using this toothpaste, especially after chewing on really tough foods such as steak, and also when drinking ice-cold beverages. The leaky cap is a minor downside if I am nitpicking, as is the rather high price tag, but I feel it is a price worth paying for improved oral health and for this reason I would recommend this toothpaste for anyone concerned by this acid erosion condition.

I should really get a tube of this, doesn't sound good on the taste front though lol. Good review!

I have used Sensodyne toothpastes in the past but not seen this one. l have been using an organic flouride-free mouthwash & toothpaste for several years now ~ Teeth once strong now seem to be aging like the rest of my body . .
