First book in NUMA series, Serpent by Clive Cussler

Advantages: Fast action, lots of history
Disadvantages: Maybe weaker character development and writing than previous Cussler books

Serpent is a novel by thriller writer Clive Cussler. For those familiar with the works of Cussler, they normally involve a character called Dirk Pitt, but this book marks the arrival of a new character, Kurt Austin. The book is the first in the NUMA series of books, of which more have since been released since this title was published.

The basic plot is that a group called "The Brotherhood" try to wipe from
the record ...
...between the New and Old Worlds. Kurt Austin, Cussler's new character, is the boss of the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA).

The book begins with the destruction of the SS Andrea Doria and MS Stockholm, before jumping forward in time to new conflicts around the world. Austin saves the life of the archaeologist, Nina Kirov, who then helps in his tasks. An ancient artefact from the pre-Columbian times is on the SS Andrea Doria, ... more

A new hero at NUMA?

Advantages: A good way to fill a rainy day
Disadvantages: Slightly predictable

The Serpent By Clive Cussler and Paul Kemprecos Noted as a story from the NUMA files. With this book we are still in the world of the NUMA run by Admiral James Sandecker, but here our hero's are not Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino. Here we have a Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala. In a frontice piece written by Dirk Pitt it is stated that Kurt Austin is a few years younger than Mr Pitt and the two do not look alike.Mr Austen lives in a converted boathouse on the Potomac River and collects antique duelling pistols Mr Pitt says that he thinks that Mr Austin may be better looking than himself because the ladies like Mr Austin, possibly better than himself. No new ground is broken with this book. We are still in the world of the sea and ships. Both above water and below, but we are introduced to several new characters. Both of our two new ...

Review of The NUMA Files 1: Serpent - Clive Cussler

Not Shocking, Or Even Surprising... But Enjoyable.

Advantages: Good, clean, fun. Plenty of action.
Disadvantages: A bit too ludicrous. Too predictable & too similar to other novels.

Browsing through the huge volumes of rainforest that occupy our house in the guise of books I finally game across one that sounded readable and I hadn’t read before. The cover is a deep red (signifying danger?) and shows a rather bizarre animation of a sea serpent strangling a shark. Clive Cussler is hailed as “The Grandmaster of Adventure”, a somewhat dubious definition of a 70-year-old author of 15-20 novels who is hardly a household name and has won no major prizes. However he does deserve some credit because his books have sold over 100million copies worldwide and his efforts still sell well. The cover also reveals that it is a “Dirk PittŪ Novel”, as indeed are nearly all of his novels. ~Dirk Pitt~ Mr. Pitt is the son of a wealthy senator and he is the key member of the National Underwater ...
