Robert Rankin resurrects one of his older characters, Soap Distant, the traveller from "beloooow" in order to give us his expectedly twisted look upon the world of rock music. Featuring appearances from most of his regular characters including Norman the shopkeeper whose idea of gene splicing is to use very small pieces of sticky tape and a good shake of the test tube, this book continues the story of an unusual London Borough. As you would expect there are endless running gags and obscure references but sadly the parts played by the familiar John and Jim are rather sidelined and there is no sign of Prof. Slocombe whatsoever. In all this is an excellent read for a Rankin fan but maybe somewhat lacking the familiarity of other books in the series.
Advantages: Highly Entertaining Disadvantages: Time Travel creates some confusion
This author is SERIOUSly underated!
Everyone should have heard of Rankin - He is a genious!
This book is for music fans, time travellers and anyone who wants a laugh.
The main characters include a guy named Soap Distant, John Omally, Jim Pooley and lets not forget small Dave.
The story begins with Soap and John in a pub discussing penistry. Yes, like palmistry where futures are foreseen etc. but There is one special fortune telller than can read ... ...put the book down.
The diverse novel's primary plot involes a man's musical ambitions. he discovers a band whose lead singer has the ability to cure the sick. John Omally attempts to become their manager to lift off his music career.
Those of you foreign to the UK may struggle a bit as the story touches upon such british topics as Prince Charles, Richard Brason, Michael Parkinson, The Beatles, and lets not forget the well known town of Brentford!

Advantages: Music, Time Travel, Strange Moustaches Etc etc Disadvantages: Time Travel makes me dizzy
I read this book on holiday it was meant to last me through the holiday but I actually read it in 1 day. Mostly because I stayed up all night reading it. This book should come with a disclaimer not to read it when you have a drink as time travel makes you very dizzy and you need to lay down. The characters you meet are brilliant. I loved the character of Soap Distant but this was the 1st time i had met any of the characters and I was a bit confused ... ...through time and sanity. Mostly marred by insanity I think. It contains so many twists I can't even begin to explain the story. You meet Soap Distant (traveller to the centre of the earth) first who seems about the sanest character in the story and like so many people he is chasing his 15 minutes of fame but he comes back to a world very different to the one he left. Richard Branson rules the world you would think he couldn't do much worse than the ...
