□□□ Price □□□

My paperback, ISBN: 0-7445-8205-9 was £5.99. Cheaper versions are available from amazon, priced at £1.38 and the pop up book from £1.84

□□□ The book □□□

This is a non-fiction children's book, the main focus of which is shapes, however it does give a lot of information about animals so is therefore science based as well as maths.

□□□ Sue Hendra / The Author □□□

Sue Hendra graduated in 1994 and has worked as an illustrator of over 70 children's books.

I have listed some of the books that she has written and /or illustrated:

~ Counting in the sea, 1, 2, 3.
~ Dinosaur Dinner
~ Colours
~ Mole digs a hole
~ Overground
~ What's that shape?
~ My Daddy's favourite things
~ Scary Party

□□□ Style & Format □□□

The book is set out in a double-spread fashion. On the left hand page there is an animal asking a question relating to something about themselves that relates to a shape.
On the right hand page there are 3 shapes to choose from, three possible answers and three flaps - lift the flap and see if you are correct.

For example ~ A snake asks 'What shape are my teeth?'

On the right hand page there is a triangle, circle and diamond.

When the flap is lifted there are some facts relating to the snake. Under the circle the following is written, 'No…but my eyes are shaped like circles. My eyes stay open even when I'm asleep!'

Under the diamond flap the following facts are given: ' No.. but the pattern on my skin is shaped liked diamonds. My patterned skin helps me to hide among the rocks.'

Under the triangle flap ~ 'Yes! My teeth are shaped like triangles. My sharp, pointy teeth are called fangs.'

A range of animals are looked at in this book: hamster, starfish, beaver, goldfish, owl and a rabbit.

At the end of the book seven shapes are shown on the left hand page and the reader is asked to find the shapes in the drawings of the animals on the right hand page.

□□□ Educational Values □□□
When I initially bought this book it was for the sole purpose of helping to teach very young children about shapes. However so much more is given than just the basics.

~ The following shapes are looked at and discussed: triangle, oval, star, circle, rectangle, diamond & square.
~ Develops sight vocabulary for the shape names as the word is always shown next to the picture of the shape.
~ Colour recognition can also be developed; the purple circle, the orange rectangle and so on.
~ Introduces children to animal names and not just the bog-standard ones!
~ Gives interesting facts about the animals, e.g. the goldfish breathes by sucking water in to it's mouth, it's fins are shaped like triangles and help it balance in the water, the owl has good hearing to know when it's enemies are near, the beaver's tail pushes it along when swimming etc..
~ Develops fine motor skills with lifting the flap up.

□□□ Illustrations □□□

The book is very brightly coloured with vibrant colours that appeal to young children and helps hold their attention.
The drawings are simple and bold and is pitched at just the right level for the age range that it is intended.

□□□ Verdict □□□

I highly recommend this book for those of you with young children.
They enjoy lifting the flaps to see if they are right, learn to recognise and name basic 2D shapes, develop their colour recognition skills and learn quite a few facts about animals all at the same time! A great educational book which is fun!
