What is Sharepeople.com? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Basically Sharepeople.com is a great online stockbroker, owned by american express.
What can you do? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Basically you can trade stocks and shares without having to ring up or visit a premises based stockbroker. Plus being online iot is far more efficient and costs less to run. This means that sharepeople.com can pass the savings directly onto you! You can now also look at Free advise on Funds PLUS you can open an ISA online (See drawbacks - 2)
So how much does it cost then? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Trading fees vary depending on what exactly you are trying to trade, but for most transactions it is around £13.50 which is very competitive compared to other leading online stockbrokers. It is even better when you compare it to premises based stockbrokers. **SEE SPECIAL OFFERS (BELOW)**
Any good features? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Of course! I have already mentioned the fact that you can have ISAs and invest trusts, but there are more special features than just this. You can also set your welcome screen to show you exactly how much you have made (or lost) in a day, you can view advice online, view various graphs and statistics, plus a whole lot more.
A useful feature that I came across the other day on Sharepeople.com is that you can set Ceiling/Floor prices for trades. For novices (like me) this means that you can basically set a maximum price you want to buy for and (I'm not sure about this though) a minimum price you want to sell a share at during a day.
This feature has actually saved me a few hundred pounds over the past few months when I would have actually bought at a higher price if I hadn't had that feature in use!!
Of course, other online sharedealing programs can also probably do this (I assume) but the interface in sharepeople.com is very friendly and makes it much easier to do this.
Any Special offers? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The good news is that the answer to this question is Yes. There were several good offers avaliable on the site when we joined. The best offer that I can reccolect was around £150 put in your account for doing a certain amount of trades. Once I had taken away the trading costs from this bonus I worked out that they were still giving me money, thus I was in profit! I believe that this offer is still avaliable to new customers, but you may need to hury! There are also a few other good offers such as reduced management fees on most trusts. This could lead to around 1-2% extra profit for you every year! I believe that this offer is fairly unique to Sharepeople.com, but still shop around!!
What is the site's speed like? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Internet-Speed-Wise I must say that I personally have found the webpages always very fast to load. I have a 56k modem which is fairly average, but I am sure that this service would be EVEN FASTER if you have broadband internet access or better.
Transaction speeds have also been very good. Most of my trades seem to have been completed within 20 minutes (which incidentally is roughly how long quotes are delayed for). I have never had any problems when trading such as the wrong quantities going through. The main reason for this is probably because of their multiple confirmation screens that make sure you do nothing accidentally.
Any drawbacks to this service? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As with any service there are a couple of downsides to it:
1) Since the service is an online based service you obviously get the occasional glitch (i.e. no response when you click a link). However, I must say that this site's up-time is very good and I personally have never had any problems with use. I suppose if you have a good computer then you are enevitably going to get much less problems when using the website.
2) [AS DIRECTED TO FROM ABOVE] One downside with their online ISA's is that you still have to be sent a piece of paper to sign before you can activate your ISA account. This is slightly annoying as it is an "Online" service, but I belive this is nothing to do with Sharepeople.com, it is merely a technicality (Legal I think)
3) The third drawback (if I can call it one) is that all UK legal rules still apply to the service. This means for instance that you still have to pay stamp duty and you also have to be at least 18 to use the service. This also still causes slight annoyances such as with the isa's, mentioned above.
Conclusion ~~~~~~~~~~ Sharepeople.com is an excellent service to use if you are not really an expert, like me. It has many special features and great benefits, plus it is very friendly to use.
I would reccomend this service to anyone looking for an easy to use, competitive online broker with many great features. I have also given it an excellent in most areas below as it is so easy and fun to use.
If you do join don't forget to look out for some of the special offers that I have already mentioned - especially the free cash one.
Advantages: Very easy to register and use - current information Disadvantages: No facility for placing stop loss sell orderss
I am a moderate investor (£3-5k) and enjoy playing the market. I joined Sharepeople.com mid 2000 and have had no real problems with the account. As I put aside a set amount each month to invest I have set up a direct transfer to the Sharepeople.com bank account. This is by far the easiest way of doing it as they bank through Royal Bank of Scotland and finding a branch is about comparable with finding hen's teeth!
Registration is simple and very ... ...trading is easy. The ability to set up a range of "virtual" accounts to either learn on or to monitor shares that you are interested in is very benificial. The ablility to be notified when your shares hit triggers that you have established can save you a fortune if any of your investments go into freefall. The fees are reasonable; for new comers there are special deals so the trades can be as low as a flat £5. One improvement that I would love to ...

Advantages: Perfect for the novice trader. Great value and service. Disadvantages: Slow website.
I joined Sharepeople after seeing various adverts and I am very impressed with their service. I used to trade using my bank who would charge either £20 or 2% whichever is higher. Well Sharepeople charged £17.50 for a trade (no matter the value of shares bought). What's more this charge has been reduced to £14.50 for trades under £1000 and £17.50 thereafter - pretty good value. Whats more they have waived the annual £50 fee. The website is pretty basic. You can create the usual "virtual" portfolio and also keep track of your shares on the main portfolio. There is a link for free shares news. You can also trade on the American market too. There is a service to send share prices to your email address which is free or to your mobile as an SMS message at a charge of 20p per message. Although the features are simple ...

I've been trading with sharepeople.com for several months now and I can recommend their service. However, users should be aware that virginmoney.com actually links to sharepeople.com but only charges £14.95 per trade, as opposed to £17.95 a trade by sharepeople.com.

Advantages: nominee service cost efficiency Disadvantages: Lack of services clumsy looking website
Sharepeople is the third online broker I've used and at present seems to be very efficient and cost effective.
I first used barclays stockbrokers which has to be one of the cheapest but also probably the worst with certificates going astray and T10 settlement being too long. Their price improver is the highlight of their service.
Sharepeople provides a cheap nominee account service. Mine's free but I signed up early. The 17.50 trade cost does make ... ...as most Private investors do. Dealing in NASDAQ stocks can be expensive roughly £50 on a £1000 invested but the system is efficient and most stocks are covered if not ask them directly and they may start dealing in them. OTBB (sim to aim / ofex) is unavailable.
Company reports and letters are forwarded onto you asap and generally an alround good service. The only drawback is the lack of information / news available on the site and the relatively ...

Incompetence cost me hundreds. When I first joined I sent them my share certificates wishing to sell them. They said that they couldn't sell them without transfer forms. In the two weeks it took them to send me my certificates back the tech stocks took a dive and I lost close on a thousand pounds. They were also very slow at answering the telephone, a 20 minute wait was not unusual. I also found that I couln't use my internet account and although I emailed and telephoned them nothing was done about it leading to higher commissions. I could go on but I dont want to bore you with my complaints. I am in the process of transfering my shares to sharepeople and yes they are going to charge me £30 a holding to do this. Good Riddance

Advantages: Set limit orders. Sharedealing game with prizes. Disadvantages: No virtual portfolio
order to sell shares is not quite the same as applying a stop-loss system. The stop-loss system enables you to sell if the shares falls within a price band rather than falling below a certain level. This prevents your shares being sold too cheaply if there is a big drop in their value.
The portfolio service is also excellent although it is a shame that unlike Sharepeople you cannot create a "Virtual Portfolio" which allows you to pretend to buy shares just so you can monitor its performance. However, you can go to the online game to do this. Whilst viewing the portfolio you can access a lot of information on your holdings by clicking on icons which allows you to view information such as charts, news and company profiles.
The website is nicely laid out and it is pretty quick. So far I have not experienced any problems with reliability ...
