THE STORY
This starts with a crab running along the sand, tapping on shells of creatures with homes. They won't let him in, and it's at this stage children realise the importance of the crab finding a safe home, because there are children all over the beach, and not only that, but a gull comes swooping down to get him. Crab hides in an empty shell "his wonderful home for one".
He is joined by an anemone who wants to share and although crab is at first reluctant to share his home, he lets first anemone then a bristleworm into his home. They move happily about the rick pool, helping each other until they get too big for the shell, and start to argue.
Time for a change so they split up and find different homes and each pretending to be happy with the new arrangement. Children love this picture with them sitting so glumly in their new homes- a paper cup and an empty ice cream tub.
But oh dear, there is a storm which smashes their homes, but washes up a beautiful pink, and very glittery shell. At first they are too proud to share until whelk tells them that the house work has been done and the new home is ready to move into.
Cue a happy ending with the three friends "Rocketing all round the rock pool in their wonderful home for three!"
ILLUSTRATIONS
These are bright and cheerful, and the simplicity of them is sure to appeal to children. The animals and seaside scenes are exactly as children would try to draw them, and the whole thing is made even more appealing with the glitter. All excellent for children who are usually very tactile.
the expressions on the creatures' faces are a treat, and children warm to them as they go through happy and sad emotions.
The text is dotted around the page, and not necessarily in straight lines. If there is a curve of a pool, the writing curves round the pool, and if the animals are afraid, the text becomes small and stacatto.
OTHER BOOKS BY THE AUTHOR
Lots of well known books including The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's Child. The books tend to be in rhyme and beautifully illustrated.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
Mine is a Macmillan book and cost £5.99. For the quality of the book, and if you enjoy Julia Donaldson's books, it's probably worth buying a new one. My copy has been rubbed by lots of little hands, and the glitter has not started coming off, but it could be a matter of time...
WHAT I THINK
Great book. It follows the fears and fortunes of Crab, Blob and Brush on their journey across the beach, through a storm and finally to peace and friendship (hopefully lasting) in the rock pool.It shows children the importance of friendships, and how we can help each other because we all have different skills, and as such can be enjoyed by children older than the initial story theme would suggest.
Children love the illustarations, the glitter and the rhyming, repetitive text. Little Miss learnt the text quite quickly so she could read it to me, and so be the first to rub the glitter!
A great book, and one which I would suggest most children would enjoy.
Advantages: Teaches children to share Disadvantages: This version is a limited edition
...it is a version of Sharing a Shell by Julia Donaldson. This is a slightly different version of the book but as it's a limited edition I didn't think it was worth suggesting a new category.
***The Author***
Julia Donaldson is famous of course for writing the award winning book, The Gruffalo as well as many other lovely rhyming books for children. Her popularity amongst children is spreading very quickly and every book is a delight to read.

Drawn by Lydia Monks, these pictures to go with the story are excellent. The colours are fantastic and the expressions on the small creatures' faces are lovely. In the rock pool, the movement of the water can be shown by the seaweed, which seems to flow all over the pool and ...

Each page is adorned with Lydia Monks cheerful illustrations, which are so bright and colourful. Each page is as enjoyable as the last and the glitter enhances the illustrations perfectly. It's definately a book to keep, it's so nicely presented. I always try and encourage Caitlin not to tear or throw books about anyway.

...delightful experience. Sharing a Shell is a wonderful childrens book written by Julia Donaldson, and illustrated by Lydia Monks. It tells the story of a homeless crab who is looking for a shell. After several unsuccessful attempts at trying to share a shell with various sea creatures, Crab is severely exposed and nearly eaten by a seagull! Fortunately he scuttles away and is stumbles upon an empty shell. Phew! Crab settles in a rock pool, and this ... ...to any collection.

This has to be one of my daughter's favourite books. She's had it since she was about 4 months old, and back then she just liked to sit on my knee and look at the pictures, but now at 18 months she loves to hear the story over and over again, and even knows some of the lines and says them along with me.
The rhyming and bouncy text is ideal for babies and toddlers and it is one of the stories that I don't mind reading 10 times a day! The pictures ... ...young baby's attention, even if they are not interested in the story. My daughter loves to point out the crab and the 'blob' and the shells as I am reading to her, and I often find her sat on the floor pretending to read the story to herself and gazing at the beautiful illustrations.
I hope that when she gets older she will learn the meaning behind the story too.
I cannot praise this book enough. ...

Illustrations
This book is illustrated by Lydia Monks and as far as I know she has also illustrated sharing a shell by JuliaDonaldson. The illustrations in this book are lovely and the glitter really adds to the book and turns it in to a real girly book, she has done the story justice.
The pictures illustrate the story well and the glitter gives details to the picture. The princess in all the pictures has glitter detail on her so when she has changed in to something, like the fish, it is easy to find her. This then gives ...

the story alive.
As I type I can hear the gentle lilt of the text and the subtle jokes which make it a joy to read, not just for the children but also for the adults. How does she write such a succession of good quality stories?
I would say that this story was aimed at 3-7 year olds and once read will become a firm favourite by all members of the family.
This book won the Early years award for best preschool book in 2004, the Blue Peter award for 'best book to read aloud' in 2005 and the Giverny award for Best Science Picture book in 2007. The audio book won the spoken book gold award for the best audio for 6 and under.
