After losing my beloved casio calculator two days before my GCSE maths exam (all those years ago :p), I rushed over to WHSmiths to see if I could find something that would begin to compare to my stalwart electronic abacus. I needed something affordable, durable and easy enough to work out how to use in my remaining two days. The answer? The SHARP EL-531VH
LOOKS ********
The first thing that attracted me to this wonderful calculator was the fact it stood out so well, being a wonderful translucent blue colour, I figured it would make it that little bit more difficult to lose! The screen is of a fair size, providing enough room for digits to be clearly seen, as well as space for the current mode to be displayed and one line of complete playback. The buttons are clearly labelled, with white font on the blue background, so it is easy enough to see what each button does. Secondary and tertiary fuctions ot each button are in white and yellow above the button, respectively. The calculator comes with a protective slip-on cover (also in blue) to help prevent any damage to the LCD display. It also has a reset button on the back, only reachable with pencil/paper clip.
FUNCTIONS **************
Of course, it's all well and good having a decent looking calculator, but if it can't help you do the sums, what good is it? Fortunately, this is not the case with the EL-531VH, as it has everything I have needed for GCSE and A level maths, and then some! As well as handling all of the common functions with ease (addition, subtraction, square roots etc.) The EL-531VH is fully equipped to handle all major scientific calculations. Everything in GCSE and A level syllabuses is covered by this calculator; trigonometry, statistical analysis, correlative figures and more are all easily handled by this wondeful piece of equipment and, being a SHARP, it has pretty rapid processing time, too. The only functions lacking from the calculator that may have come in handy are graphical ability (i.e. the ability to plot and solve graphs) and equation solving. While these features would greatly help in class work, the fact that calculators with these abilities are often banned from examinations means that it is rendered kind of useless in the big exams!
INSTRUCTIONS ******************
A small slip of card inside the protective cover provides instructions on how to do some of the more complicated functions, Standard Deviation being the most prominent one. Apart from that, there isn't a great deal of instruction, but the calculator is so easy to use that most features can just be picked up with experience.
PRICE *******
I picked mine up for around £7.99 in WHSMITHS, but this was a few years ago, I expect availability to be alot less now.
Overall, I think the SHARP EL-531VH is a wonderful piece of kit, and is more than suitable for everyday sms, as well as more complicated equations.
Thanks for reading.
