I was a previous gx10 user for about a year and then recently have upgraded to this model, so in this review I will be often talking from a point of view of whether it was a worthwhile upgrade. I've also never owned a nokia so my only experience for comparison will be limited from other people's phones.
The thing that impressed me the most as soon as I opened this up was the amazing increase in resolution over the gx10, both in pixels on the screen and on the camera. While the screen pixels doesn't make so much of a difference being able to get in more detail on the camera at long range is definitely a big advantage.
The camera in itself is a big advantage of the phone, while not quite up to the megapixels of phones in Japan
and the most recent models here it's surely a big step up from the gx10 in terms of resolution. Also a flash on the front (doubling as torch) is helpful in combatting the problem that the gx10 had of not being able to take photos in dark areas very well.
Also a very important feature of this phone to some people (myself included) is the polyphonic composer. When I was chosing a phone to buy I couldn't find a single other phone on the market with this feature, and if you've got a bit of time to spare you can make some really great ringtones and save lots of money on not downloading them.
Finally I was impressed with a high degree of customisability (sp!) in the profiles, much more so than I've found on other phones. Something I personally like in this is being able to change the colour of the light for different profiles, but obviously this is a more personal thing.
What is adequate?
The battery time is fine when you're on standby, however it will quickly wear down if you're doing something on it due to the bright light it produces. I advise buyers to turn the backlight off at most times unless you really need it to see the screen.
The ability to put pictures on the front of the phone is nice, however it can be a bit hard getting the right size to put on the front as it's a very small screen compared to very large pictures! I've yet to actually put any of my own pictures up due to this issue, so really the frontal screen remains a novelty with simply changeable background patterns (i.e. use one of the default pictures or anything small).
The memory is reasonable although I did find myself having to delete some pictures once or twice from the phone memory. One qualm I've had with both the gx20 and gx10 is the low amount of txts they are able to store -I seem to repeatedly have to delete them all after about 15-20 whereas Nokias and other makes can usually hold up to about 60. However there is a handy 'delete all' option which makes this faster.
While the flash is fine for dingy areas the camera still has trouble seeing anything in the pitch black even with the flash turned on, and it makes very little difference except at close range. However hopefully there shouldn't be many instances when you need to do this!
Things I don't like about the gx20
The texting system (T9) is the most annoying thing about this phone. I can text much faster using a nokia system and this is considering I txt with this every day and rarely use a nokia. Cycling up and down through words is a nice idea, but it'd be even nicer if it could actually remember words I put into it and get the right one first time. Often I find myself having to add common words like 'lol' about once a week as the phone seems to forget them if I don't use them in every text.
Also after all the hype Vodafone Live is still a disappointment. There's nothing useful there that you can't download on a free site (i.e. games or ringtones) and the WAP is so slow I sometimes feel that they are just trying to keep me there as long as possible to make me spend more money (which actually is probably true).
It's quite difficult to find your way around the phone compared to a normal nokia set up -the menu system can be confusing and it's not always immediately apparent where what you're looking for is accessed, however once you get used to the hotkeys you can access a lot from the front screen.
Leading on from hotkeys I find it very annoying that you can access the internet simply by pressing one button at the start. Often I do this by accident and sometimes not realising this so it can really build up the phone bill if you aren't careful.
The final disadvantage of this phone is also one of the deciding factors -you can only get it on Vodafone. This very nearly deterred me as I was very happy with O2 prior to the gx series and texts are quite expensive until you get on pay as you go with Vodafone.
In conclusion this is a good phone, but a few important disadvantages may discourage you from buying it (mainly don't get it if you text a lot).
