Sharp SD-AT 50 DVH

Advantages: multi region feature, excellent audio and video quality
Disadvantages: manual supplied had no english section

...Within the last 2 years I have purchased two other DVD players in the Toshiba range, an SD210E and an SD110E. The range-topping SD330E was purchased for its multi-region capability which is essential if playing DVDs from abroad. A multi-standard (NTSC/PAL) TV is another essential component for a small home cinema system based upon the SD330E. I use a small, 13 inch, Sharp LCD TV which is stacked with a whole range of features including automatic NTSC/PAL switching. Curiously the SD330E bears very little physical resemblance to its predecessors. It is the same width and depth of its cousins but only two-thirds the height. The most striking difference between the models is in the weight of the SD330E, which, thanks to switch-mode technology used in the design of the power supply, is very light and creates an immediate, first acquaintance... Advantages: Excellent picture and sound quality, easy to use, good build quality
Disadvantages: Doesn't play CD-Rs, no optical digital output, doesn't play R1 RCEs easily

...The Toshiba SD-2109 may not look the business but inside that dull shell is one hell of a player. I bought my SD-2109 just over a year ago. I enjoy movies and DVD seemed perfect for me. After looking through several magazines, it was clear that the SD-2109 was performing extremely well in the reviews. It wasn’t too much and so I bought one and boy have I not looked back since. The picture quality is superb and the zoom function really shows this. Compared to other players that I’ve seen, the picture is sharp and the colours solid and none of the detail is lost. The sound is just as good although the outputs are limited. The SD-2109 does not have a built in Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder although it does output using the digital coaxial both DD5.1 and DTS. Advantages: quality natural picture, numerous input options, great price, 720p HD
Disadvantages: Few - if any. You would benefit from a quality surround sound system

...I have owned this for a year - it is excellent 720p native HD resolution (will also accept 1080i) The PX70 series are true 1080p HD but for me - there is not enough HD material available to benefit and it will be a few more years before there is. One con: my old 42" SD plasma displayed SD pictures better. This clearly needs to convert SD to HD in order to display it and it is not perfect (and no HD screen that I have viewed is). This observation is about HD screen in general. The plasma picture is so much more natural than an LCD. Full colour range with great contrast. I paid £1150 and no regrets - especially when you consider I paid £1500 for a 32" Sony Wega 10 years ago!... Read review
