Being a fan of all things spicy, I was delighted to receive a free sample of Sharwoods Thai Red Curry Paste with my monthly subscription of Fresh Magazine this month.
The sample contained 50g of Thai red curry paste, enough it said to make a curry for 2 to 3 people with the addition of a few simple ingredients.
Friday night in our house is usually "Curry Night", either homemade or from the local Indian takeaway. This week it was "Make It Ones Self"- I say that like that because it is usually me that does the making !!.
The pale green coloured cardboard sleeve that protected the clear plastic sachet of paste, boasts that this Thai Red Curry Paste is made using fresh ingredients such as lemongrass, garlic and chillies, typically Thai I thought.
Having a change from our usual Indian Curry, I set to work slicing some lean rump steak into thin strips ( you can of course by these ready sliced from most supermarkets) and fried it gently for a minute or two before opening the sachet of paste with a pair of scissors, which could just have easily been torn as it had one of those little nicks on the side. The contents were squeezed into the pan with the steak, stiring carefully I made sure all the meat was covered in this rich, red / brownish looking sauce, having let that cook for a minute I added a can of coconut milk and a thinly sliced red pepper, another stir, covered with a lid, turned the heat down a little, then left it to cook whilst I shredded some spring onions ( to use as a garnish), and cooked some noodles to serve with it.
The aroma in my kitchen was to say the least exotic, the smell of lemongrass, lime and coconut wafted gently beneath my nose, making a pleasant change from the usual Indian. Being unable to resist any longer I removed the lid from the pan, inserted a small spoon which I filled with the delicious looking sauce- WOW !!, this was good, a kick to the back of the throat from the chillis and the creaminess from the coconut was simply divine. After several more tastes of this rich red sauce, I concluded dinner was ready to be served.
And served it was, garnished with light fresh shredded spring onions alongside creamy white noodles it looked the perfect picture, goodenough to grace any cookbook or cooking related magazine - what a shame I didn't have my camera handy !
The result - Clean plates all round and whimpers of "Is there any more ? " made me think that perhaps this 50g sachet was actually better at serving 2 rather than 3.
This freebie made a deliciously fruity, creamy Thai curry, with enough kick to satisfy even Bruce Lee, if this sounds a little too warm for you then maybe Sharwoods Thai Green Curry paste would be of interest to you as it is much milder in taste.
This curry paste has been approved by the vegetarian society, it is also free from artificial flavours, colours and preservatives, unfortunately the lable does state that the paste may contain Peanuts, Nuts and Sesame Seeds, which will no doubt be bad news for some.
I was so impressed with this freebie that I shall be making a point of finding this paste in the supermarket, in the hope of re-createing this fantastic curry again, and as it is so simple may be, just may be, I won't be the one doing the creating.
Go On Give It A Thai, I Doubt You Will Be Disappointed.
After weeks of searching, I have at last managed to find this product in a large Tesco, A 415g jar is priced at £1.55 and a sachet style packet just the same as my free sample is priced at 89p
Advantages: taste, ease of cooking Disadvantages: none
In my opinion Sharwoods are a very good company that do lots of different pastes. As I had recently been to Thailand and tasted their authentic curries, I wanted to find somthing that was as near as possible to the taste of Thailand. Luckily, I found it in Sharwoods. I didn't have to spend ages fiddling around preparing the curry base, it was already in the jar. It takes a short time to cook, and the aroma whilst cooking is super. The aroma took ... ...party, and curry was on the menu. I wanted it to be extra special, so decided to use Sharwoods. My guests all said how tasty it was, and luckily I had done a big pot of it, so we all had seconds. Really delicious.I would recommend this product, very nice indeed. ...
