What phrase enrages you most? "How are you spelling that?" perhaps, or, "issues around"? When the question came up in the Letters page of "The Daily Telegraph", hundreds of readers nominated the ones they loathed, and thousands more were posted on line. Provoked beyond endurance, Christopher Howse and Richard Preston compiled "The Infuriating Phrasebook", drawing on written and spoken insults to the intelligence from television, radio and the press. Infuriating and entertaining, this A-Z lexicon covers politicians' cliches, business jargon; shop assistants' rudenesses; public-service padding; menu madness and idiotic innovations. "The Infuriating Phrasebook" is sharply illustrated by the "Telegraph's" award-winning cartoonist Matt. All right - You all right there? A patronising enquiry made by nurses to old ladies already humiliated by being addressed by their Christian names. It is also used by shop assistants to customers who have been waiting a long time for service. Blue-sky thinking - Species of daydreaming for which businesses are usually billed by the hour. It can lead to thinking the unthinkable or saying the unsayable [qv]. Enjoy! - An order issued by waiters or baristas [qv] after they have delivered yours. First invented by - The second inventor is deservedly less well known. I'll let you go now - But you'll buttonhole me later. Inappropriate - Used by officials who want to blame people for behaviour that is not illegal or forbidden. The patient used an inappropriate tone when raising issues around ward cleanliness. Jus - gravy. Pan-fried - instead of being fried in an old dustbin-lid. Serving suggestion - On the label of a prepared meal, a warning that the plate, tablecloth, and accompanying boar's head shown in the picture are not included in the small plastic container. Spiral out of control - Residents feared that costs for the leisure complex would spiral out of control. When aeroplanes spiral out of control they go downwards. Spiralling costs seldom do the same. See also: Escalate. You're a star - Excessive and therefore patronising term of thanks for the performance of a routine duty. See also: legend, hero.

The young boy goes through a lot and as the story unravels and he discovers the murderer he discovers more about the past than he was to know.
‘A beautifully written book.... Haddon is to be congratulated for imagining a new kind of hero, for the humbling instruction this warm and often funny novel offers and for showing that the best lives are lived where difference is cherished' The DailyTelegraph

Advantages: Fantastic insight into the mind of a troubled youngster, Great price, Great for all ages and both sexes. Disadvantages: None
...As I’m not one for reading, I wouldn’t initially have thought of doing a book review as my first proper op. I have never been a big reader, but my other half certainly makes up for me, and we have just lined the spare room with 16 bookshelves that are now filled with everything from Encyclopaedias to DIY books, and from Enid Blyton to Tom Sharpe. She recommends books to me but being an impatient man, I get bored if nothing happens in the first chapter, and give up. Just to stop her whining, I decided to give her most recent read a try, and was surprised by what I found…
Written by Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night-Time is a murder mystery novel with a twist. The ‘detective’ and narrator of the book is fifteen year old Christopher Boone, who lives in Swindon. Christopher has Asperger’s Syndrome, which is similar...

Advantages: A great insight into how a child with Autism views this world; thought-provoking Disadvantages: Strong points of view exist (see review); not too addictive; not very long
...is a strong boy, aged 15 like me, and can protect himself for sure. The trouble is, many people whom speak to him don't know what they're letting themselves in for. Christopher doesn't disapprove of strangers simply on the grounds that his special school has taught him to be wary of them; he personally doesn't like speaking to them, as he doesn't know them. He likes to have great details about a person's daily life before he actually goes about talking and being friendly with them.
He also hates being touched, even by non-strangers. He will become very annoyed, on edge and perhaps violent when he is touched by another person, which is why it's good to really get to know his personality before you go doing anything else.
EXPLANATIONS
Christopher explains his actions thoroughly - in fact, it's a little patronising to the average reader, as you...
