Advantages Lovely duo scented candle, long lasting scent, good all round product.
Disadvantages Can be deemed expensive but it does burn slowly.
Two years ago I discovered Shearer Candles of Scotland from gifts I had received as leaving presents and it wasn't before long that I searched high street shops to buy more of the range on offer, before discovering the company online. So far, after trying quite a wealth of different ranges such as their Spa Watermelon and Coconut candles, I couldn't resist trying a candle in their frosted glass jar range called Persian Lime and Grapefruit - and duly ordered the product online direct from Shearer's of Scotland as well as my previous favourites. What I got in the post was a full size scented tin as well as the glass candle as a thank you for shopping with them.
I've since bought this product again a year later and Shearer's have now changed the label on the tin, restricting the info to only show "Persian Lime," in green lettering on a white background. Rest assured however, that it is still the same fragrance on offer. One tin costs £3-50 and for the burning time this tin gives, it is good value for money - considering that Yankee Candle's comparatively smaller votive candle gives you 15 hours of claimed fragrance, but half the scent on offer and usually half price or the small Housewarmer jar at an average £5-99 with 40 hours burn time and probably about the same kind of strength, dependent on the scent available. To my mind Yankee Candle don't produce the same kind of scent that Shearer offer here, so at least you're getting something that is unique.
Here is a delightfully fresh candle, hand poured and with a lead free wick to minimize on paraffin after tones after the candle has been burnt, revealing a fizzy lemonade top note with thick hues of sweet, juicy grapefruit and a few tones of rose to give this candle a lovely friendly flavour and light, fragrant longevity.
When used for travelling however, I make sure I get the best out of the Shearer tin. In hotel rooms where air conditioning ruins the air, often dries out my throat and has that stale, clinical smell in bathrooms, the tinned candle makes an ideal accessory that is safe, discreet but above all so handy to just take with me.
Persian Lime and Grapefruit is a great mask candle that covers up tobacco smell fairly well but when it comes to burning food, it can take up to an hour before the candle deals with pongy kitchen odour and the candle will only be able to work satisfactorily when doors are closed over and no windows are open. Of course, it isn't a candle that is so marketed to combat general odours but rather a candle to enjoy the fruity fragrance that beholds within the wax.
As with all candles you do have to have general common sense and not leave this lit unless you are sitting near to the candle or at least can see it! Although the lid is there to act as a air tight seal, it doesn't fit onto the base of the candle for good reason. As with all scented tumbler candles, be it glass or metal, a level surface allows the candle to get the best opportunity for equal burning.
The candle tin itself is quite thin and in use can get hot. Luckily the base is heat insulated, but even as a precaution I always put a drinks coaster down. The lid of the candle has a thin plastic acrylic strip that shows off the wax, and after use, if you wish by using hot water to lift the last part of the wax out, the tins make good storage tins thanks to their clear tops and metal sides.Blackening or production of black smoke seldom happens with this tinned product because of its small size and wider diameter. Bunching however can occur, which makes sense to pull the burnt bits off before lighting the candle again for fragrance.
All prices are given on average with VAT included:
Luckily, Shearer's of Scotland do produce other variations of this scent, although I do like the frosted jars, I find them to be quite expensive compared to the small tin version.
Similarly, the scented small jar is frosted and looks exactly like the tin version here - yet it costs an extra £1 for the same burn time.
When rooms in my home are left with a strong citrus combination scented candle, I've often had headaches or felt that scents can be too sickly sweet. However in the case of Shearer's Persian Lime & Grapefruit, the scent delights me, is undoubtedly refreshing, doesn't induce coughing or sneezing and usually lifts my spirits.
