Sheffield United - Blade for Life
For those who do not follow the sport, I think it is quite hard to appreciate just how mental draining watching football matches can become for those passionate fans who follow their club or country wherever they may play. Over time, football has captivated the hearts over the international arena and it is now the most if not one of the most widely played and followed sports in the world!
I myself played football until the age of eleven or twelve and would have liked to have continued, but my cricketing playing commitments had got too high, and I could no longer give my team the drive that I needed to perform. Despite the fact that my cricket commitments got too much for me to continue playing the sport, there was no chance whatsoever that anything was going to stop me from supporting my beloved Sheffield United, a club that I have now been a season ticket holder at for twelve years since I was just two years old, sitting sleepily on my Dad's knee in those days, oblivious to the fact that the arena which is fortress Bramall Lane, would soon by the place where I would experience so many contrasting emotions when I got older.
United are currently placed 5th in the second tier of English football with a firm objective of gaining promotion back up to the top flight this season. Their manager is currently Kevin Blackwell and their club captain - Chris Morgan.
Just a few bits of information about United:
**History**
United formed back in 1889, where they played on their present ground, Bramall Lane, as a way of keeping the Sheffield United cricket club, who played there during the summer, together as a team! It was also used for generating income for the cricket club to use! Gradually, the football team took over and supplanted the cricket team, such that by 1975, cricket was no longer played at Bramall Lane! The Blades most successful period was arguably a 30-year period from 1895-1925, when they were champions of England in 1897-98 and runners up in 1896-97 and 1899-1900, and FA Cup winners in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925, finishing runners up in 1901, and also eleven years after their cup final win in 1936. Despite much success in their time, United obviously had to contend with much disappointment also. Their darkest days were the 1975-76 to 1981-82 seasons, where three relegations in six seasons saw The Blades drop from the top-flight to the fourth division. The Blades managed to climb up the football rankings again with Dave Bassett as manager masterminding successive promotions in the 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons, to put United back in the top flight in time for the beginning of the Premiership's inception in 1992. Sheffield United have also a unique bit of history, their player Brain Deane back in 1992 scored the first ever goal scored in the Premier League; a record that cannot be taken away!
**Ground**
Sheffield United play their home games, as stated above, at Bramall Lane, in the suburb of Sheffield. The stadium can boast being the oldest stadium in the country that hosts professional football, marking its 150th anniversary in 2005! The stadium has been expanded, but it still remains the oldest ground! Bramall Lane is a typical stadium for the level of football it hosts; stands on all four sides of the ground. To the north is the John Street Stand, the south is named through its position - the south stand, to the east is the Kop and the west, the Bramall Lane stand. The stadium has a capacity of 32,609, which despite never being totally filled, is usually right up there at around 27,000 people. When the Blades are in the Premiership, it will touch 32,000!
**Kit**
Sheffield United play in red and white stripes, but the colour of their away kit does vary over seasons. Like most teams, the Blades have their sponsor across the front of the shirt!
Advantages: We know we can do it Disadvantages: Alot of cynical fans out there need winning over
If we get off to a good start i think alot of fans will come back to the Lane. They've lowered the price of the kop to just £10, so getting that filled for each game will lift the roof off the stand, with the noise the good old days used to bring. Every team gets a lift by the support of their fans, so fingers crossed for a good start from the Blades and everything will fall into place.
I went to the friend'y at Tideswell and saw some of the new ... ...judge them properly as to what they'll be like when the season kicks off, but George Santos really shined, he's got pace, ability to pass, win balls and a good shot on goal, all built into a strong massive figure.
Keith Curle also look good, lets just hope he's got a couple more years in him,his experience should come in handy.
The rest of the squad looked bright and fresh, i'm hoping it'll stay that way and we can really have a crack at staying ...

Advantages: Always Controversial, Never Dull Disadvantages: Always Controversial, Not for the faint hearted!
...directed towards our bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday, but our finest song is the legendary "Greasy Chip Butty Song" which usually makes at least one rendition at each game including away matches! I won't go into who is good and bad in the team, as this opinion will probably (hopefully?) outlast all of the current squad. Just check the league position in todays paper to find out! So what are the Blades prospects for the long term future? If I'm ... ...alsoran. The fan base in Sheffield is dwindling, and when the derby against the Wednesday can't fill the grounds, then it becomes apparrent that the sort of support you need to really challenge in the big time does not exist. When the likes of Wolves, Derby and so on can get bigger crowds from smaller cities, and in lower league positions, then we're not likely to see regular 30,000-40,000 crowds at a Blades game, even if the stadium were extended ...

Advantages: Good side. I like their playing attitude Disadvantages: not a top 6 side
Sheffield United. The better team in sheffield at the moment and they deserve to be. they had a tremendous spout towards the end of last season and managed to climb several places at the closing of the season. I think they will improve as time goes on but this season I can't see them making the playoffs - i THINK they will finish in the top 8 perhaps 7th. They are a proffessional team with a nice stadium - very large for a Division 1 side. so far ...
Advantages: A good squad Disadvantages: Money worries as always
...over Sheffield Wednesday, and will win the playoff final against Watford. Also, a great 6-1 victory tonight, i was there, they should have got more ! Devlin played great as did Curtis Woodhouse, give him a chance Warnock. In other words, "watch out we will tear through any defence!" ...
Sheffield United will fail to win D1 or get promoted to the premiership until they buy some more quality players that will live up to the standard of the rest of the high class players in D1. Until then, they will continue to fail in their promotion attempt.
However, I do feel they will win the Derby. United are now the better side I feel as Wednesday have lost or are losing the few quality players they have. Both Sheffield sides are going to have ...

I went to watch Notts County play in a pre season friendly against SheffieldUnited, County have some fast forwards and looked good going forward, i did however notice they could do with some kind of play maker in midfield, someone who can hold the ball up and spread passes about, far too much county were rushed into loosing procession. they certainly didn't look short on fighting spirit. They trail 3-0 and come back to draw 3-3 in the end. Carry some of that spirit into the league and they should do well. ...

Advantages: Outstanding servant at club and international level Disadvantages: Bloopers in big games & THAT ponytail!
? that is how important a servant he was to the club over the years. Even in his last year at Arsenal he produced world class saves of note against SheffieldUnited and Southampton in the FA Cup (semi-final and final respectively) that were key for the Gunners in retaining the cup. During his England career his greatest moment was probably during Euro 96 where several key saves, including a penalty during the shoot out against Spain, turned him into a national hero.
Unfortunately for all goalkeepers they will always be remembered more for the mistakes and for Seaman these happened to come in some very important games. The Nayim lob in the last minute of the Cup Winners Cup final against Real Zaragova and the fluke of a free kick by Ronaldhino that eliminated us from the last world cup against Brazil, are prime examples. It is rather ...

Advantages: A very strong side that belongs in the premier division Disadvantages: None
The second season that rovers have been in this division but they are now stronger than ever. This will be graham Souness first full season in charge changing the team around to suit his type of football.
Blackburn rovers have started this season of in a pretty good way having losing only one game that was to Sheffieldunited by two goals to nil they will go from strength to strength. The players that Blackburn has in their squad are top quality that should win the title or get promoted into the premiership.
And remember that there new signing Craig Hignet has not featured in any of rover?s games this season, this is why I think Blackburn will get automatic promotion and they will want it desperately for the millions that Jack Walker has put into this club who died earlier this year ...
