This Shell D40 is part of the Rimula range of oils, this version being suitable for use in larger Diesel engines, mainly commercials, such as buses and trucks. The oil is marketed at applications like this because this is an old fashioned type of oil. It is a High quality monograde oil, not multi-grade, and as such is designed for high load applications, especially in warmer environments. Let me just say that it is not only suitable for the Paris - Dakar run, a high temperature environment can be in the engine room of a boat or ship, a pump house, or anywhere the ambient air is not immediately cooled.

It is particularly recommended for use in normally aspirated engines, not turbo charged ones. It also lends itself to use in stationary engines, such as pumps and small generator sets with intermittent operation. This is a good oil for reducing the effects of corrosion in engines when not in use.

The specification meets API CF/SF and the oil is available in just about any size you wish to mention, 1, 5, 7.5, 10, 20, 50, and 209 Litre!

So, in a nutshell (pardon the very small pun) this oil is for static engines, big Diesel engines, commercial and industrial ones, with no turbo, Oh and not for our winters - yes it is out of date, but there are still so many applications left that Shell still deem it worth marketing. If you have an old boat or static engine, you are probably glad of this.

Availability, OK not easy to find, but when you do find a stockist, it will be cheap, just make sure your engine will benefit from using this. I will not list any Health and Safety information, oil is perfectly safe if used correctly. Likewise I will avoid telling you not to pour the old stuff down the drain.
