In the UK we currently already pay extorniate prices for our petrol so why would i recommend paying even more for what some believe to be nothing more than just advertising hype?
Well, i can only speak from my own experiences in regards to Shells Optimax unleaded but for me paying the extra 4p a litre more is a small price for a far superior product.
'What is Shell Optimax?'
Shell Optimax is a higher octane fuel available in both diesel and unleaded, standard unleaded petrol has an octane (RON) rating of 95 whereas Optimax is rated at 98 RON, basically what this translates into for you and me is that Optimax burns alot faster, cleaner and also offers a far superior performance to 'most' cars especially noticable when pulling away from lights or round-abouts whilst also offering a better mid-speed accelaration improvement.
'So you expect me to pay an extra 4p per litre just so i can pull away quicker?'
Well no, but Shell Optimax offers far more than just an improvement in performance, the fuel does burn more cleanly and contains far less harmful ingredients to both your engine and to the environment, Shell Optimax actually cleans your entire fuel line, carb, injectors and valves as you drive and the more you use it the better your engine will perform and in theory (but as yet not fully proven due to the relative newness of the product) could make your engine last longer.
Shell Optimax was strenously tested and assisted in manufacture by the Ferrari formula 1 team.
My own experience with Optimax is that my car genuinely does perform better, not just in accelaration but also in general with regards to smoothness and 'ticking over' the improvements ive noticed are certainly not psychosematic, they are real, my engine sounds quieter and really does run smoother.
Some people have commented that Shell Optimax hasnt improved anything for them and they cant see any difference over Tesco's fuel (for example) my only reply to this would be that to see any noticeable differences you would need to fill up with Optimax 4 or 5 times and resist the temptation to add £5-10 of 'cheap' fuel in between as this lessen the benefits of Optimax, cars fuel systems do get clogged with gunk and carbon over time and these can take a little time before Optimax removes them sufficiently for you to notice any differences, but when it starts to work (immediately for some people) then the improvement is very noticable.
Its difficult to try and sell something to you that you already pay too much for but all i can say is that Shell Optimax is far from a gimmick, it really does work (for me at least) and with regular use your car will run better and may improve your MPG, Shell claim that you may see benefits of between 3-7% improvement but i must admit i have to argue these figures as circumstances for each driver would differ far too much to place any kind of accurate figure on this, i would however like to add that i have seen improvements in fuel consumption but they are minimal.
For me i really like the idea of a fuel that cleans my fuel system whilst i drive, that fact combined with less harmful ingredients to the environment alone warrant me paying the extra pennies for this fuel.
Overall it is an excellent product that does deliver if you give it time, putting a tenner in your tank and expecting instant miracles is perhaps a little naive, give it a go for a few weeks if your car is running sluggish (or even if it dosnt 'feel' like it is), you may be pleasantly surprised, i know i was.
