Some time ago my wife bought a DVD player that came with attached TV set.
This worked for a while but recently has been breaking down. Last week it did it again, and even though the set has been taken back to the seller, the DVD portion still does not work properly. The TV part works fine.
The DVD player that I have attached to my computer is supposed to be multi region but it also has stopped playing some DVD'S (not those ones I don't get them and anyway do people really do things like that?)
So I had a rather upset wife on my hands and my ears were taking rather a beating. Once she had left the room I went online to see what could be found. Rather to my surprise I found great difficulty in getting any details from this site. So as a person in good standing (except I was sitting down) I though I should find out.
So
being the wonderful, modest person that I am I went to Amazon where I found the Shinco models. You may not have heard of them but I understand that they are an OEM manufacturer and are the maker of some other famous brands (which ones I do not know but have heard Toshiba, Walmart, Bestbuy, Audiovox, Hyundai, RCA, Thomson and Sharp). They do appear to manufacture most of the units sold in the world and have received some very good reviews worldwide. They do have a higher contrast ratio on screen than some others for better picture clarity.
Well I found several, but this is the one I bought. It arrived very quickly, ordered Friday night, delivered Monday.
There are a large number of sellers on the net and you may want to check prices and delivery. I chose Amazon because I trust them and have an account. I have tried to get goods at other sites and had problems getting my details accepted. Well you don't want to know all that.
This model is a Shinco 5" portable.
What you get in the box is the set. A mains adaptor, a charger unit and a lithium battery that takes 6 hours to charge and should last for 2.5 hrs of playing. There is also a remote control, a lead to attach to a car cigarette lighter and leads to attach to TV or TV and Stereo units. You do a get a 12 mth guarantee, but this has to be sent to Singapore. They do not do an on-site repair service, well sending a repair man from Singapore or China would be rather costly. You may have to send your unit to China if it breaks down. Possibly not worth it.
There is a comprehensive booklet in English and Chinese. The whole unit is silver finished and is multi region capable from the box.
The whole thing weighs in at about 650gms.
Copied technical bits:- Dolby digital and DTS sound output from its built in speakers HDCD decoder stereo audio output muti angle / subtitle capability zoom and frame by frame play parental lock control intellectual upgrade function auto power off screen saver/power saving function built in anti shock system.
I am not even sure what some of these are. It is not the latest HDTV or Blueray technology. I am not even sure that these are available yet.
The unit is very easy to operate from the box. Plug in the transformer and power lead, turn the power switch to 'ON', Open the lid and drop in the disc. The screen lights up and loads up. Depending on the DVD you will have a choice menu. Select 'PLAY' and away you go. The screen is very clear and the sound quality is good. There are many switches and ports that are on the sides of the unit given the small size of the unit. It does pay to check the location and function of each with the instruction book first though most are self evident. You may find that you want to adjust the sound volume as they seem to be rather quiet when first started.
There are other functions mentioned in the instruction booklet for altering the colour of the screen and setting TV output, but you may not need to even look at these.
Possibly the only disadvantage is that there is no carry case or earphones provided in the box. If you wished to use this on a long car, or train journey, then earphones in a train would be a good idea. Also a spare battery as the one supplied only lasts about 2.5 hrs. I do not know yet if it is possible to get hold of a spare battery. I have not seen any advertised but I am still looking. I always like a spare and I do not want to experiment with other rechargeable batteries. There is a lead to attach the unit to the car cigarette lighter unit. This appears standard with all models.
My wife was very pleased with this unit. One of my better decisions.( I also bought a 12". Same bits in the box but with a carry case as well. You know that they say, men always have to have the largest size around)
Price. Well I paid £89.99 for the 5"and is available for 24 hr delivery, but stock is going fast. You may not be able to get a 5" but there are many other sizes available such as: 7" 8" 8.5" 9" 10.2" and 12" Prices do appear very competitive.
Shinco head office is located at Chan Zhou in China. They do have a web site but it is very slow to load and navigate. They have English and Chinese pages. The address if you really want it is:- http://www.chinashinco.lalasho.com/parse/parse.ecgi?block_id=2

well, the reason I commented is that when my DVD gets too hot (as it does with "extended play") it seems to distort the picture - so I stopped mine in a hurry and waited for it to cool down before continuing - as mine is a "multi-region" player, and the DVD in question was a region 1, I was not sure if it was the fault of the DVD or the player, but I was taking no chances . . . - ♥♥ -.................................................................................................... ~ ♥ ~ jes ≈≈≈≈{; -)-{{::::: |||||< ♥♥

I have a portable DVD player bought some years ago from the Gadget Store (I think - online) - it was an essential purchase as I do not actually own a TV - although it came with additional leads to attach it to a TV so you have a bigger screen. I think my screen might not be much bigger than 5" - and has a battery unit or will run off the mains. As it runs hot if on for a while - it is only really suitable for watching a single film - it would possibly not cope with a long film like Gone With the Wind, the Sound of Music, or Aviator. Does yours run off mains as well as battery? and does it run hot as well? . . . - ♥♥ -.................................................................................................... ~ ♥ ~ jes ≈≈≈≈{; -)-{{::::: |||||< ♥♥
