Rebecca Bloomwood is doing really well for herself. She has a great job as a financial advisor on a daily television show and she has managed to pay of her overdraft and all her store cards. Things could not be better for her especially as she has a new man in her life. Luke. Rebecca’s boyfriend is taking her away for a weekend on their first holiday together but Luke manages to fit in a business trip which upsets Rebecca. Whilst on this weekend break Rebecca learns that Luke is planning to move to New York to start a branch of his company over there. Rebecca is worried as Luke has not mentioned this to her.
Rebecca returns home and soon discovers that Luke asks her to go with him. The couple decide to take a 2 week holiday there to see how they like it. Rebecca is thrilled as she thinks of all the new shops which she will be able to visit. She does promise her flatmate Suzi that she will not overspend as she has been spending a lot recently but the temptation is just too much for her.
Luke and Rebecca head to New York where Luke is spending all his time trying to finalise this business deal whilst Rebecca is left to the shops and soon discovers that New York is an amazing place for a fan of shopping. As this progress in New York a lot of possibilities open up to Rebecca for work but will something from her past come back to bring all her new plans down and what will the outcome of this be with her relationship with Luke and her life in England?
I love the first book so was excepting a lot from this one as well. I can honestly say that it did not disappoint me. I thought that Rebecca was again a great character and I liked how this followed on from the first book. I felt a whole wave of emotions during this book and at times I did feel really sorry for her and could imagine myself in the same situation with all those famous shops just calling for me to spend in them. I like the way her relationship with Luke was put across and how it was not all sweetness and roses. I think this did help take away from all the shopping and bring a different side of both characters out.
The book is very easy to read and follow and the only criticism I have with the book is that I did not want to put it down. I did in fact manage to read this in only 3 days as I just got so hooked on the story and wanted a nice outcome for both characters, not that I am saying this is what happened but this is what I wanted.
I did find the addition of some new characters a nice change and I found this added a little more depth to the story. I think the way Sophie Kinsella introduced them all was good and made it easy for me to get to know them and enjoy their small parts.
I enjoyed how between most of the chapters we had a copy of some of the letters which Rebecca was getting and I think this added to the story and made it seem more real. I think that the story could quite well be real as it bet it has happened to several people who enjoy shopping, I mean I have at times over spent when out shopping and not been able to refuse a nice new handbag or pair of shoes I have seen but luckily I have never gone as far as Rebecca.
The writing style throughout the book is great and I am now so looking forward to starting the next book, Shopaholic Ties the Knot.

I do recommend this book to all who like the first but saying that you really don’t have to have read the previous book to enjoy this one as things are refreshed in this book as you read it. A full 5 stars from me.
Advantages: Easy read Disadvantages: Can be predictable in places
I bought Shopaholic Abroad by Sophie Kinsella for a 6 hour flight to New York (which is very fitting for the book) and I could not put it down. This book is very funny, cleverly written and easy to read (which is what I like on any journey).
I feel the character Rebecca Bloomwood is very realistic and believable, as I know someone who is very like her. Sophie Kinsella describes in detail the feelings Rebecca has when she goes shopping and I can ... ...those feeling myself when I go shopping. I think we all have a little bit of the Rebecca Bloomwood inside us all especially when we have bought something on impulse and when we have got home we don't know why on earth we have bought it. We all have our little moments when it comes to shopping, that feeling when we walk into a department store and think this store will meet all our needs and wants, or simply justifying to ourselves that buying a new ...

Advantages: Fun book, light read Disadvantages: Doesn't take long to read
...a big fan of the Shopaholic Series and Sophie Kinsella books in general.
The shopaholic series comes under the chick lit category as it is not deep and meaningful but rather a book to keep you entertained. The books are about a girl called Becky who as you can guess from the title is a shopaholic. Shopaholic abroad is the second in the series following from The Secret Dreamworld Of A Shopaholic. The first book had seen Becky, a financial advisor, ... ...boyfriend later on. Shopaholic Abroad is the story of how Becky ends up going to the US. Her relationship with Luke is going great, she has a fab job as a financial advisor on TV and everything seems to be going well for Becky. Luke is offered an opportunity he can't resist to go and work in the New York. He decides to go and visit to test the waters and takes Becky with him in the hope that she can share his new life over there. Becky is obviously ...

Advantages: a great read Disadvantages: i'm getting way too involved in the characters lives,
After reading the first novel in the shopoholic series, I felt compelled to read the next after realising it was part of a serial.
I found I had gotten into Rebecca’s life so much I wanted to know more and more about her, and whether she was going to manage to stay out of debt after struggling with it for so many months.
Shopoholic abroad shows Becky travelling to New York with her beloved Luke. She’s now a star on daytime television giving financial ... ...I wont give away the storyline, but the book wouldn’t be brilliant if it didn’t have some if not a lot of tragedy, and unfortunately for Becky this involves being in debt.
I truly believe she doesn’t know how to curb her spending, and this novel carries on to show how brilliantly Becky can get into debt, how she hides it from everyone, and how she somehow manages to get through life pretending everything is normal.
We still see all the original ...

Advantages: A very good read Disadvantages: Need to read other books in series if you want some things clarified
themselves out and you can't help but like Becky - she comes across as very funny and likeable. There are very funny situations in the book, which made me laugh out loud, look out for the part when she is at a baby show and pretends that she has a baby in the pram, or when she pretends that she is in labour early so that she can visit Venetia.
There were parts that I was confused about in the book. Quite early on it made it clear that Jess was Becky's long lost half-sister, and that she'd been looking for her - although it did not elaborate on the relationship or how Jess came about to be lost. The writer (SophieKinsella) has written other books in this series, though, such as Shopaholic Ties the Knot, ShopaholicAbroad, and Shopaholic and Sister, so it is possible it is the feature of the latter book. So, really you need to read the other ...

looking for anything deeper then this is not the book for you. (This makes the recommend to potential buyers tricky. Yes I would recommend it to people who enjoy chick lit. No I would not recommend this to people who like a depth to the books they read).

I am a member of Mango the book club and a couple of months ago ?Can you Keep a Secret?? featured as the Editors Choice for the month along with a couple of other books. I jumped at the chance as I have read and loved the ?Shopaholic? series. I was that desperate to read this book that I totally forgot that I had ordered it from Mango and almost bought it whilst I was in Tesco one night.
Written by SophieKinsella, Can you keep a Secret? is the fourth book she has written, the previous three being a series entitled ?The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic?, ?ShopaholicAbroad? and ?Shopaholic Ties The Knot?.
