***Background***
This book is the fifth one in the Shopaholic series, which has made author, Sophie Kinsella a household name. The books all feature one central character, Becky Bloomwood, who is a major shopaholic and despite getting herself into all sorts of debt, she loves to keep buying things.
Sophie Kinsella has also written a couple of other books too but it has to be said that there is something special about this series of books.
***The Story***
When we left Becky at the end of Shopaholic and Sister, she had just discovered that she was pregnant and this brought new pressures for her, along with her husband Luke. This book starts with Becky struggling to get her husband’s attention, as his PA business is taking off after acquiring a big new client.
Whilst shopping for baby clothes one day, she overhears a couple of other mother’s discussing their obstetricians and finds out about Venetia Carter, who delivers lots of famous people’s children. Becky hears all about the tea parties and the welcome packs that come with this package and can’t resist getting an appointment.
What happens next is something that Becky doesn’t expect. She finds out that not only did her husband go to college with Venetia, but that they had a fling too and this gets her a bit worried, especially when she hears that Luke has been hired to promote her business and that they are having cosy chats together.
Turning to her friends and family for support she struggles with this until finally she has it out with Luke to find out the truth once and for all. Will it all go wrong for Becky or will it just be another storm in a teacup?
***The Characters***
Becky is one of those characters that you want to shake sometimes. She has no sense of realism when it comes to budgeting, despite her background in financial journalism. She is also very caring and lovable at the same time and you have to feel sorry for her at times, as all she really wants is a happy home with a loving family.
Luke can be a bit offhand at times and I suppose having been pregnant myself, I know how insecure you can become when you are getting bigger by the day, feeling totally unattractive and there seem to be beautiful women everywhere you turn. Luke isn’t very good at understanding Becky’s insecurities and brushes her aside, although we do find out that there is more to what’s going on than meets the eye.
Venetia is a Grade A b***h in this book. She is still madly in love with Luke after all these years and is willing to do anything to get him. She takes advantage of Becky’s delicate nature and plants all the seeds in just the right places to get her wondering what’s going on. I found her a despicable character who I quite frankly wanted to punch in the face.
Other characters from the earlier books are in this one too, such as Suzy, who is Becky’s best friend and has been with her from the first book, helping her out and giving her lots of shoulders to cry on. Her long-lost sister Jess is also in this book too and the relationship between the two of them, continues to develop throughout.
***My Thoughts***
Although there are reminders of the previous books in the series throughout the book, I would say to anyone that it would be best to read the other’s first. The main reason for this is that it not only shows the scenarios that have occurred in the past, but how the characters have developed and how the relationships between them have gone from good to bad then back again.
I find this very refreshing as we all fall out with people from time to time but this book shows that people can move on, move away and still go back to trust old friends and family.
I must say that I don’t get a lot of time to read books myself, as most of you will know I tend to spend most of my time reading children’s books to my son. However, this book was definitely one that I couldn’t bear to put down and I found myself picking it up even when I knew I only had a spare 5 to 10 minutes. I was totally addicted to it.
Becky is really quite a strange main character. There are times when you just think that you want to grab her and tell her how silly she is being about possessions and the next minute you want to grab her to give her a hug and a bit of reassurance. She is basically a very good person at heart but is a bit easily led into the world of fantasy and this isn’t helped at all by her mother and friend Suzy, who encourage her to look at all the expensive catalogues for the fanciest of baby equipment.
Most pregnant women will be able to understand what Becky is going through as most of us have had doubts about our relationships at this very stressful time in our lives. Although we are looking forward to have a baby, there can be lots of other pressures around and this book shows that it doesn’t just happen to you, although often not to the extremes in this book.
The way the book is written is ingenious. As well as being written in first person by Becky there are lots of letters at the start of each chapter, that Becky has received and these show what financial decisions that she is making without them being discussed much in the main body of the book. These are based on the fact that Luke and Becky disagree over investments for the unborn child and they decide to split it down the middle to see who will make the most money. This letter idea carries right through from the first book and I find it to be a charming addition to the main storyline.
This book is very easy to read and if you liked the previous books in the series then this one is a most definite must have. I can’t wait to find out what happens next in this fantastic series.

...a shame after the fab Shopaholic series. So when I found out that she had bought back one of my favourite fictional characters, I hoped that it would be a good return to form for Kinsella, and that I would enjoy this much as the others in the series. Oh, and you don't need to have read the first 4 books in the series to read this one, as all the characters are well introduced to us, and there is not much mention of any previous storyline, so you ... ...Danny, who first appeared in Shopaholic Abroad.
I just found this book hilarious, and managed to read the whole thing in just 2 days, no mean feat with a mad toddler around the place! It just made me want to keep reading and find out what mad thing Becky was going to do next, and what other "essentials" she could find for her child. And best of all, my favourite part of these books were back, the hilarious letters to Becky from her Financial Advisor, ...

...chick-lit, and deservedly so. Her Shopaholic cycle is extremely popular, and while her other efforts (Undomestic Goddess and Can You Keep a Secret?) had mixed reception, Shopaholic continues to delight.
For the uninitiated, the Shopaholic in question is Becky Bloomwood, a creation of genius that narrates the books and gives them their unique flavour. Unlike other chick-lit heroines, Becky is not riddled with insecurities and neuroses but almost ... ...chick-lit novel - no sex. Shopaholic novels are pure, unadulterated, frothy entertainment with a dose of comedy of manners thrown in, and they do what they do very well indeed. "Shopaholic and Baby" is one of the better ones.
In "Shopaholic and Baby" Becky is pregnant (in fact, it should be really called "Shopaholic and Bump") and explores to the full the glories of baby shopping while conveniently relegating the gory realities of impending childbirth ...

...book is taken from the Shopaholic Series by Sophie Kinsella. I have previously read a couple of the books from the series (not all of them , but I am planning on reading the ones I've missed very soon!) and am really enjoying them!

Like all the other books which I have read in the series , I loved this one! First off all , when I first started reading these books , I thought what a 'silly' character Becky was , but now I've read a few of the books , I've got used to the character , and now absolutely love her! She is so 'wild' , yet stupid that you just have to laugh at her , although I kind of feel sorry for her as well. ...

...I have all the other Shopaholic books but, it has just taken me a while longer to be bale to buy this one! I couldn't wait to get stuck in and I finished it fairly quickly reading it between calls at work. This is my opinion on the latest book in the Shopaholic series.

Advantages: Drew me in straight away, and contains babies! Disadvantages: None!
“Shopoholic and baby”, by Sophie Kinsella is the fifth and as far as I am aware the final offering from the shopoholic series (for the time being anyway!).
The book starts with a quite pregnant Becky who is going for a detailed scan, if you read the last book you will be aware that there was a particular accident that happened with her “long lost” sister Jess, that would make any pregnant woman jumpy!
After ascertaining that everything is fine ... ...funny incident where she has a quick go at scanning herself to find out the sex, then spending the next ten minutes talking to her bladder (soo funny!), she finally allows herself to do a little shopping…..ok, a lot of shopping.
On her trip she over hears two “yummy mummies” talking about the new celebrity midwife Venetia Carter, she has delivered babies from Heidi Klum,s through to bog standard celebrities.
Well of course this means only one thing…..she ...

The cover is lilac all over. At the top of the cover in large white capitals is the name " SophieKinsella". Underneath in a small black font ; " Best selling author of the fabulously popular shopaholic series". In pink font beneath that is " Can you keep a secret?". There is a picture on the front which consists of a cartoon girl with her back to the audience standing in a purple snow globe ,surrounded by silver stars and crossing her fingers behind her back. The cover is a typical "girlie" cover.
