Shrek 2 (PS2)
Well this is a really good game and has come around by Activision who quite often find themselves releasing games about the latest films that have been released at the cinema. I was reluctant to buying this game at first because most of the games that get released that are from the latest kiddie films really aren't that good. I usually find them really boring. But not this one I found it amazing.
The game ... ...very close up shot of Shrek this gives off a very childish look but yet I still wanted to get the game putting all of my trust into it hoping that it wasn't like all of the other games from the cinema.

The game is featured on the movie Shrek 2 which is a film about a big green ogre and a princess Fiona, o yeah don't forget donkey. So the storyline of the game is pretty much the storyline of the film. They have to go to far far away to meet Fiona's parents after getting married. They find themselves going on a very long walk and encounter with some weird and wonderful things. So anyway back onto the review. The game is based around the storyline of the film with a few added extras in the game.
When you first see the game it strikes you with a bright orange cover with a very close up shot of Shrek this gives off a very childish look but yet I still wanted to get the game putting all of my trust into it hoping that it wasn't like all of the other games from the cinema.
So the game is actually quite simple to start up and get going, all of the controls are really simple to use and the screen is nicely laid out so that is also very easy to read and use probably because it has a rating of 3+ but I would say that it is more like an 8+. When you first start the game you have to control 4 players although there are four you only need to control one of them at a time. Each character has different special ability and things that you will need to use if you want to progress through to the next levels in the game. To use the special abilities in the game you just use the triangle button but some of these special abilities can only be used for a limited time or only have limited use. Well here is the character description for each character in the game:
--------- Shrek --------- Shrek is a big green, ugly, smelly ogre. He enjoyed life alone in his swamp until he found the love of his life: Princess Fiona
Fighting Style: various punches and wrestling moves.
Special: Ogre lifting, he can lift, carry, place and throw heavy items
Game tip: If an enemy is dizzy, use Shrek's ogre lifting ability to pick the enemy up and then throw the creature at nearby enemies.
Princess Fiona is not your typical damsel in distress. She's smart, tough and has been know to dropkick a band of outlaws
Fighting Style: Various karate moves
Special: Slow time. Princess Fiona's ability to slow down party members, but it slows down everyone and everything else a lot more. This is a limited special ability, to gain more users pick up an hourglass.
Game tip: Use Princess Fiona's slow time to escape harm when close to death.
----------- Donkey -----------
Donkey's got a mouth that just won't quit as well as the heart of a noble steed.
Fighting style: Donkey power.
Special: Donkey's special is the burro blast kick that can knock creatures down and break specific objects. Most objects that can be affected by donkeys special will have a horseshoe symbol on it.
Game tip: Use Donkeys burro blast on stunned enemies to get rid of them quickly.
------------------- Puss in Boots -------------------
He has steely eyes, swashbuckling finesse and really expensive Corinthian footwear.
Fighting style: Sword Fighting.
Special: Tightrope walking. A move that can be used to cross ropes and chains to gain access to areas that others can't get to.
Game tip: Start combat with his jump attack.
------------------------ Gingerbread Man ------------------------
Gingerbread man is a ninja hero and a friend.
Fighting style: ninja candy cane.
Special: Cookie toss, used to attract enemies. This is a limited special ability. To gain more uses pick up a cookie.
Game tip: throw a cookie to lure enemies into traps.
----------- Lil' Red -----------
Champion softball pitcher with a "can do" attitude.
Fighting Style: Kicks, punches and apple toss.
Special: Rotten apple bomb - when detonated cause an area of attack that damages nearby enemies for 20 points. Lil' Red can either let her rotten apples time run out on its own, or by pressing the triangle button again it detonates immediately. This is a limited special ability; to gain more uses pick up a rotten apple.
Game tip: Lil Red can toss apples from long range or can attack with kicks and punches when in close combat.
------------------ Big Bad Wolf ------------------
Don't let the outfit fool you. He's big, he's bad and he'll blow you away, better watch out grandma.
Fighting style: Claw swipes and Bites.
Special: Huff 'n' Puff. This move can be used on enemies, objects and fire. It blasts enemies away from the wolf and damages them
Game tip: use his huff 'n' puff special to push enemies off ledges.
------- Fairy -------
One tough lady who proves that size doesn't matter.
Fighting style: Fairy magic.
Special: fairy dust. It can be sprinkled on friends and enemies alike when used on friends it gives them the ability to fly for a limited amount of time. If used on an enemy fairy dusts floats them up in the air but leaves them prone to attacks until it wears off.
Game tip: float enemies and then have a team mate hit them in the air.
Well that was the overview of the characters and what they can do. This should help you along the way when you are playing the game. The actual game is set into a story book with the different chapters being the different levels. The first few levels are actually quite easy to complete but as with any game as you get further and further into it you will start to feel the pressure.
The game is a combination of fight off baddies, solve puzzles, find hidden elements and unlock mini-games. You can switch between characters to use individual ones to help you overcome a problem (such as bouncing on buttons to raise platforms whilst one character holds something else open!) Each character has something special that only they can do, so sometimes a bit of lateral thinking is required. Be prepared to "help" younger game players when frustration becomes too much.
Throughout the game there are lots of different things that you can collect to make you team-mates better or stronger etc. these include health bonuses, defence power-up, attack power-up etc.
As well as the game being a single player so that you can play your way through all of the levels you can actually have it as a multiplayer so that all of them can help you along the way to completing the game. You can have a maximum of three players on this game and it makes for great fun if you are not playing alone.
There is a huge advantage to this game over other games. If you die in this game there are various check-points that you will go to instead of starting all over again which can get a bit frustrating if you are new to the game.
The graphics in the game are really good considering the time that it was brought out, but since then technology has advanced so you may think that they are a little on the down side. There are scenes of the film throughout the game and there are also little animated clips throughout the game as well which I thought were quite good.
Also the sound on the game is quite good and I thought that it was quite convincing. The small animation clips are not actually recorded by the same people that play the voices in the film such as "Mike Myers".
I found that they game is really good and has kept me going for a really long time, so long I can't remember. But it is a very playable game and I found it interesting. So I would recommend it to any of those animation lovers out there.
The game can be purchased at most good gaming stores for around £15.00 but can be bought for cheaper on the internet on sites such as www.amazon.co.uk and also www.ebay.co.uk. I have seen them going for around £8.00 on these sites. So in conclusion the game is really good and would make most gamers happy, I would recommend it to anyone because it's an all-round good game.
Thank you for reading and I hope to be hearing from you soon.
Advantages: Good graphics, controls, enough levels. Disadvantages: Definitley hard for young children

1: How did Shrek 2 come about?
Shrek 2, a game on the Playstation 2, was made by renowned publisher Activision and quite new developer Luxoflux as a follow up/adaption to the greatly successful motion picture of the same name. A lot of film to game adaptations are very lacking in the content section, and make a waste of £35. ... ...controls like?
The graphics in Shrek 2 are very good, but only above average for that of a Playstation 2 game. I say this because even though the graphics are smooth, and the colours are bright and easy to see, the graphics are very flawed when it comes to the real-time fighting (There are two types of fighting in games. Real-time and turn-based. Real time is where you just throw the kciks/punches as fast as you can, turn-based is where you attack, ...

Advantages: Easy to get into, good graphics and music. FUN! Disadvantages: Very hard for younger children on harder settings
...The basic premise is that Shrek and Fiona are going to Far Far Away to "meet the parents", and avoid getting rubbed out by the Fairy Godmother. Advantages: Being able to change characters and not being stuck with the same one Disadvantages: The graphics could be a bit better
Shrek 2 is a great game, the only thing that I think could be improved is the graphics. I mean I've played it quite a few times since I've got it. With this game you don't go all the way through with just one character, you get to travel in a team of four and change characters when you want, which I find makes it a bit more fun. The are 9 characters other than Shrek.
For each character there are different controls, which may sound confusing at first, ... ...as an ogress. She and Shrek are living blissfully in their own Ugly Ever After.
Once they receive word, Shrek thinks going home is a "really bad idea" and isn't too happy about facing the parents - and castle guards - who locked his wife in a dragon's tower. But Princess Fiona (along with donkey) convince Shrek it will be a good time, and together they depart for the far-out land of Far Away.

In the game you are a character from the movie but there are three other with you. In the game you can swich Players by pressing the sholder buttons. You go round and kill bad guys and evil people like the fairygod mother and robin hood and his merry men.
This game is a great game for kids aged 9 to 14. The game play is one of the best i've ever seen in a game based on a movie. The main problem is the Camera. Its never in the right place at the ... ...it swerves of to the one player instead of zooming out and getting the whole screen in. the Remarks that the characters make are quite funny and laughable, and the story line is very funny!
