Advantages: very good sound across the range Disadvantages: A bit tinny with guitar recordings
This is a lovely little mic ideal for home recording. I'm not gonna bore you with the spec, but rather how does the recording quality sounds. Well while its obviously not up there with condensor mic's its a good solid choice for people who are recording voice and guitars on a home recording system.
only problem I have encountered is the guitar sounds a bit tinny when I use this mic. I know I can tweek this through the mixing desk, but I own a beautiful Yamaha acoustic and I want its full resonance to be captured without comprimising the sound through digital mixing. Essentially this is not a major problem with the SHURE SM58 but I guess highlights the reason behind paying that bit more for a SHURE rather than going for a cheaper alternative.
Another note is I've suffered hardley any feedback with this mic, which is good news when ...
Advantages: Robust Disadvantages: Does not give the user ability to sing
I have been using the same SM58 for nearly 10 years (and even then it wasn't brand new) in that time it has been subjected to all manner of phlegm, drunken (and un-requested) guest vocalists, alcohol spills and cigarette smoke and it still works beautifully. Admittedly it now has a slightly duller sound than the SM58 recently purchased by the guitarist in the band. but until the day it is broken beyond repair or lost I will remain faithfull to it - and would rush straight out to buy a new one. Value for money, quality, reliability the Shure SM58 has all of these qualities in spades. A must have for any serious musician ...

Sound Isolating Earphones
~~Background~~
I have been meaning to buy some 'in ear' earphones for some time for use with my iPod, especially for use when going on walks or bike rides. I have headphones which are fine for home use, but find when outside, external noise spoils my enjoyment.
So I had a budget (less than £100) and I knew that I wanted in ear phones, and I did not want 'bass driven' earphones, as so many are.
I should explain before I go any further what I mean by 'in ear' earphones, as all earphones are in ear in one way or another.
The standard iPod earphones 'sit' just inside the ear; are one fit, and often get loose, or fit unevenly (as we all have slightly different ear sizes), they do not reduce or cancel out external noise.
This applies to most standard earphones. 'In ear' earphones sit ...
