This mic is probably the number one microphone that would be recommended to you if you asked someone who knows that theyre talking about which should be your first mic to purchase........why? because this microphone is capable of capturing a great representation of a whole range of instruments from a snare drum on a kit to a vocalist on stage!
Ok so the more technical info........
The frequency response of this microphone is really very steady which makes it perfect for a whole range of instruments and roughly covers everything from 40Hz to 15KHZ so as mentioned a very broad range seeing human hearing is around 20Hz to 20KHZ!
The SM57 is whats called a 'cardioid' microphone which basically means that wherever its pointed it focus on that specific point and will ignore most of the other noise to the sides and behind of it. Going back to what i said earlier this is perfect from a drum kit in a studio for example as you want to be able to mix each piece individually and is great on stage as it stops the pain of feedback when positioned correctly!
The microphone has a standard 3 pin XLR output which is the most common on most microphones today as well as most other audio equipment! so is instantly suitable! As it is a dynamic microphone the mic requires no external power supply unlike a condensor microphone for example which would need phantom 48v power supply but thats a whoooole other story without getting too technically overboard!
The microphone itself is made from painted die cast steel so is probably one of the most resistant microphones about as well! these can be dropped a number of times and still work as well (not that i would recommend it!)
Overall i would recommend them to anyone who doesnt already have one, whether you work in a top notch studio or want to just sit in your room recording demos.....this microphone will be your friend and will quickly give you professional quality, and for the price you can get them for now its a steal!
After getting sick of my musical recordings being subjected to annoying high-end hiss or low-end hums, I decided I needed a new microphone to record my acoustic instruments.
The SM57 drew attention to me straight away.
Aside from being one of, if not, the most popular instrument microphones around these days (as well as world wide use in pro. recording studios), it's also extremely affordable. It seemed too good to be true.
I bought one straight ... ...is between 40 and 15,000Hz. Basically, it keeps the frequencies you would want in the first place. No incommodious high end hiss or irritating low end hums that drown out the rest of the sound. This superior range also makes it perfect for recording a wide variety of instruments.
Saxophone, clarinets, most tenor and alto instruments at that. It deals fantasticly with percussion as well - Congas, bongos, snare drums.
It really shines, though, when ...

Advantages: Great for instruments or vocal, pretty rugged, not too expensive Disadvantages: it's one hell of an ugly microphone
...bongo's congas etc. Shure also reccomend it for woodwinds however I have no experience of this.
And here's another interesting fact from shure: It has been the standard microphone used on the podium for the president for the past 30 years.
And on that note I should end, if it's good enough for Mr. President, It's good enough for your little home recording, your studio or your gig rig.
Prices range from around 30-40 on ebay. And 60-80 in shops. ...

Advantages: Great value, all rounder, well-built Disadvantages: No rolloff switch, top-mid boost not for everyone
a hardcase and more importantly a crisp, and sturdily built condenser mic worthy of most recording jobs. A condenser needs a preamp to work, so you need a mixer with phantom power or a separate standalone preamp (which is what the pros do). Either way, the Rode NT1 is an solid mic for recording and give you good, if not stellar results.
Character-wise, the mic has a slight top-mid boost that is suited to most vocals, but is not to everyone's taste. Condensers usually provide more detailed and sophisticated sound compared to dynamic mics(like ShureSM57), but I'll stop before I make too many gross generalisations about mics!
If you're on a budget, the Rode NT1 is a great choice simply because it allows you to record with a "proper" mic for less than £200. Nowadays you can get one used for about £100, and it would be a worthy investment if ...

for very high power p.a.’s ?!?!?!?!?
The Behringer comes in a sturdy plastic carry case with shaped foam inserts to make sure your mic is safely tucked up between gigs, and it also comes with a mic stand clip. The clip is pretty good as well as there is a removable brass (I think) adapter so that your mike clip will fit most mike stands.
The Shure’s came in a black vinyl pouch with no other protection. This could have been the shop’s fault as they must have arrived at their premises in something sturdier – I’m not sure on this point as someone else bought the Shure’s.
Sound wise, both microphones have plenty of depth but the Behringer sounds brighter, with more sparkle than the Shure. Any Shure I’ve used be it SM57 or SM58 produced a flat, slightly dull sound. The Behringer achieves a brighter ...
