The phone
The Siemens A50 is a basic model. It is a slim, deep blue phone with a fairly large screen and easy to see and use buttons. No fancy gizmo's or gadgets grace the A50's layout and no clamshell style opening for me to fumble with. The phone was retailing at around £40 on a Pay As You Go tariff when I purchased mine from Carphone Warehouse.
I chose this phone some four years ago as a replacement for an all singing, all dancing model made by a rival manufacturer. The reason for selecting a basic phone was very simple (rather like me!), I got fed up with the fiddly number pad and complicated menu on my other phone and decided that as I had no interest in playing games, listening to music, surfing the net, receiving and sending email or taking photographs with my phone, it was pointless to have all these features! A bog standard phone call and text menu and a neat, yet functional phone was all I felt I needed and indeed, with the Siemens A50, this is exactly what I got!
Use and reliability
As I have already stated, I am not interested in all the fancy technological things mobile phones are capable of nowadays. My mobile is not a vital part of my life, it is a means of communication, no more, no less. I live a somewhat nomadic existence, travelling by narrowboat at certain times of the year. I also retreat to a holiday home in the North East of England at other times, so a mobile phone is a useful means of keeping in touch with family and friends when I am away from home. I have had no problems at all with my A50, it has never let me down and is simplicity itself to operate. The phonebook facility is capable of storing all the numbers I need and is sturdy and durable enough to withstand the constant travelling, it has been dropped, knocked and generally ill treated, yet still looks as good as it did when new!
The phone came with a mains charger and a hands free kit, the charger is still in use but I never actually used the hands free kit, as I am very much against using mobiles in the car, so never bothered with it.
On start up the phone has an amusing cartoon of a cat and goldfish, I understand other options can be downloaded, but personally I cannot see the necessity! The phone is capable of accessing the net and has various interactive facilities, there are a couple of games built in, 'Snack Attack' and 'Balloon Shooter' but as I have not used any of these features, I cannot confirm whether they are any good! The selection of pre-programmed ring tones is adequate for my needs although perhaps a younger user would find them too limited.
The phone is used daily and still has the original battery in place. The battery is not holding it's charge for quite as long as it used to, but this really is not a problem to me. Considering the phone and battery are over four years old, I do not consider this to be an unreasonable situation. The talk and standby time on the phone are acceptable, I tend to make one or two shortish calls per day and only charge the phone twice a week on average. The reception quality of the Siemens A50 is very good, certainly comparable to other mobiles that I have used. The one draw back with the phone that I feel I must mention is that the loudest setting of ring tone volume is not quite loud enough to hear over my narrowboat engine, however I am sure that this is not an uncommon problem with any model of mobile, as narrowboats can be noisy!
Conclusion
As a basic mobile phone, the Siemens A50 takes an awful lot of beating. Text messages, making and receiving calls are simplicity itself, making the mobile ideal for my meagre needs! I do not think this phone would suit someone who wants more than just a took to make and receive calls and texts, but if, like me, you see your mobile phone as a necessary evil, you would need to go a long way to find a better more durable product. Given that I have owned the phone for such a long time, I really feel that I have had my moneys worth from the product! This phone is unlikely to be available from the main mobile phone stockists given it's age and the demise of the manufacturer! It is available second-hand from e Bay and similar sites. The Siemens company was made a part of the Benq group and in February 2007 the company went into liquidation.
Advantages: The features (except for WAP), the phone/phonebook customisation, EMS, predictive SMS, large memory capacity and vibrate alert! Disadvantages: No FREE ringtones/logos from Siemens, simple games, WAP, the thin phone cover and the lack of a phone cover, as standard! No ringtone editor.
...the moment (direct from the Siemens website) and hopefully the rest of the "Mobile Accessories" industry will catch on, if the phone becomes popular. The back of the case slides off easily, if you apply a bit of pressure in the right place (which may be a bad point) and so you may want to get a cover for the phone. The Siemens C45 phone cover will be adequate, as these phones are of a similar size and shape.
The phone itself fits snugly into the ... ...C45 tone and NOT another Siemens model tone, as this can makes the phone go weird. I did this accidentally and it kept switching itself off!! Don't try that at home kids....
The only ringtones I could find first of all, were on the Siemens website, but you have to pay for those and I couldn't be bothered. Then I found a useful WAP website called Club Siemens (http://wap.club-siemens.com), which has free Siemens ringtones and logos. Even though it ...

Advantages: It is just a phone Disadvantages: It is just a phone
...had already decided upon the Siemens A50 cause it was the cheapest, and it wasn't a Samsung (I just thing that Siemens is a much better name, I am putting my Siemens next to my ear ho ho ho). Anyway the shop assistant tried to up sell me to one with a colour screen "how does that improve the phones abilities I asked", how about one with a digital camera he responded, no I just want a phone that makes and takes phone calls matey boy, I want that siemens ... ...and still works. So if this is what you are looking for then why not stick a lump of plastic Siemens in your pocket.
Before I sign off the battery life is ok with 80 hours standby and I'm not sure about talk time but it does the job. ...

Advantages: Easy to use Disadvantages: short battery life / sticky keys
...latest gadgets I bought a Siemens A50 for £59.99. This included the phone, user book, battery charger and £1.00 starter credit.
I found the user book very helpful and informative, it is written in plain English and has illustrations to help you understand better.
The phone its self is quite attractive in dark blue and white with an easy to read screen, the screen is quite large enough to read easily, not a colour one but I don’t need a colour one ... ...All in all the Siemens A50 mobile phone is good if like me you need a phone that is a phone, it does have a few glitches but nothing too serious. I would recommend this phone as being very reliable, easy to use and of a reasonable price. I am quite satisfied with mine and find it very useful.
Thanks for reading.

Advantages: Stays charged for 5 days Disadvantages: only basic features
I bought a phone a Siemens A50 phone just before Christmas 2003. I did so as I had no home phone and I so wanted a mobile, but one without a monthly rip off charge. Previously I had been charged mad money on my Barclaycard for a phone I had never used much £15 a month for two phone calls! This Siemens A50 was the cheapest in Woolworths at the time it was £60 so I decided on it. It comes in a nice little box with a charger a small one which was a ... ...Also full instructions are included. You have to phone up the head office to have the phone switched on and then it is away you go. I also went for the call overseas option. When over seas you can ask to have the phone connected to a local service.
The battery life I have found is far better than any of my previous phones. The last one was a 1997 vintage Nokia which I junked in 2000 when my Barclaycard was cancelled. I no longer then have to do ...

Advantages: Small, stylish, large memory, long battery life, text writing is easy, wap Disadvantages: Small buttons, ring tones are irritating, low ringer volume, freezes when accessing inbox/outbox
I bought the Siemens A50 from the Carphone Warehouse last December. It only cost me £39.99 at the time as I got a £20 trade-in on my old Motorola phone.
Looks: I was instantly drawn to the A50's attractive design. Although not the smallest available, it is a compact, slimline phone and a baby compared to my old one! It is stylish and it isn't very heavy.

Advantages: It Flashes Disadvantages: Dam Polyphonic Ring Tones
My old trusty SiemensA50 is a great phone, but he was looking a bit tried and shoddy, and then some wonderful people offered me this baby for free, this makes me happy. Ok I am now signed up to a contract but it will work out cheaper as I was chucking in 30 quid worth of top ups a month, such is my popularity these days.
Anyways onto the phone and like all phones it takes and makes phone calls. The speaker quality is good and since I never need to call myself I cannot evaluate the microphone. I believe in talking to myself in the good old fashioned way. The Address book works and you can group numbers and stuff into groups if you so desire.
It takes text and multimedia messages (whatever they are), and one thing I don't like is that I have to download ringbones from the Internet, using the WAP facility this is potentially ...

Advantages: Screen, Buttons and Loudness of the Phone Disadvantages: Battery Time
Well, its Not a Camera phone ( Well, a Camera add-on can be brought off e-bay or via siemens, and this is added via the bottom)
The phone is excellent. Highly recommened. It may seem quite complex at 1st, but after a few button presses and a few ringtone changes, you are done. Its not that complex. The screen is really nice, and the buttons are too. Shame they are abit too close together.
The phone is really loud compared to its counterparts aka: SiemensA50. The only thing that lets it down is the battery time. The power goes quite quickly. Other then that its excellent. Nice range of polyphonic ringtones, and some nice little animations when you 1st get it
Its tri-band for use all over the world (shame mine is networked locked to o2!). Its a briliant little phone, but if you want the camera INSIDE the phone, rather then just ...

Advantages: Great price, easy to use, nice design, improved siemens keyboard Disadvantages: can't play mp3, low quality pic preview... but hey, not huge memory
I got my MC60 from the internet, bought it for 59.99 with a T-mobile sim. The reason why I bought this phone was because I needed to change my old mobile (siemensA50) but didn't have a lot of money to spend. This seemed a great value and the most important thing: it was tri band. Some people don't know about the band but in the States and South America mobies work in a different frequency, and I needed a phone I could use anywhere.
I didn't have great expectations but when the phone arrived I saw it looked better than I expected.
I thought it twice before buying, I hated the A50 keyboard so I thought I would never buy a siemens again... but thanks god they realized how inconvenient it was so they changed it! In my previous mobile (A50) the button to end up a comunication was the same one to erase the characters in SMS: therefore ...

You can store up to 50 additional numbers in your phone - plenty of space. Anyhow, the A50 is designed for getting the message across, with minimum fuss. Equipped with a WAP 1.2.1 browser the A50 lets you access the online world. So surf the mobile Internet or add some personal touches with ringtones, screensavers and bitmaps to download.
Brilliant phone customisation, Good size screen with 65K colours (STN screen technology aside), Navigation system, Downloadable Games/Apps, Range of connectivity options
Casing attracts fingerprints and smudges, Hard to view in sunny outdoor conditions, 2MB memory maybe too little, Back and Cancel buttons maybe confusing, Quick Access to WAP services can be costly if accidently pressed. (*)
