~~~Aesthetics~~~ Lets forget about the unimportant packaging and go straight on to the little red phone inside the box. When I first saw it in O2, I must admit it was the price my eyes were drawn too but on closer inspection the phone seemed pretty small and smooth i.e. no abrasive edges so comfortable to put into your pocket or slide into your tiny handbag for a night out. The exact measurements are 103 x 46 x 21.5 mm which is about 4 x 2" .
The phone comes in two colours red and blue with stoney grey sides. You can get exchangeable covers but I havent been able to find any since I bought the phone! All there seems to be are Nokia covers on the market... this can be a bit annoying but the bright red of my phone looks good so Im happy to keep it.
As for the buttons, they are fairly small but I think would be okay for everyone and like most mobiles are silver in colour. The screen is a decent size considering the size of the phone - probably about 1 x 1.5". It is quite an odd orange colour and always present on the screen is battery life, signal, service provider (e.g. O2), date and time. There is also a feature where you can set a link up on the main screen which takes you directly to your favourite/most essential menu! (Very handy for writing texts quickly!)
The final thing to say about the look of the phone is that there is no visible aerial which I think is an advantage not only from an aesthetic point of view but also when carrying the phone in your pocket.
~~~ Features ~~~
The MENU
Messages One of the best things about writing a message on this phone is the number of characters available to you. On my previous Nokia phones I've only had 160 so I was surprised to find 760 on this phone. Thats a big increase and really useful because you dont have to try and cut your long messages down to a few words. Pre-defined texts (i.e. short messages already stored on the phone like - Please call back) are also available although I have to say I've never really used these. I find it quicker to type my own message.
Call records You can find all the standard features in this menu e.g.missed calls, calls received, calls dialled, erase records and duration/charges.
Alarm Clock The good thing about the alarm on this phone is you can set it to be a ring tone and wake up to something decent in the morning rather than that constant bleep that we all hate!!
Surf and Fun There are 7 sub menus here : 1. Internet - there is WAP available on the phone, it can be a bit temperemental at times but on the whole pretty good. I was surprised to find such a cheap phone even had internet access!! 2. Games - there are 4 games on the phone -- Stack Attack : kind of a strange version of tetris involving a little man moving falling bricks in order to make a row -- Balloon Shooter : quite an easy one, basically pop the balloons that appear on screen! -- Move the box : 14 levels so hours of fun! Involves pusing boxes over designated squares. Difficult to explain but quite fun! (Cant complete level 6 so thats one to watch out for!) -- Wacko : Try to hit the creatures that pop up but avoiding the floppy eared ones at the same time! (Bit of a dodgy game!) 3. Own animations : these are little animated pictures that you can set as your screensaver. There are 8 different ones including a heart, smiley face etc 4. Own pictures : There are lots of static pictures here which can be used as a screensaver or logo for your phone. Pics include cartoon faces showing different emotions and then also things like flowers, a teddybear etc 5. Own sounds : Available in the tones menu so not really worked out this feature yet! 6. Calculator : this ones self-explanatory really! 7. Curreny Converter : I've always thought this was a useful feature but not really sure how to set it up even after looking at the instruction manual!
Ring Tones Polyphonic ringtones are on the phone so you can download some good ones from the internet. Nevertheless there are a good selection to choose from!! You can also assign different ringtones to different people so you know whos calling you without looking! There are also loads of different message tones which are polyphonic. You also have the option to assign a ringtone for a message although I think this could get a bit confusing!
Profiles A menu that I have never been able to figure out. I think its to do with how loud your phone rings in different environments but have a look at the manual to see if you can make any sense of it!
Setup 1. Language : You can put your phone in 12 different languages although not too sure how useful this feature is if you can only speak english 2.Logo : basically allows you to configure the font size,contrast and whether you have a logo or not 3. Screensaver : similar to logo but you can password protect it which is pretty good so no-one has acces to your phone 4.Call setup - enables you to hide your caller ID which is a feature I haven't seen before and I think is really useful 5.Divert - you can set the phone up to divert calls directly to your answer machine. 6.Clock - basically just setting the time and date and feature where you can hide or show clock 7.Security - allows you to set a pin for the phone and also block certain numbers from calling you. 8.Network - if you lose your network, the phone tries to actively search for it 9.Master Reset - Resets everything back to manufacturers settings so I would advise to stay away from this function!
Phonebook You can store up to 50 names and numbers in the phone. A good feature for me is the <own number> option, where there is a special section just for the number of the phone because I find so many people ask for my number and I can never remember it! One final feature is the group setting where by you can organise your contacts into different groups e.g. family, friends
~~~ Other Useful Information ~~~ -- Hands free option -- Dual band -- Talk time = 300mins -- charging time is about 1.5hours for a full battery depending on how low you let it run -- to lock the phone you hold the hash key which unlocks itself very easily in your pocket.
In general, its a good, reliable and cheap little phone which has lots of features to offer with very few disadvantages!
Advantages: Small, Lightweight, easy to use Disadvantages: No Ringtone editor
...Nokia, so I chose the Siemens A55 and boy it was worth it.
To start the A55 looks similar to the A50 with the exception of a new type of connector in the 55 series, it supports 16 polyphonic ringtones and has a handsfree speaker system built in to the phone.
The A55 is really simple to use all the phones navigation is done via three buttons just below the screen, the middle one for up, down and the phone book and the outer buttons for selecting ... ...not to big and not to small (45mm x 100mm) and weighs a mere 84g.
The screen on the A55 has a good resolution of 101 x 64 pixels and hold 4 lines of text with up to 16 characters per line, and an orange or blue back-light depending on the phone colour.
The sound quality is very good and the speaker on the A55 is quite loud on full volume, but when you have the built in handsfree speaker phone turned on it does get a bit crackly, but it is extremely ...
The Siemen’s A55...
I first got this phone on a contract through Orange. I was a little gutted really because I wanted the Nokia 3510 but they wouldn’t allow me to have it for some reason. However, when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised to say the least! It is a small, light phone – like most mobiles nowadays. It is simple and very easy to navigate your way around the menus. I found it extremly simple being an avid Nokia lover – so I’m sure ... ...it too.
This model has changeable face and back panels called "ClipIt", you can easily change your phones look by using them. Sometimes the phone squeaks when you are holding it due to the panels, but it could be because I am a little heave handed.
I did manage to drop mine – at a drunken party – and the cover went everywhere…it protected my phone though and didn’t scratch anything.
They keyboard is convenient by the arrangement and also by the ...
...end I settled on the Siemens A55.
It's quite an old phone, which explains how I got it for £30 in Dixons. You can pick it up for about £20 these days, but to be honest there aren't many left. However, it does everything one would want it to. A quick list of features should give you a good idea:
~Sends/receives text messages, has T9 dictionary, preset messages and so on.
~Records received/missed/dialled calls
~Alarm Clock
~Surf & fun - this includes ... ...a bit baffled that the Siemens uses the '1' button for a space rather than the '0' button, but you soon get used to it. There is also the option of buying different coloured fascias, for those who get a high doing that sort of thing.
My personal mobile is with O2, but with the T Mobile Siemens I've actually got better recpetion 98% of the time. Battery life is good for the most part, with me usually only needing to charge it every week. However, ...
...local orange shop. The Siemens A55 was on offer there for £39.99 - a bargain I am sure you will agree but thats not all. There are currently doing a deal where they give you £10.00 free air time credit and they give this to existing Orange customers to thank you for staying loyal to them and also to new orange customers to thank you for joining with them. This then in theory put the price the phone down to £29.99 as I would have needed to get credit ... ...I simply inserted my SIM and I was ready to go. The phone is really easy to use and is incredibly light weight. It measures aout 3 inches by 1 inch and is lighter than my old nokia and i didn't think they got much lighter than that. It has all the usual features that you would expect, Text Messaging, Conferece Calls, WAP, Games, Alarm Clock, Games, Currency Convertor, Hundreds of Ring tones and text tones, Predictive text, Text delivery reports, ...
Advantages: Easy to use Disadvantages: Buttons are a bit fiddly
I actually got this phone free through an offer with Avon, but normally it costs £39.99 on Orange (which is the network that I got it from) and is the same on most networks (though I think that it might be cheaper on T mobile) (as of may 2004). I was in desperate need of a phone as my last one had broken, and, not being very technically minded, was relieved to find out how easy this phone was to use. The menus are fairly self explanatory.
Now for ... ...and silver (because it is on Orange, but generally the phone is blue). I haven't yet been able to find changeable covers in the shops, but there is quite a wide selection on ebay. The screen isn't in colour. The phone is about 13cm long, 6cm wide and 2cm deep. It is quite lightweight and the screen is a reasonable size compared to the phone, about 4cm by 2cm. The battery charged quite quickly (about an hour and a half), and, three days later, I haven't ...
Advantages: durable, easy to use and hard waring. Disadvantages: poor signal, easily unlocked like A55 and not much on it.
I have this phone and I have had it for abot three years. I think it is good because of its small shape and size but there are also many naegatives about this phone. It does not have that much on it and is rather boring also I find the memory runs out quickly and also the battery. I found it really diffucult to get a signal and also foud that I recieved messages up to an hour late which is similar to the siemensa55. The phone easily unlocks and does not do muck except phone and send mesages.
I would advise this phone to someone who wants it for emergencies and also is lokking for somthing that is simple and easy to use. Also people who want a phone which is relatively cheap and durable. ...
Advantages: small Disadvantages: clumsy, slow, very low battery life
Bought this phone last week for US$75.00. Not a great phone at all compared to my trusty SiemensA55!
Loved the A55, lasted me three years. Have had the AF51 for a week and: it keeps shutting down for no reason, battery lasts about 28 hours (thats on standby with no talking, just ten sms's).
The buttons for sms's dont allow for fast movement of fingers, and getting through the various screens to send a sms takes much longer than the A55. This can be a bit frustrating until you learn to slow down a bit. but if you send lots of sms's, you dont want this phone, just too slow and clumsy.
The antenna is also very weak compared to the A55. I have to go wandering to get signal in my office and other buildings wheras I didnt use to with my A55. The antenna is just not strong enough to get reception in buildings.
Apart from this, its ...
Advantages: compact and stylish Disadvantages: frustrating texting
I used to have a SiemensA55 (free with avon orders) which worked fine and was easy to use. I tried hard not to let my phone embarrass me, but after endless ribbing at work, I decided to go for something a bit more modern. I was on a limited budget and wanted a phone on the t mobile network so I could keep my Fresh sim card, and also wanted as many up to date features as I could afford. I came across the Motorola V220, which was £35 on the Play.com website. They only had a black one, which was fine as I'm not that fussy. It arrived the very next day and I can honestly say that I have never looked back! I had been warned about Motorola phones and had also read reviews so I was a bit sceptical, but it has lived up to nearly all my expectations. It is quite bulky and robust, so you can easily find it in your pocket or handbag, which is ...
Petite, light and easy to use, the A55 weighs a mere 84 grams. With hands free speakerphone and central scrolling key for ease of navigation, this great value fashion phone allows the user the complete freedom to communicate. The A55 offers polyphonic ring tones, as well as images, sounds and animations for EMS (Enhanced Message Service) communication. There is also a Calling Faces feature, which lets users identify callers at a glance by attributing pictures to each phone book entry.
