I recently brought the Siemens C35i as I was looking for a new and better phone. I already had a Motorola M3888 on Virgin Mobile so I just brought the C35i for £79.99 and put my existing sim card in it.
I was very impressed with the size and feel of the phone and got to grips with the menus from the moment I switched it on. It takes a short while to find the network but once it has it’s no problem and even with a weak signal as it is in my area the call clarity is good unlike other phones I have used.
Battery life is good but some phones are better. One feature I am impressed with is the ability to condition the battery by running it down and charging it back up again, keeping the battery at it’s
best. The only thing is that this feature is a long way into the menu structure.
The phone does have Wap capabilities. The Wap browser is ok but Wap in general isn’t that great so it isn’t really anything to get too excited about. It’s easy to get into and navigate although the screen is only three lines so quite a bit of scrolling is involved.
The games are quite good and keep you entertained at times when you’ve got nothing else to do. The games include: Wayout (Maze game); Quattropoli (Connect 4); Reversi (something I can’t work out) and Microsoft’s Minesweeper. Control is easy and the games can be made as challenging as you wish. I however have problems beating the phone at connect four on the beginner level (I’d like to know how others got on as everyone I asked to try failed). The games are great for journeys although it’s not a Nokia and is lacking snake.
Other features include a currency converter and chronometer. These features are all very useful with Alarm Clock, Stopwatch and Count Down Timer under chronometer and an easy to use currency converter useful when abroad. There is also a calculator, which isn’t great but still a nice feature.
‘Appointments’ is another good feature of this phone. As well as having Daily entries you can set it up so it alerts you at a set time and date every week, month or year. You can also set it to meeting, call, birthday or alarm. The good thing about it is that even if your phone is off it will still alert you – a very good alarm clock therefore although not much use as I just go back to sleep again.
Profiles allow you to change the melody, volume, vibrate and call screening settings depending on where you are. For example: Home; Work, Normal; Meeting; Noisy Environment. There are some preset but all can be changed and more can be added.
Text Messages are easy too with T9 Predictive text input. You only have to press each key once and it will guess what you want to say. If it says the wrong thing you can select the right one from a list or type it in manually if it isn’t there. This only happens with things like surnames and places or if you abbreviate. It does make you write the full word and spell correctly so some people will be pleased to know it can be switched off although I find it helpful not a problem. Sending a message is easy and you can choose to type in the number or get it from the phonebook. The good thing is that once you have sent the message it returns you to it so you have the option to send it again as many times as you like or save it for future reference.
The phonebook is well organized (alphabetically) and can be easily accessed using the dedicated phonebook key. You can choose icons for different phone numbers as well as making numbers VIP numbers. This allows you to have different ring tones or volumes for VIP and normal calls or even block other calls altogether (or turn the ringer off). This is useful as you might still want those important to you to get through but not be disturbed by anyone else.
I could go on and on about this phone but there is one last feature I must mention. That is the auto key lock, pretty boring really, locking the keypad automatically after one minute of inactivity. This is great though as it stops you accidentally dialing, costing you money and annoying for the person on the receiving end. With this you don’t have to remember to put key lock on.
To sum it up it’s a great all round phone packed with features (not just W@P), lightweight and well designed. I would recommend this phone to everyone although it is a little more expensive than some of the phones on pay as you go. It is worth it though and the price is falling although it varies across networks.
For accessories I recommend http://www.thefonezone.co.uk (Bargain Pack: Case, In-Car Charger, Hands Free, Car Holder and Charger Pouch for £9.99 – you can pay £14.99 just for a case and sometimes more on the high street).
To buy this phone from Virgin Mobile (they will unlock phones for free but it takes about a month) with a years free insurance if you buy online along with a connection pack visit: http://www.virginmobile.com.
