Firstly I have to admit that I don't actually own this handset anymore, I sold it in favour of my shiny new Sony Ericsson T68i, however, because of the fact that I owned this phone for the best part of two years, I think that im in a pretty good position to write a review on it.
When I purchased the M35i back in 2001 it was one of the top phones on the market. It was small, relatively lightweight, and had a wide array of features. I bought the phone on pay as you go from Virgin Mobile as my previous mobile had recently packed in although I needed to update it so to be honest I wasnt particularly bothered.
As I purchased this handset online, I got a really great deal. The handset price was £99.99, however, as I purchased online I was given £25
free credit as well as a free handset insurance package which proved to be especially useful for me! I could also choose the exact date that I wanted my phone to be delivered on, which was extremely useful to me - I chose a Saturday as I'm always out and about during the week.
Anyway before I go any further, here's the useful stats on the m35i:
Talk time 5 hours Standby time 180 hours Recharge time 2 hours, 20 mins Weight 125g Size (H x W x D) 117 x 47 x 22 Antenna Internal Phone book memory 99
These stats may look pretty outdated now, however when the handset was released a couple of years back it was a very desirable handset.
Functionality:
The Siemens m35i is an extremely user friendly handset. The phone's interface is quick and easy to navigate, and changing settings is not a complicated process. Making and receiving calls with this handset is also an extremely simple process - you simply find the person you want to call and press the green (telephone)key. One thing which particularly impressed me about the m35i at the time was the sound quality of the phonecalls - Calls were rarely cut out due to signal loss, and during the majority of calls I found it easy to understand what the other person was saying.
Apart from just functionality, the Siemens m35i is also an extremely sensible and practical handset. Despite the fact that the handset is never going to stand out or impress anyone nowadays, there are a number of areas in which the phone really comes into its own. Firstly, the fact that the phone is water resistant is an excellent feature - I never had to worry about making a call outside when it was raining, and I could even take the handset into the shower with me if I was expecting a call.
As well as being water resistant, the m35i is also shock resistant. Ive lost count of the amount of times I dropped the handset and for a long time it continued to work fine, however I did have a few problems towards the end of its life. Furthermore, the lack of an external aerial signifies that the m35i is built to last, it is almost indesructable infact.
To be honest I actually did think that the m35i was indestructible. Unfortunately this wasnt the case, and I had to contact Virgin Mobile for a replacement handset after it eventually broke, although to be fair I must have dropped the handset in the region of 50 or 60 times! Thankfully though, the phone was insured, and getting a replacement was a quick and simple process - Within a week of contacting Virgin regarding the problem, a courier had delivered my replacement handset direct to my door, and best of all, free of charge! I have to say though, it was my fault that the handset eventually broke, and I cannot apportion the blame in any part to the manufacturer, in fact I feel that I must commend them for designing and producing such a practical and functional handset.
The phone interface is pretty basic in todays terms. It does posses a WAP facility although personally I never used this as I couldnt really see the point! There are a number of pre-recorded ringtones on the phone which are supposedly composed by to dj's, however I cannot see how this is the case as they are absolutely terrible! The phone's memory can store 10 text messages, unfortunately though, the handset lacks a predictive text facility although I cant remember whether or not this had been invented at the time.
The Siemens m35i was a great handset in it's time and I had loads of fun playing around with it (shows how sad I really am). However, with todays "third generation" handset's leading the way, I can't really recommend the handset as a sound investment. The m35i is practical, functional, user-friendly, and almost indestructable, and thus will probably go down in history as one of the best designed handsets around.
I do have to say though that I am now in love with my Sony EricssonT68i and I wouldnt lose it for the world!

When I worked in the phone shop, we sold loads of these to builders and contractors and they very rarely came back broken - they were a proper little workhorse of a phone!Lisa
