I've just bought this phone on Tesco Mobile Pay as You Go for £99.99 (well actually it's £124.99 but you get £25 off if you buy £25 or more in other shopping) and I've seen it advertised in Dixons and on T-mobile PAYG for the same price, you can get it for free if you get a phone on contract. One of the things that attracted me to this phone was the design, instead of the normal keyboard layout, it's set out in an X shape, it fit nicely in my hand and seemed sturdy enough and had a good range of functions for the price. Just as a by the by I'll say that so far Tesco hasn't impressed me with their service on this, I picked up the box and paid for it with the rest of my shopping then went to customer service to collect the phone, only to find after half an hour or more of waiting and them searching that the phones weren't going to be in store until the end of the week. Now, why they had a box there for you to pick up and a phone on display is a very good question, it seems that they put these things out on the launch date regardless of whether they've actually got any in stock or not. Anyway, I decided that I didn't want a refund and gave them my details to contact me when the phone was in. Full marks on that point, unfortunately although they told me they were going to put one aside for me at customer services, when I got there it was another 30-45 min wait while they searched and searched and finally got someone to get it from the warehouse.

****THE LOOKS****

Unfortunately when I finally get my new phone home never have I come across a phone that looks so shoddy and ill-made, it certainly looks and feels alright on the sellers' displays but when you get it home and open the box you find that you've got to assemble it yourself. The phone comes in 4 parts the outer plastic case that feels like it's come out of a cheap christmas cracker, the phone innards, a keyboard and a separate battery. The keyboard is a small square, with plastic keys on a plastic back stuck onto a rubberised pad, when you pick it up it flops around and looks cheap and nasty. The keyboard just rest on the front of the phone with nothing to hold it in place until you put the front cover on, no guidelines or clips to hold it in place. OOPs thought I broke it, no it's alright the outer case is meant to fall into two pieces, it's the only way to get the phone in. 10 minutes later I finally get an acceptable fit on the front cover, the tricks to hold the bottom end down tight and then push on the top until it engages, the back goes on quite easily in comparison. Well OK it doesn't look so bad now that it's together but I'm still not happy with the fit of the front cover, it seems loose at the bottom and there's a distinct crack between the joins - not surprising really as there's nothing to hold it together there, no clips or anything, just pressure. At this point I realised that I'd taken the plastic cover off the case but not the display screen, well the phones a little harder to take apart than you might expect, it takes quite a hefty shove to get the back moving. Sure enough there's a piece of plastic with two tabs over the screen, but is it a cover or is it the screen itself ? It seems to be stuck on too tightly to come off, so I debated over this for another 10 minutes pushing a nail under the edges to see if it would shift, finally I decided to take the bull by the horns and started tugging in earnest, it had been glued to the metal surrounds of the screen but did eventually come off thankfully not damaging the screen in the process which was something I was worried about. Again putting it all back together it just doesn't seem to fit well and I'm concerned that at the first fall it's going to come to pieces - whenever it's in my hand I can't resist giving it an extra squeeze just to push the cover together a little.

****THE FUNCTIONS****

- Polyphonic Ring Tones - I've been a bit sceptical of polyphonic tones and couldn't really see what the fuss was about, until I turned on the phone and was exposed to the opening jingle, it was surprisingly clear and tuneful. Different tones can be set for different call groups / messages etc. I counted 21 preset tones ranging from very good to the frankly tacky, jazz, classical and techno. So I'm quite happy with this function. New tones are available from www.my-siemens.com/ringtones and Tesco is also marketing the phone as downloadable but I'll comment on that later. If you want to switch off the ring tones the phone can be placed on vibration alert.

- Messaging ( Both SMS and MMS ) - simple SMS messaging as normal with predictive T9 function available. MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service and enables you to send messages to compatible phones or e-mail addresses that contian a mixture of text, images, animations and sounds. I counted about 30 pre-set MMS images that you can use and you can also take images with the camera and include them and also attach business cards / data from the calendar. You can download a small application from Siemens to enable you to make messages on your computer before downloading them.

- Camera - there's a small camera in the back of the phone that can be activated by clicking 5. Now, I've been to the Siemens website and they show a picture of two girls taking their photo with the MC60 camera and you can see the image produced on the screen - good and clear and picture like. So, advertising puffs aside, I was expecting at the least a reasonable image to be produced, sure enough you can select for indoor and outdoor pictures, adjust brightness, so far so good. Unfortunately what you actually get is a pixellated grainy image with poor colour definition, frankly you'd be very lucky to decipher what the picture actually is, holding the camera very still helps a little but I still haven't been able to produce anything that I'd like to send to anyone. Still, I will persevere for a while extending the exposure time may help, and I'll update the op if I can get a decent image. If you manage to get a decent photo you can use it as wallpaper, screensaver, startup or shutdown animation or send it as part as an MMS message

- GPRS and GSM WAP internet capability.

- Tri - Band cover

- Downloadable JAVA games - the phone comes with one game standard, a rather annoying platform game called Contest Arena and more games are supposed to be downloadable at wap.my-siemens.com or www.my-siemens.com/city .

- The Phone Book allows you to allocate groups

( eg friends, family, business ), enter e-mail addresses for MMS messaging, allocate to SIM card or phone, you can voice dial a number (it will allow up to 20 voice recordings), assign a picture to a specific enty and assign different ringtones to a group.

- Organiser with calendar, agenda, memo, and alarms functions, functions can be started up with voice commands and there's also a stopwatch and currency converter available. One of the first things you need to do when starting up your phone is to set the date and time.

***GENERAL***

The phone is slightly larger and weighs a little more than my Ericsson T68i ( at 86g and 109 X 46 X 21 mm ) and the colour screen is clear and easily readable, the display can be set with screensavers and wallpaper ( which come with the phone or can be downloaded). The battery takes about 3 hours to fully charge and with that you get a Talk Time of about 6 hours and Standby of about 250 hours according to the specs. The phone is Data compatible however as it isn't Bluetooth compatible and doesn't have IR capacity you will need a serial cable (£29.99 from Siemens on-line shop). Personally I find some of the keys a little difficult to use, even though I've got small fingers I find myself using my nails to dial. Sound is excellent in this model, I can't fault Siemens on this point at all, you don't need to hold the phone to your ear to hear it as the on board loudspeaker is excellent. One very good feature of the phone is that it should be impossible to turn it on accidently, as although you could press the button and start the phone up it requires you to confirm that you actually want to start the phone. The phone has the usual call and duration records and profiles are available to set up eg if you're on a plane, noisy environment etc to give automatic settings at these times. The phone has a 9 part menu with the different functions arranged into obvious groups and easily accessible through the scroll button or the number pad.

***DOWNLOADS AND ACCESSORIES***

This phone is marketed by both Siemens and it's sellers ( currently Tesco, Dixon, T-mobile ) as having downloadable wallpaper, ringtones, games etc. However this does not seem to be the case either through WAP or the Siemens website, as yet this phone is unsupported. Frankly I think this is absolutely disgusting, they shouldn't put the phone on the market until they can provide at least minimal support, it's not necessarily something I'm personally that interested in but that's not the point. Still, I'll give them until the end of the year and then I shall be mentioning words like Trades Descriptions Act to Tesco. The phone apparently comes in shades of Titanium, Aquamarine and Grenadine and Siemen's also say that you can get coloured clip on covers for the phones but as yet these aren't available either.

***CONCLUSION***

I get the impression that this has been rushed onto the market for Christmas, there seems to be a general lack of care and attention to detail that could have improved the phone considerably, the shoddy casing stands out particularly. Siemens website actually says that the phone " offers the latest technology in digital imaging and picture messaging. With this easy-to-use tool you can share all the fun you have with your friends – anytime and anywhere " - well not from my experience of it. If you want a camera phone there are considerably better ones on the market for not a great deal more money and you would be better off buying one of those instead. That aside if the phone had been about £30 cheaper I would have said it was reasonable value for what you get and If the manufacturers, sellers and network providers get their acts together and support the phone it would get a considerably better review as it is though AVOID THE XMAS TURKEY.

CAMERA UPDATE DEC 03 :

I've been playing around with the camera a bit more and I've found that you can get reasonable photo definition for ( very )close ups. That is that you can visibly recognise the picture, you can even get a resaonable self portrait from a couple of inches away. However that said colour definition is extremely poor with everything seeming to be in sepia/orange tones on the screen at least. I was trying to catalogue some of my old CDs that didn't have a recognisable barcode and had the good idea of trying to capture the cover with the cameraphone and send it to myself via MMS. These are 2 of the results, taken from a couple of inches away they give a reasonably good image. Quite grainy if you click on one and look at a blown up image, but certainly better than the impression you get from the phone screen. Colour isn't true , but again it's better than it appears on screen.

very true about this phone, i have had it for about 6months, and i already planning on getting a newer phone. The camera is really bad you can hardly make out what is in the picture with all the blurring. My phone also freezes alot and the back cover will not stay it, constantly falls off. I am on T-mobile which is a very expensive network, and i find that the downlods, what few of them there are, are very expensive, so i have never used this function! great op!!!
