This is the phone that made me break three of my rules on technology purchases:
1. I shalt not buy into state-of-the-art technology until it's been deployed commercially at least one year. I bought a WAP phone only in August 2001, and wasn't planning on a GPRS (Generalized Packet Radio Service) handset till the 3rd quarter of this year. When the state-of-the-art was the 486, I bought a 386. But I bought the ME45 in December 2001, when GPRS was still on trial, and handsets were early releases.
2. I shalt put a cap of US$150, plus or minus 10%, on my handset. The ME45 is approximately US$300.
3. I shalt employ a handset to death before I replace it. In fact, my first two phones were practically unusable by the time I replaced them. My Nokia 2010 battery wasn't charging, and my StarTAC's back had come loose when I bought their replacements. In contrast, the Siemens M35i which replaced the StarTAC was only four months with me and still in excellent health when I treated myself to the ME45.
To be fair, it wasn't mainly the ME45's fault -- my provider Globe Telecom (I'm in the Philippines) was offering free GPRS activation and access till the end of the year (2001). I was hesitant at first because, GPRS being new technology, handsets were bound to be expensive -- I was expecting prices of upwards of US$400. But the US$300 price tag on the ME45 quickly set me checking my bank balance. I had also just gotten a new project and thought that the ME45 was the perfect excuse for a celebration. So much for rules.
WELL WORTH IT Even if you don't use GPRS, the ME45 would be a very good phone. You can get more details at http://www.my-siemens.com/MySiemens/CDA/Index/0,2730,HQ_en_0_product%253AMW%252FHD%252FHD%252FME45%252Fdesc,FF.html. If that link doesn't work, go to http://www.my-siemens.com, then scroll down to ME45 from the Go to... picklist. The first thing I'd like to discuss about the ME45 is the legendary Siemens durability. I'd had four months with my M35i and expected about the same from the ME45. I must say that the former even *feels* more solid, and I was apprehensive about the ME45's durability. I no longer have doubts -- I banged the ME45 hard on a table in a fit of frustration (more on that later), and no scratches or dents. I've since tried harder to control my temper because the warranty doesn't cover revenge on a phone that dies when I'm sending a text message. On the other hand, one thing I can't avoid is dropping it -- it's survived a couple of falls from my pocket, although I wouldn't do that deliberately.
The handset has the same rubber plugs that make the M35i water-resistant. I'm not comfortable though, with the battery cover, or with the SIM socket. The hooks on the M35i's battery cover fit neatly into a recessed portion of the back -- there is no such recess on the ME45. It seems too easy to snap off the hooks on the ME45, and, while I have to admit that the feel is subjective, you won't find me testing their durability.
As to the SIM socket, I miss the little tray of the M35i -- the SIM slides directly onto a slot in the battery case. Trouble is, I have to bend the SIM slightly to make it fit. Apparently, once you've inserted the SIM, you're not supposed to take it out too often.
Great looks None of my friends can resist taking a second look, or asking to hold the phone in their hands. It may also help that Siemens isn't the most popular handset brand, so it stands out in a sea of handsets whose brand name starts with the letter N. In any event, the Siemens design team still deserves a loud round of applause for their work.
Ergonomics The user interface took me some getting used to, having moved from an M35i. The large four-directional button below the LCD is handy though -- it takes me to either the phone/address book or the menus, in contrast with its older brother's separate menu and phone book buttons. I did, however, have to be careful with the Red-phone (cancel) button, which is too close to the right soft-key. I've cancelled an SMS message too often when I wanted to cycle through the T9 choices. Same is true with the left soft-key and the green-phone (off-hook) button, which took me to the SMS send menu when I wanted to backspace.
Speaking of SMS, I find it tedious to switch to numeric mode. I have to tap the * key once, wait a while, then tap it again -- I find it easier to switch T9 off, then back on again when I'm done typing in the numbers. Nice thing though is that the LCD shows the characters associated with the key so it's easier to anticipate the desired character.
Compatibility with PalmOS Here's a cool feature: I could send addresses or appointments from the phone via IR to my Handspring, and they got into the address book and calendar, respectively. I could also send address book entries from my Handspring to the phone, which treated it as a vcard that I could then either discard or save into my address book. PalmOS appointments, on the other hand, are not beamable, and even if they were, they'd be too long for the phone's appointment section anyway.
Frills Don't look for changeable covers. I don't know that Siemens could've added that feature and retained water resistance. There are, however, a large number of melodies, and -- shades of Nokia! -- you can compose your own or download them via WAP or IR. You can also change the operator logo. I downloaded a Star Trek tricorder "skin" off http://www.club-siemens.com.
Bad news I mentioned earlier that, in a fit of frustration, I slammed the unit on the table when it died as I was choosing the destination phone number of a text message. That was particularly annoying since I had to compose the text message all over again. It's died on me on a number of occasions, twice in succession when I was saving a number into the address book. To be fair, I'm still at firmware 5, and the latest as of this writing is fw14. This is one reason I hesitate to use a version 1.0 release of anything, although in the case of the ME45, I can easily upgrade anyway to the latest firmware, for free. Downside is that I have to go to a service center, I can't do it myself by downloading the image off the Internet. I suppose this is Siemens's way of ensuring that users are getting the upgrade right. In any event, I'm upgrading my firmware "once I have the time."
Lastly, I can't do a fair assessment of the phone's GPRS performance because that's mainly carrier-dependent. For whatever it may be worth, my informal tests showed throughput in the 5 kilobit-per-second range, which is about what I'd get on a true v.90 (56K) connection.
The phone is near-perfect. If it didn't keep dying on me, I'd have given it five stars out of five. I know, fw14 is supposed to fix the bugs, but I do have to review the handset in its current state. Maybe, when I upgrade to fw14, I can go back to this review and give the ME45 the five-star rating. For now, the four stars rating stands. This is one phone I'm keeping till it dies, which could be a long time.
Advantages: Bursting with features, nice screen, nice keyboard Disadvantages: Not all features are useful, questionable build quality
...ago. I'd opted for the Siemens because it had an abundance of useful sounding features: calendar, calculator, voice-activation, vibrate, GPRS and WAP, addressbook, serial cable synchonisation with PCs and an IR port. I found though that until I uploaded a firmware update recently, the synchronisation tool was an abject failure and the calendar function was simply too fiddly to work with. The ring tones are plentiful but they all grate awfully. There ... ...managed to get some from Siemens UK. The base gasket acts like a cushion for whenever I drop the phone - it is to be highly recommended that it is used when out and about! The seal around the battery compartment and the rubber keypad all serve to seal the handset from moisture ingress, which is a good thing. I've subjected my device to all sorts of abuse, involving both deliberate tests and inadvertent accidents. It's come back for more each time, ...

Advantages: Solid phone, easy to repair, simple to use Disadvantages: Old features
The Siemens ME45 was released in early 2001 as a hard wearing a durable mobile phone, and has had some staring roles, such as being the handset used by Jason Bourne, in the film, The Bourne Supremacy.
It was the James Bond of phones, and as testiment to its ability to bare knuckle fight off any damage, they can still be found for sale here and there, reaching high prices in comparison to other phones of its age.

i have had this phone for two years now, and i still currently use it, i personally think its one of the best, robust phones in the market. I purchased this phone from an 02 dealer in my local area.

Advantages: Strongest phone ever used - most reliable Disadvantages: none really, just a bit old!
Old, but strong!
No really decent features in comparison to the newer phones, but when new, it came with plugs to keep moisture out of the charging / accesory port and antenna port respectively, as well as a ring for the battery compartment.
It can be dropped on concrete and in water, this phone is almost indestructable. It is also certified as intrinsically safe, one of very few phones to be so - meaning it is safe to use in areas of explosive ... ...the phone still reaches higher prices on the second hand market.
It is of course compatible with a whole range of accesories, including the fitted handsfree kit, which simply works wonderfully with this little baby.
Its ability to be used for data transfer with a cable or infra red connections was most useful when this sort of this was in its infancy, and I believe 56k was easily obtainable.
At altitude and in extreme temperatures the device works ...

Advantages: Sleek, silver and full of gadgets Disadvantages: Fiddly menu system
It has finally arrived on my doormat .... my new phone - the Siemens SL45!
Recommended to me by a colleague in work I just had to get it.
Sleek, silver and so fully of gadgets, it is miles above any other handset I have personally seen so far. Good size, light weight and good to look at, the SL45 is also a very functionable phone. Links to my PDA and MS Outlook easily. Integral multimedia card for storing music, ringtones, screensavers etc is limited in size but can be upgraded.
Downside is that the menu is a little confusing, but the display area is larger than most and very clear.
Small aeriel gives me better reception than previous handsets without gettig in the way.
Recommend this to business users, gadget freaks and those who want to pose. ...

I bought one Nokia 3310 two years ago but a few months ago I miss the mobile phone. Well, I try to buy another mobile phone but I looked and looked and I didn't found another mobile like this. I was thinking in buy the 3330 but it seemed too expensive for me and I continued looking for my perfect mobile phone. Now I have one Siemens c45 and it's perfect for me.
I didn't think four years ago, when I bought my first mobile handset, that I will need my mobile handset as I need it. The most amazing thing is the technology of the new mobile handsets, and the small size that all the phones has now. At first when a mobile handset you only can made phone calls and recieved it but now you can make a lot of thing with a mobile handset: you can play, send messages, recieved messages, connect to the wap, ..... and also you have a lot of options ...
