There comes a time in most people’s lives when they realise they will never achieve their ambitions. For me this happened at Christmas. Let’s face it; I am unlikely ever to be able to buy the sports car of my dreams, so the Porsche has to remain forever a fantasy. Or does it?
And then I saw it. Sitting slightly aloof on its own on a shelf in John Lewis: A sleek silver cylinder of brushed aluminium, topped with curvaceous buttons and warning lights in red and green. Porsche badges flashed on the sides. What is this thing?
Well, actually, it’s only a kettle. And a ludicrously expensive one at that. As fragrant wife pointed out rather forcefully at the time, on the shelf below was a device with equivalent functionality for under £20 while the Porsche was priced at £75, and as far as she was aware, our kettle wasn’t exactly broken. “Yet” I muttered under my breath. For I had fallen for the silver beauty. Fragrant wife prised my hands from my object of desire and dragged me back to the comfy slipper department where we transacted our business.
Later that evening I scoured Google to find sources for my new obsession, finding several sites only too anxious to supply my fever. Prices ranged from the JL shop quote up to £100 or more on some of the gift sites, so be warned to shop around, unless the act of paying a higher price somehow gives even more merit to the acquisition. Furtively, I slipped over to smallappliances.co.uk and placed my order.
Two days later a large package arrived. Aha!
The actual kettle is indeed a thing of beauty, but you want to know more practical stuff. Fragrant wife certainly did, so here is how I sold it to her: Despite being metal the kettle is cool touch with a tough special grade plastic interior. A good safety feature is that the kettle will only switch on when the lid is closed; there is a special lid release button, which allows one-handed filling. Of course the kettle is cordless and has cord storage in its base.
You can put it on its base in any direction because it has a circular stand, handy at the end of that liquid dinner when it’s coffee time.
It’s big. You can boil 1.5 litres at once if you choose. The concealed element also allows you to boil only a cup if you prefer. An external gauge shows you how full your beauty is, and it won’t overheat.
We live in a hard water area, but if you slosh a bit of vinegar inside and over the brushed aluminium exterior any limescale dissolves in no time. A word of advice, though, leave some visible mark that the kettle is filled with other than water or sharp words from FW will follow when she sips her vinegar-tea.
Drawbacks:
Only one. Porsche and Siemens have expanded the range to offer a toaster, coffee-machine and juicer on the same theme. All crushingly beautiful and disgustingly expensive for what they do. I’m beginning to fear for the health of our coffee-machine and after nearly 20 years of marriage it really is time we got an electric juicer!

I too have to the disgust of my family spent £75 on this kettle. Only had it one day, but no grumbles so far! Nice op, funny too!
