After having a Motorola C350 for some time I decided that it was time for a change. I looked up the Siemens S55 along with its rivals, the Nokia 6610(i) and the Ericsson T68. And upon deciding on this one I searched on the internet. To my surprise there was a hefty £150 price tag on this phone. Upon realising the fact that my wallet was going to be empty if I bought it, I looked on eBay and found several S55s for around £50.
This phone was brand new and it came with a, camera, handsfree, neck strap, PC cable and 2 instruction manuals, 1 for the phone and 1 for the camera.
This phone is around the same size as its rivals and fits nicely into the palm of your hand. It is also quite light being just 85g in weight. The design of the phone is a kind of elongated oval and the phone is very tactile. The shiny metal rims around the screen and on the speaker make the phone look classy.
The keypad is tiered and the star and hash keys are quite small, however I find that I rarely use these. There are 2 "soft keys" which are used to access the menu and you can program the left one with a shortcut of your choice. Also there is a navigation pad which consists of 4 arrows, left, right, up and down and are used to navigate the menus. On the right hand side there is a button which can be used to "mark" or select different items when in a menu or it is the key to operate the "dictation machine". On the left hand side there is the volume control which you can use in a call to raise or lower the speaker volume. When in standby you can select Profiles using these keys and when the camera is attatched you use those keys to take a picture. However the keypad is quite tactile.
The battery is under a cover which is easy to get off if you have fingernails and the battery is secured in place by a small clip. In my old phone when I dropped it the back cover came off and the battery came out. However in this phone the battery cover is securely clipped on and the battery is secured in place by the clip.
On the back of the phone there is a small hole which seems to appear on all Siemens phones and I presume is for an external aerial.
The phone has a wide range of connectivity options. It has email for the buisness user. You can send and receive email. It has MMS, which is Multimedia Messaging which enables the user to send text, sound and pictures to another MMS capable phone. It has text messaging. It has Bluetooth which I use with a Bluetooth headset when driving because there are no cables and it has infrared which can be used to connect to a PC or another infrared device.
The phone comes with a PC connection cable and the software. I have used this regularly and have found no flaws with it. You can syncronise MS Outlook or another similar program. You can also transfer files onto the S55's "Filesystem". Files such as ringtones pictures and games can be sent back and forth with ease.
The only problem with this phone is the screen can only display 256 colours, however, this is only a problem when viewing photos and does not affect games etc.
The S55 allows the user to download games, ringtones and pictures. Games are in the JAVA format, ringtones can be MMF or MIDI, and pictures can be Jpeg, Gif or Bmp.
The phone also features a loudspeaker for calls, you can turn this on and then put the phone on a nearby surface and you can talk to and hear the person from around 3 feet away, the quality of the speaker is very good and I find it better than the loudspeaker on the 6610.
All accesories either plug into the universal slot on the bottom of the phone or connect wirelessly via Bluetooth.
The Battery standby time is very good, I can leave my phone on standby for around a week and can talk on it for around 4 hours without the battery running out.
The reception quality is very impressive, in an Underground station I have four out of five bars of signal and the speaker quality is crisp and clear and the person at the other end had always been able to hear me clearly.
The camera clips onto to the bottom of the phone and has a maximum resolution of 640x480 and the pictures come out very well on the PC. You can select a screen sized shot or a larger picture that you can put on the PC.
The phone has a Dictaphone function which can be used to record memos or conversations.
The phone has extensive organiser functions including a calander, task list, notes, calculator, stopwatch, countdown timer, voice activated functions and a world time clock. With the notes function, you can choose to protect the notes with a code.
All in all, if you pay out £50 for this phone on eBay you are getting a LOT of phone and features for your money.
...superior and more logical - Siemens need to rethink their layout.

This was an expensive, new phone and newer phones have easily surpassed this one. I regret the purchase and look forward to when I can justify changing this phone.

Advantages: Bluetooth, Camera, MIDI Ringtones, Dictaphone Disadvantages: MMS doesn't work, attachable camera keeps falling off, buttons fall off!
...phone, but not with my Siemens S55! No, of course it has to be different. Dropped the phone one day, expecting maybe the battery cover to pop off - but nope! That thing is practically welded shut. What happened? The silver-effect display surround fell off leaving an ugly grey (but obviously ineffective) glue instead of the shiny surround. Since then, I've been losing around one button per week (BPW). It started with the power/call end button. Then ... ...dial key is going to be next. This morning, number 3 fell off. So I find myself managing to type whole text messages without the letters D, E and F!
There are some things about this phone which I haven't been able to fault yet! A reasonable quality dictophone, calculator, WAP, etc. One thing I particularly like is that you can use MIDI ringtones. That means I can write my own on my keyboard as well as download some from the internet. And there's ...

...necessary software on CD, although Siemens provide an area on the website to download any software available, they also have an area to download ring tones etc. although this isn’t free.
So far I have had no problems with this phone, it seems to be quite robust too, the build quality seems better than a Nokia and it even withstood a pint of larger being spilt over it, whoops!!
All in all this is a good phone, the functions are more business suited ... ...function, you will find this excellent, especially if you travel a lot.
The only let downs with this phone is the low res screen, the buttons seem a little fiddly at first and it’s a wee bit complicated to configure properly.
I'm not finished yet, I'm gonna do some more work with the phone and see what happens, update soon.
UPDATE: 27/08/03
After really getting to grips with this phone i've found it to be a useful business tool. I regularly use ...

...Book: According to siemens the address book can hold 250 addresses at 14 fields per entry. Mine certainly is not that big.
GPRS: An always on connection to the internet on your phone which can be enabled via registration to your mobile telephony provider. Class 10 GPRS at 58kbps download (pretty fast/comparable to dial-up computer speeds). And half that for upload.

Siemens CD:
Comes with the Siemens Data Suite which has all your ringtone editing/graphics editing/GPRS etc... A java game is also hidden in the folders of the CD. Advantages: looks cool Disadvantages: not very hi-tech
THE LOOK This phone is, I think very attractive, its mainly grey but the buttons and the battery cover are silver. On the left side of the phone is a chrome button for call volume, on the right hand side is a voice memo button (also chrome) and the charger point is on the bottom. It's a good size, not too big but not so small that you are scared of losing or breaking it, it's just under four inches from top to bottom, not much bigger than the palm ... ...are a good size too so you wont be hitting the wrong ones all the time. There is a directional pad, this has 4 arrows up, down, left and right, this allows you so move around the screen easily.
This phone is also very strong I have dropped it several times on nights out and it still works perfectly and has no visible damage.

?I Will Fly you to the moon and back if you?ll be, if you?ll be my baby?.
My dirty old Nokia 3310 was past its sell-by-date years ago so I have to admit to getting ridiculously over excited at the prospect of a new phone. So many decisions to be made. Colour, polyphonic ringtones, games, and camera, one of those flip clamshell types or a standard Nokia style? Given my self-imposed budget of £60 surely I had given myself little leeway regarding the type of phone I could purchase?
Never underestimate the dididave obsession with bargain hunting. It is rare that I pay full price for anything and as such revel in the underground culture that is the boot sale, charity shop and online auction world. Trawling through the Internet back alleys in search of my next gadget I came across the Siemen?s SL55. This little beauty retails ...

Advantages: Great picture quality / camera Disadvantages: One game
This phone is superb. When my contract ran out I got a SiemensS55 camera attachment phone, the picture quality was poor and the menua was poor so I sent it back and decided on this phone.
The camera is very easy to use, press one button for the camera then click to take a pic!!
The menu is quite similar to the Sony Ericsson T68 / T68i phones in that you have various picture menu's to go thru. If you are used to a Nokia, this may take a while to get used to, but that is part of the fun!
the picture quality is unbelievable, it is nearly true picture quality and it is better than the small cheap digital cameras you can buy.
the ringtones are superb, I have downloaded loads of free ones from various Wap sites.
The only thing at the moment I can see wrong with this phonce is the fact it has only one game as standard. You can ...

Advantages: Stylish design Disadvantages: Lack of features
For the first time ever, technology has taken a backward leap. Having previously used a SiemensS55, until dropping it in a puddle, I assumed that a brand new Siemens MC60 would be a good investment.
£90 it cost - it was £30 cheaper two weeks later - I wonder why. Well, the Siemens MC60 is a lovely phone. It has a stylish design with attractive buttons and a nice shape. That's about it.
No bluetooth, no infrared, low sound quality, fuzzy screen display, integrated camera with no cover. To top it off, Siemens thought it would be a good idea to let T-Mobile had plastered all their advertising stuff on it, which took away the 'Filesystem' item on the main menu.
To top it off - I should try and dry out my old S55 - it was a much better offering from Siemens. ...
