Shortly after my Panasonic phone decided that it was going to stop working, I decided that I needed a new phone. Id been wanting a new phone for a thew months but now that my one was broken(by no fault of my own) I actually had an excuse to treat myself to a nice new mobile. I decided I wanted a SL55 so searched the shops and after finding the best price to be £200 I looked on eBay, where I then got my phone!
The phone itself is absolutely tiny, the keypad slides out from underneath and I believe it was one of the first phones to incorporate this function. The phones shape is very nice and it is so light that you really can forget that you have It with you. The screen is a fair size and the five buttons on the front of the phone allow you to fully navigate without sliding the keypad down.
When purchasing your phone you can decide between two colours, charcoal or ruby. Myn is ruby and it illuminates beautifully with the white LED’s of the phone glowing through the red fascia and making it look very smart.
Unfortunately the phones screen does get easily marked with just about anything, however it is possibly to clean it off. I was told that the phone case scratched and dented easily but it is a problem that iam yet to face, it seems quite robust to me. Saying that you should make a effort to clean the ridges that the keypad slides on every now and then to ensure smooth running
The phone itself is a powerful wee beastie and has all the functions that a phone of this days and age it expected to have.
The messaging service on this phone is particularly good, you can send and receive basic SMS with EMS add ons if you want. You can also send MMS and configure your phone to download all the emails in your inbox so that you can check you e-mail whilst on the move.
The phone is on a tri-band frequency which means that It can be used in most countries world wide.
The phone does work as a camera phone, although only when you buy the camera attachment(about £20 on eBay). The picture quality of the camera is quite good from what Ive seen and you have the option of getting the camera with a built in flash.
The address book is also pretty swish allowing you to store multiple numbers under one name, so now I can have all my girlfriends numbers under one profile rather than have “Vicki Home, Vicki Mob, Vicki Work” all separately. On top of that you can enter additional details such as people postal addresses and email addresses.
The calendar is particularly good on this phone allowing you to store up to 500 different events and dates, which you can also set reminder alarms for, add phone numbers, location and further detail in a easily navigatable manor.
Some of the phones other features are a very loud alarm clock(which never fails to wake me up), a countdown clock, Calculator, Currency Converter and Stop Watch.
All the phones pictures, messages, games etc are stored in one multimedia folder with lots of other folders coming off of it(like on a computer). All the things in this multimedia folder can be accessed via other menus but it allows you to check Whats in your files and delete unnecessary files etc.
One of the particularly stylish thing about this phone is the voice dial function. By pressing and holding one of two buttons you activate the voice receiver, you tell the phone who to call, what file to open and it does it! Although it is worth bearing in mind that you have to pre-record all of theses voice commands. There is still a lot of room for improvement in the voice command section but still it’s a pretty swish function.
The phone has a fast wap function, fast wap as the name would suggest is a lot faster than the standard wap program that most phones have, it is also apparently cheaper and a lot less tedious and boring to use. You can download all sorts of games for you phone, the phone comes standard with a tennis game and ray man golf. The tennis game is a game in which you basically play tennis tournaments to win money to buy better equipment and train your player up to be the very best. Rayman golf is just as the name would suggest and is quite fun. Both games pass time whilst waiting at the bus stop! My phone also has a application with the phone called unit converter which allows you to convert all sorts of clothing, shoe and distances into other countrys sizes and distances, it’s a really handy program!
The phone has particularly good security with all manor of codes. You have the standard Pin Codes along with phone codes which mean your phone wont work if another simcard is palces in it as well as the babysitter function was means no nosey little sods can pick up your phone and start reading your dirty text messages:-p. It also has all the standard call barrings allow you to block incoming, outgoing and foreign calls.
The phone also has many other common functions such as call records, hot keys, different sound profiles and so on.
They phones ringtones are quite impressive and there is quite a large selection, they have a crisp sound and are quite advanced polyphonic ones. Unfortunately the choice of text message alerts is particularly good or loud. You can also set your phone to make sound when you open or close it which is a novelty but comes annoying incredibly quickly.
The instruction manual included with the phone is not particularly detailed although also included is a CD with a full instruction manual which is easy to use and has everything that you could possibly want to know about the phone.
The phones battery time was pretty good when I first got it, I would be able to leave it on for in excess of 48 hours talk on it for 1 hour play games and send loads of texts! Now I have to charge it every 24 hours when I haven’t used it at all and every 12 hours when I have! Saying that the instruction manual did warn you to change the battery every 3 months and it is now 4 months old so I should probably be thinking about getting a new one soon.
Data cables are readily available for the phone allowing you to back up your phones memory and transfer pictures, screensavers and games to your phone. Off the market a data cable is £15 and off of eBay it is £5 and when you buy it from eBay you more often then not get a disk full of games and pictures included with the cable aswell, where off the market you only get the cable!
There are a Varity of fascias available for these phones although you have to look a bit further than your local market Stoll and you have to have a specially T9 screw driver to open your phone up and change the cover. Again I cant recommend eBay enough for this sort of thing as there are so many people selling these things that the market becomes flooded and prices just keep going lower and lower.
I bought my phone for £130 off a bloke who had owned it for a month and found it to fiddly, this meant I still had 11 months warranty on it and that it was practically in mint condition. Not a bad deal really. I think they are commonly available now for about £160 on pre-pay.
The reception on the phone is very good and as far as I can tell people can hear you on the other end well aswell.
The menus are easy to navigate and overall the phone has a nice look and feel to it aswell as some sweet functions. Overall I would have to say it’s a very nice looking and very powerful phone which is soon going to be made further better when its update is released sometime soon!
Advantages: Stylish, compact, packed with features. Disadvantages: Texting can be a little difficult at first.
“I Will Fly you to the moon and back if you’ll be, if you’ll be my baby”.
My dirty old Nokia 3310 was past its sell-by-date years ago so I have to admit to getting ridiculously over excited at the prospect of a new phone. So many decisions to be made. Colour, polyphonic ringtones, games, and camera, one of those flip clamshell types or a standard Nokia style? Given my self-imposed budget of £60 surely I had given myself little leeway regarding the ... ...dididave obsession with bargain hunting. It is rare that I pay full price for anything and as such revel in the underground culture that is the boot sale, charity shop and online auction world. Trawling through the Internet back alleys in search of my next gadget I came across the Siemen’s SL55. This little beauty retails at £129 but can be found on ebay for as little as £55. This phone is all about the look. It is the ultimate in compact and sexy. ...

Advantages: Super stylish phone! Want to look good? Just whip it out! Disadvantages: Easy to scratch, cannot find a case for it.
...I have owned many Siemens phones, even the earlier model of this sliding design, and have not had a single problem with them yet. I have also owned motorola phones and Sony phones (I will NOT touch a Nokia phone as long as I live) and have been dissatisfied with them, so I came straight back to Siemens.
Even though the phone is small it feels very sturdy and solid. Most small phones feel like they will snap if you put too much pressure on them, ... ...copes with the heavy weights and sparks and metal dust that I subject it to. The buttons are nicely raised allowing you to easily distinguish which buttons you are pressing without even looking (ideal for texting while driving - which I would never do of course).
The screen is of a fair size and has a very helpful display system with the 2 function buttons on each side of the bottom of the screen allowing easy access to many functions saving time ...

Advantages: Small, looks cute Disadvantages: How long have you got???????
...Also, whoever thought at Siemens that it was a good idea to have the 1 key as a space key and the zero key as the full stop and other symbol key...well, get a grip. Every other phone manufacturer as far as I know has it the other ways round. I was forever putting in full stops instead of spaces when typing out texts!
The sliding mechanism is simply horrible. I have tried the slides on the Samsung E600 and E800 - smooth as silk quality engineering. ... ...of the phone wobble around a little - it is just poor.
Sound quality and phone reception - poor. I live about 500 years from a mast. On the 2 Samsungs and 1 Nokia I have had, the reception meter aways showed 100%. On the SL55 it mostly showed 50%. No idea why. Reception while using the phone seemed to be poor wherever you were. It has polyphonic sound, but it is very fuzzy compared to other poly phones I have heard.
The menu system was a little ...

Advantages: Looks gorgeous and is so small! Disadvantages: Breaks and scratches easily, low talktime
...this time I saw the Siemens SL55 and simply wanted it. Because I am not really a technical hero, the looks did it for me to be honest.
Looks: You can get this tiny beauty (length x width x height = 81.6 x 44.5 x 21.9 mm) in titan and rubin. It slides open and reveals the keyboard. At the beginning I had to get used to it, as the keyboard is different from a Nokia one. After you get the hang of it, it is easy to use. It has a colour screen, which ... ...no problem. I dropped my Siemens one and bang, black screen. Nothing I could do about it, so I took it to a technician. Guess what they told me - it is possible that they cannot fix it! I would have lost all my numbers! Luckily they were able to fix it, but I recommend that you save your numbers somewhere else, just in case. The battery could last longer and sometimes the phone crashes and you have to wait before you can do anything. When you start ...

...features. I got this new siemens phone because i thought it would be advanced in that it would have most of the features that you would get with other phones. The phone comes in two colours in titan or ruby red. This was so that i wouldnt have to get a newer phone in just a few months time. The phone is quite small and is approximatly 82x45x22mm in size and weighs 79g. It has quite a lot of the normal features such as calculator, stopwatch and messaging ... ...of features. The Siemens SL55 has most of the new features for example although it doesnt come with a in built camara, you can still attach one separately to it. Although it could be costly when brought separately. THe power supply and the memory of the camara are supported by the phone itself and you can send photos directly to other phones via MMS. The camara is approximatly 66.2x42.8x18.3mm in size and weighs approximatly 35g.

Advantages: Excellent MP3 and radio facility, expandable memory, games work well. Disadvantages: Call quality a little quiet, no flash on camera.
Like any man, I love my technology. My shiny new Sony Ericsson W850i is my new toy and I can happily spend hours fiddling with it. After three years with my battered, war hardened SiemensSL55 I thought it was time for an upgrade but I was buggered if I was going to pay the £250 retail price for this. Step forward Vodafone who enthusiastically offered me the phone for free on an eighteen month contract. Of course as with all contracts you pay a hefty monthly sum but I find £12.50 per month for six months and £25 thereafter quite reasonable. Particularly as it includes 300 minutes and 500 texts which is adequate for my needs and means I rarely get a phone bill.
Anyhow, back to the phone itself. The W850i is by no means the smallest phone on the market. In fact it is considerably brick like. This is not a palm of your hand phone! This ...
Advantages: Lightweight, cheap Disadvantages: Dated, lacking modern features
Working for a branch of Siemens, I get to play with all the different phones, including some that are never released in Britain. The C55 along with the SL55 (the review for which can be found here - http://www.ciao.co.uk/SiemensSL55Review5368709) are the phones that I mainly use, and for good reasons.
The C55, is a fully functional little phone, with many of the more advanced features such as polyphonic ringtones and GPRS WAP, all for a small price, looking at a few sites on the web, I've noticed you can get one of these beauties for as little as £60.
The phone comes with two reasonably good games (Galaxy Hero and Prince of Persia) and it is possible to download more through Java technology.
It also comes with 30 polyphonic ringtones (although for some reason 5 of these are of the noises that different animals make - just ...
