The Sierra Nevada Brewing Company of Chico, California, is arguably considered to be one of the top craft breweries in the USA - it's also probably the most famous and is well-known for its full-of-character and complex beers. First seeing the light of day in 1980, they brewed the first batch of what would soon become their flagship ale: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Until quite recently, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was one of those beers that I'd heard good things about but had never managed to find. So imagine my delight when a local supermarket began stocking it last year. I know, I'm easy pleased. Actually, although I am relatively easy-to-please, in an undemanding, who-gives-a-fnck-anyway sort-of-a-way, I do take my beer seriously. Well, not exactly seriously, it's just beer after all, but I much prefer to drink one or two quality beers than chugging down six-packs of burp-juice. So, when everyone else trundles home from the shops with bulky crates of chemical fizz and a bottle of hair-conditioner, I skip home with just a few select, well-crafted beers that are bottle-conditioned.

Speaking of alcohol...
Three married couples died and when they got to the pearly gates. St.Peter told the first husband, "I can't let you in. You let alcohol run your life. You even married a girl named Sherry." Dejected, he turned and walked away.
The next married couple stepped up, and St.Peter told the husband, "Can't let you in sir. While you were on earth, you allowed money to run your life. You even married a girl named Penny." The guy hung his head, turned and walked away.
The husband of the third couple waiting in line, overheard both conversations and said, "Come on, Fanny, we're wasting our time."
Back to the beer...
THEY SAY: "Our most popular beer is a delightful interpretation of a classic style. It has a deep amber color and an exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. Generous quantities of premium Cascade hops give the Pale Ale its fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor. It opens with bright, perky high notes of maltiness and orange blossom and segues into a delectable hoppiness."
This beer pours a slightly hazy, pale golden colour which has a fairly aggressive carbonation that leads to a big and fluffy, pure white head of foam which shrinks a little, but never disappears and leaves plenty of sticky lace on the glass.
The aroma literally reeks of hops. It's fragrant, floral, citric and zesty. There's also lots of fruity tones, but the malt is there too with hints of caramel and a grainy touch.
It's medium-to-full bodied, with a good, firm mouthfeel. The taste is initially of sweet malt with bready and biscuity tones, but this is but a prelude to the dominating hop profile. It's sharp and citric, fruity and fiery, with more than enough hop bitterness to go around. That's not to say it's one-sided, oh no. The malt sweetness may be in the background, but it somehow manages to keep a check on the hop profile, holding it fairly well balanced. It finishes with a slow, dry bitterness that lingers and leaves a satisfying aftertaste.
• The Verdict •
At 4.8% ABV, this is a treasure. I prefer my beers to lean towards the maltier spectrum, but that's not to say I don't appreciate a good flourish of hops now and again, especially when they're so 'in your face' as with this beer. Apparently, Sierra Nevada are famous for their heavy-handed (in a good way) use of hops, and I can find no reason to criticise them on that score. But this beer doesn't sacrifice malt character in its quest for hoppy-heaven. There's enough going on in the background with the malt to stop the beer from becoming unbalanced yet still allowing the hops to burst forth like a leafy, stinging slap in the face. A nice bit of brewing.
This beer would compliment almost any sort of food - the website suggests spicy food in particular, but for me this is an out-n-out session ale, so I say nuts!...or crips, even.
Would I drink it again? - I'd be hopping mad not to.
...One of them was called Sierra Harvest Ale (one to look out for), and I absolutely fell in love with it. So I set out to find it at a store, but to no avail. I did find this stuff, though, so I researched it instead...
The Sierra Nevada brewery was founded in 1979 by Ken Grossman in Chico California. His goal was simply to "brew exceptional ales and lagers." He started small producing 5-gallon batches of beer locally, and by 1997 the company was ... ..."Our most popular beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, is a delightful interpretation of a classic style. ...hoppy pale ale from the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in the USA. It is the most popular beer produced by the brewery.
I bought a couple of bottles from my local Morrisons as they seem to have a nice selection of different beers there that aren't available elsewhere. I paid about £1.50 each for a couple of small 350ml stubby bottles. It is 5.6% Alc.
There is a thin layer of sediment in the bottle due to the beer being bottle conditioned. Bottle conditioned ... ...it's not quite as strong as the Sierra Nevada. But I would still recommend that you give this a try as it is such an enjoyable drink.

Advantages: Great Taste Disadvantages: Aquiring taste
...and when ever I buy Sierra Nevada I get at least one person pumping there arm like a chicken, because this is such a strong and bold flavored beer. I've had others tell me that Sierra Nevada tastes like a tree trunk. The facts are that you may not like it the first time you try, but I assure you that to aquire a taste you must stick it out a little to enjoy it.
Great beer but irionically it's not even made in Nevada. It's made in California. ...

Advantages: A decent thirst quencher for Summer Disadvantages: It's not Summer
the hops soon kick in with some fruity, citric tones. There's a good malt presence too, with a faint hint of biscuit, but it's the hops that dominate with a spicy, gingery hit towards the finish.
The Verdict
At 5% ABV, this is a decent thirst quencher, but nothing more. I thought it was a little light in character and only a notch or two above some of the offerings from the giant brewers. Having raved about SierraNevada's PaleAle I was somewhat disappointed in this beer. That's not to say it's a bad 'un, just not anything special.
According to their website, this beer is 'complex enough to accompany any gourmet meal...great at barbecues, picnics...with spicy meats and sauces...specialty mixed salad greens...' Hmm I think they've covered all the bases there. Personally, I'd have stuck at barbecues.
A decent beer for a Summer day ...
