About the lens:
This is one of Sigma's range of lenses - at 70mm it's one of the shorter macro lenses on the market, many coming in at around 105mm. It has sigma's EX technology, from Sigma's website this means "The exterior of this lens is EX-finished to denote the superior build and optical ... Read review

cameras. The 70mm focal length gives an equivalent field of view as our popular 105mm macro lens when used on digital SLR cameras with an APS-C size image sensor. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two high refractive index SLD lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce an exceptional level of optical performance. Sigma's super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, and helps create a natural color balance. The floating focus system provides extremely high optical performance from infinity to 1:1 Macro.

compact construction. The latest optical design provides an overall length of 94.7mm/3.7inch. It is ideal for general photography such as snapshots, portraiture and landscapes. The Super Multi Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass, two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements and three aspherical lenses provide excellent correction of all types of aberrations. Superior optical performance is ensured throughout the entire zoom range. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), ensuring a quiet and high speed AF as well as full time manual focusing capability. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 38cm/15in and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.3. The rounded 9 blades diaphragm creates an attractive blur. It is possible to attach the included petal-type hood to block out extraneous light.
Possibly price, although cheaper than many macro lenses.
"...Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony/Minolta and Sigma that I can find. Online this seems to retail new now for between £350 - £400 (found at Warehouse express currently at £344.99) or can be found at times second hand for less.
Whenever looking at lenses this is a primary concern for most people - I have found the image quality of this lens to be superb, easily as good as you'd expect from a Nikon, Canon etc. versions. It gives very sharp images ..."

Manufacturer's product description
This lens would have an equivalent field of view of a 105mm telephoto macro lens when used on digital SLR cameras with an APS-C size image sensor. The narrow angle of view is a great aid for simplifying backgrounds and shallow depth of field makes it easier to handle the composition.A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two high refractive index SLD lenses provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce an exceptional level of optical performance.Sigma's super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting, and helps create a natural color balance. The floating focus system provides extremely high optical performance from infinity to 1: 1 Macro.A 'Focus Limiter Switch' in incorporated on the lens, improving the speed and accuracy of autofocus by limiting the focus range from 25.7cm to 48cm and 55cm to infinity.A screw-in lens hood is included for convenient use of circular polarizing filters. The included hood is designed so a 77mm lens front cap can be attached whilst the hood is in place.A magnification scale is displayed on the lens barrel, ensuring ease of use.
