Advantages: Optical quality. Build quality. Price. Disadvantages: Could come free with Cornflakes?
shoot macro on a FF (full frame) DSLR, the 150mm focal length is eminently more versatile. The Canon lens, doesn't come with a rotating tripod collar either. Indeed, this is an 'optional extra' which is extremely expensive. Such a device 'is' included with the Sigma. Also included, is a decent lens hood (also not included with the Canon lens) and a superb soft case. Bravo Sigma! Of course, if you use any other marque than Canon, the Canon lens isn't worth discussing!
This lens is designated EX (Excellence), which in Sigma 'speak' means it is from their top-of -the-range professional models. It is also a DG (Digital Grade) lens, meaning it has all the latest coating technology to help prevent flare and 'ghosting' from light being reflected back off the shiny digital imaging sensor in modern DLSR cameras. The good news is, it really does ...
Advantages: Good build quality and good value for money . Disadvantages: Sigma`s claims not met and a slow auto focus .
this lens, such as it having (SLD) special low dispertion and (ELD) extra low dispertion glass elements which help to provide excellent correction of colour aberrations as well as having super multi-layer lens coating to help prevent lens flare and image ghosting which are common problems with digital cameras that film cameras never had.
In my opinion however the final images shot with this lens still showed signs of ghosting and lens flare is still a problem in very bright light so these claims do not hold much water with me to be honest. It is however a very decent macro lens without these add ons and one that performs very well with natural light macro photography as well as flash using macroflashrings, if you attempt to use an on camera flash or a flash not designed for macro however then this lens just cannot produce the same type ...
Advantages: Build quality. Finish. Range. Fast maximum aperture. Disadvantages: Image quality not as good as expected. Chromatic Aberration.
removed whenever you choose to use the lens hand-held.
Being an EX DG lens, it is suitable for use on either FF (Full-Frame) or APS-C cropped sensor cameras when it effectively behaves like a 105-300mm f/2.8 (on Nikon APS-C), 112-320mm f/2.8 (on Canon APS-C) or 119-340mm f/2.8 on Sigma DSLR cameras. These make interesting options on the APS-C size sensor cameras and it can be assumed the camera has a completely different set of values when used with such cameras to those when used on full-frame. Interesting?
The fast f/2.8 maximum aperture provides great fun for shallow DOF (depth-of-field) shots where particularly at the 200mm end of the zoom, depth-of-field is excitingly shallow. Whilst the lens is referred to as 'macro' within it's descriptive title, the term is used somewhat loosely. True macro lenses provide genuine 1 to 1 life ...
