From the first tooth that I grew, like all mothers, my mother made sure that I cleaned my teeth well. For this twice daily task (in the morning after breakfast, and at night time just before I said my prayers) my mum always insisted that we use Signal toothpaste. I was always jealous of other kids who’s mums bought Colgate minty gel, cause in my opinion it tasted nicer. I only know this, however, because in Primary 2 our old bat of a teacher insisted that we clean our teeth at lunch time as well. So in an effort to liven up this mundane task we used to swap toothpaste, cause swapping toothbrushes was just too gross a thing to consider, even at the age of 7!
To this day, my mother insists on buying Signal toothpaste, and I have always thought that it was because she felt that it provided the best protection for our teeth. How wrong could I be? The other day I asked her why she always bought this brand, and she said “Because it’s red and white!”. Now, I’m used to my mother making such statements without developing further, so I wasn’t particularly surprised. Finally I managed to get her to develop further… red and white is Man United’s colours, and Michael (my oldest brother) is one of their most devoted fans. So there you go. Man United is responsible for me having cleaned my teeth for about 21 years with Signal toothpaste. I’m sure if they knew this that Signal would have to be paying them royalties or something.
Even though my brother has lived on the other side of the world for the last 6 years, my mum still insists on buying Signal. Show’s who was favourite in our house.
Anyway, enough of my little stories, on to tell you about this toothpaste.
Signal toothpaste comes in tubes and in dispensers (though saying that, I haven’t seen that many dispensers in recent years) - the one we use contains 50mls of toothpaste. It is produced by Elida Faberge. The packaging is coloured in red, white and blue, which seems to be a pretty popular colour scheme for toothpaste!
The actual paste is white with little red stripes down it, hence the reason my mum buys it, and has a minty taste to it.
The packaging claims that it provided family protection, which we can only assume means that it can be used by everyone, regardless of their age. They do recommend that for children under the age of 7 that a small, pea sized amount should be used along with supervised brushing to help prevent swallowing too much toothpaste. They also suggest that if you are using fluoride supplements that you should contact your doctor before using this product (this is because Signal already contains Sodium Fluoride).
They say that it protects against decay, and that along with regular check ups with the dentist, Signal should keep your family’s teeth protected. The packaging also claims that it strengthens tooth enamel and that it is clinically tested. The British Dental Health Foundation’s symbol is placed on the back of the tube and they have recognised Signal as being “a useful aid in dental health care”.
Unlike some toothpaste’s, Signal does not claim to protect your gums too, and in a day and age where we are all aware of gum disease, I think that it is important to have a toothpaste that will also protect your gums.
It is also important to rinse your mouth out with water after using toothpaste, as we found out when my younger brother’s teeth started to go yellowish. The dentist told us that if you don’t rinse your mouth with water, that the toothpaste can corrode your teeth! Scarey thought!
I have mixed views on signal toothpaste, on one side I can see that none of the kids in our family have any fillings and we all have been using this toothpaste for years, and on the other side, Signal fails to provide the gum protection necessary, so I’m afraid I’m going to have to give “old faithful” a 3 stars, for average.
Advantages: Protects against decay, strengthens tooth enamel. Cheap :-D Disadvantages: What are all these chemicals I'm putting in my mouth?
...happy ever after.
Well, Signal toothpaste doesn't appear to have one of these adverts. In fact, I don't recall any adverts for them at all. So why am I bothering to tell you about it? Well, I think it has something to do with the fact that despite not using these cruddy gimmicks it has a pretty decent market penetration. After all, I'm using it to clean my teeth with.
So the conclusion we draw is that it must sell well because it is a good toothpaste. ... ...I got my packet of Signal from Wilkinson for 69p, and that'll last me for weeks.
So remember kids, brush twice a day and after meals, and go to your dentist every 6 months for a checkup. And only give a child under 7 a pea sized amount.

...tend to stick to it.
Signal toothpaste was introduced to Europe in 1965, it is cleverly constructed, the two colours (red and white) are sufficiently viscous so they don`t run into one another.
I think that signal toothpaste may have been sidelined to a certain extent in favour of the more sophisticated toothpastes that are available on the market today.
The Signal toothpaste is packed inside of a long thin cardboard box which can be opened from ... ...good value for money.
Signal toothpaste looks good as you squeeze it from the tube, a bold and firm paste that has clearly defined red and white stripes.
A minty taste, though not too strong and as you brush it starts to build up a good refreshing lather. As you manoeuvre the toothbrush into all of the crevices the toothpaste stays firmly on the brush, it certainly offers good staying power.
One thing that stacks up in its favour for me is that ...

Signal is made by a well known company called Lever Fabergé. The box is around 8 inches by 2 inches and is oblong in shape and the colours of the box is predominantly blue fading into white with Signal written in dark blue and a picture of a sample of the toothpaste on a brush. This cost me 89p from Spar but would think it would be 15p cheaper at a local supermarket.
I would recommend this for everyone to use and even if like me you do not like mint toothpaste, then this is not bad in an emergency. However I think that the hotness of this might be a bit too much for younger children and they might be better sticking to fruity flavours.
But I despise any ...

I buy Signal toothpaste because I dont like toothpastes that have a strong taste of mint and above all, this is very affordable. I buy it from Morrisons for around 59p. It is widely available from most supermarkets and other shops.
The toothpaste comes in a 50ml tube which is in a box. The main colours on the box and tube are red, blue and white with Signal written in bold dark blue letters.
On the box it says it has family protection, ... ...your dentist this is because Signal already contains Sodium Fluoride.
Although we brush our teeth everyday, we still need regular dental check ups. The flouride concentration in Signal actually strengthens tooth enamel, hardening teeth on the outside and so helping to protect against decay.
On the box it also says that parents should ensure that children brush their teeth twice a day and that children under 7 should use a pea sized amount to minimise ...

Advantages: Fresh breath and proven protection Disadvantages: None I have found yet
So why do you use the toothpaste that you do? Because you have always used it, because Boots had a two for one offer on it or because you wanted the try the latest thing? Signaltoothpaste is the one I've always used, Colgate toothpastes are often on offer (and that's why I have this Total Fresh Stripe) and the latest herbal toothpaste just doesn't appeal (especially after reading an opinion about it on Ciao).
Colgate Total Fresh Stripe is a minty, striped (surprise!) toothpaste that has been clinically proven to provide anti-bacterial protection against cavities, plaque, bad breath, tartar and gum problems. It is accredited by the British Dental Association and contains flouride, but if you are already using flouride supplements, it advises you to consult your dentist first. It claims to provide long lasting protection between ...

When I was a kid I remember using signaltoothpaste and thinking nothing could top that. I wasn’t aware of what it did, but it sure did taste nice! I recall one time – actually writing a letter of complaint to the manufacturers of signal as my toothpaste didn’t have any stripes!
Then I got married and we bought the cheapest best name available. But now I have discovered Aquafresh, who it appears, have been around for some 25 years now. Made by Smithkline Beecham, the said toothpaste has three stripes, similar to my old favourite!
Being patriotic I suspect is why the strips are coloured red, white and blue. And Aquafresh is now the UK’s favourite striped toothpaste!
Smithkline Beecham make the toothpaste in three ...
