I really enjoy baking and have recently become a little obsessed with making cup cakes and all sorts of tasty treats. You can use normal granulated sugar for cooking but I prefer to use caster sugar as it is much finer so does not leave a grainy consistency behind and helps make sponges much lighter. The caster sugar I use is the Silver Spoon one which can be purchased in most larger supermarkets.
My last purchase of the Silver Spoon caster sugar was from Tesco and cost £1.09 for a 1kg bag which I thought was fairly good value for a branded item.
The sugar comes packaged in a paper bag, for just sugar the packaging is quite cheery with a orange background with a large spoon and tractor picture on the front. On the back and sides of the bag you can find some information about the production of the caster sugar, storage instructions, nutritional information and also a recipe idea for fairy cakes.
The sliver spoon caster sugar is grown and produced in the UK and it states on the pack that the sugar travels fewer miles from field to spoon than any other sugar. I do like to see products that support British farmers and this sugar has the assured food standards tractor logo printed on the bag several times to show this.
As I stated this sugar is perfect for baking as the crystals are much finer than standard sugar. Obviously it is still white sugar and you can still use it for things like adding to hot drinks but I tend to save it just for baking. With the finer crystals even if you use this sugar in butter cream for example it means that you are not left with a grainy consistency. Overall I would certainly recommend this caster sugar it is fantastic quality and is certainly a staple item for any bakers cupboard.
