I only have short hair, but the style I keep does require hairspray to hold it and there are only two brands that I use that I find actually hold your hair (and are quite easily avaliable) without it looking like you've glued your style in place. I have very thick but not very controllable hair, i find that a slght breeze has my hair flying out of control and being so thick - it really can look a sight - that's why i decided to try Silvikrin spray maximum hold.
