I was sitting here, cleansing my face with a Simple Cleansing Facial Wipe, puzzling over what should be my next subject for a review. I seem to have burnt myself out in the past weeks. After a few moments, I realized the answer was before my very eyes - literally!
~ ~ ~ About the brand ~ ~ ~ Simple is a well-established and long time trusted name in the skin care industry. The first Simple product was a soap bar launched in 1960, and for the 46 years since they have been churning out various different kinds of skin care products. The soap back then was the first ever to be 100% perfume and colour free, a claim which Simple still maintain about all their products to date.
1978 saw the release of the first ever skin care 'regime' based on the three principles of cleanse, tone, and moisturize. Since then, Simple has been perfecting and expanding this series to today's product line, featuring ranges for men, women, and babies alike. They also moved away from just facial care, producing products for hands and body as well. What's more there are toiletry and sun care ranges available.
The Simple Facial range includes a wide variety of products, and is not limited to wipes alone. They also produce various make up removal products (general and eye-specific), face masks and packs, moisturizers, cleansing lotions, day and night creams, scrubs, and toner, to name just a few.
As each of the products are perfume and colour free, and also contain no unnecessary additives, Simple claim their products are especially designed to be useable on sensitive skin - as colour and perfume are the most common allergens in cosmetics.
In 2006, Simple swept the field, triumphing in the five major product areas: * The UK's leading range of skin care and toiletries for sensitive skin * The UK's No.1 best selling skincare product - Cleansing Facial Wipes (with over 6000 packs are sold every day) * The UK's No.1 Cleansing Brand * The UK's No.1 best selling Eye Make-up Remover product * The UK's No.1 best selling range of Facial Washes (Statistics taken from www.keep-life-simple.com)
~ ~ ~ Simple Facial Wipes in particular ~ ~ ~ There are several different Simple facial wipes available on the market, each for a different purpose. The product to be reviews here is the 'Cleansing Facial Wipes'. Also available are Oil Control and Balance wipes, Regeneration wipes, Pore Refining wipes, and Exfoliating wipes.
~ ~ ~ About this product: Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes ~ ~ ~ These wipes are currently on offer in Sainsbury's (maybe other stores too, I don't know) and that is one of the main reasons I have them, I'll tell you my other reasons later. At the moment, they are 2 packs for £4, which (at 25 wipes a pack) works out to 8p per wipe. This is a great price considering 2 packs would last close to 2 months if used once daily. Their usual (Sainsbury's) price is £2.71, so 11p a wipe, which is slightly more expensive but still not at the very top of the range; then again, it isn't the bottom of the price range either. I've also seen them on sale in Wilkinson's for a few pennies less.
They come in a pale green plastic packet, with a supposedly resealable tab (but this isn't all that effective). The Simple log is printed on every side, along with the description of the product. In the background the words 'not perfumed' and 'not coloured' are printed over and over again. The front of the packet makes several claims about the wipes it contains, and these are reprinted several times around it:
-For face and eyes -Removes all make-up even waterproof mascara -100% oil and alcohol free -Not perfumed -Not coloured -No animal derivatives -Dermatological approved -'UK No. 1 Cleanser IRI 52w/e 16.4.06' (I dunno what that last bit is meant to mean!)
After a few days, the reseal tab is no longer sticky, and the wipes do dry out if the packet is not sealed. To combat this, I always keep my wipes (whatever brand) in a plastic box. One of the key factors I consider when buying wipes is to find ones that fit into the box! When folded, these are about 8cm square, and fit perfectly. Once they are opened out, each wipe is about 15cm by 18cm, more than adequate for simple facial cleaning. They aren't so small that you have to use multiple wipes in one session, but they also aren't so large that you get a lot of wastage. The packet itself is a nice size for carrying around in a handbag for on-the-go relief.
As they are unscented, the product doesn't smell strongly of anything. They do have a slight smell but it's hard to describe beyond 'that wipe smell'. Out side of the packet, an individual wipe stays moist for a couple of hours, after which it just becomes a tissue!
~ ~ ~ Performance ~ ~ ~ I don't often wear make-up, but when I do I usually feel the need to remove it very quickly as it starts to annoy me! These wipes do as they claim, in effectively removing make-up with minimal effort. Occasionally they struggle with mascara, leaving a slight residue or redness if you scrub too hard, even though they claim to work well on it, but in the end, the wipes do triumph.
Further than that, the wipes also leave your newly cleaned face feeling soft and silky. For a few minutes your face is often quite moist, but this is easily absorbed into the skin. The moisture is nice if your skin is overly hot for some reason.
My main use for these, rather than make up removal, is just general skin care, and I often use them simply to refresh my face after a long day. They work very well at removing the daily build up of grime from the skin, and, if you're sweaty, cool the skin down a lot.
A lot of the time, my skin (especially my forehead) is quite greasy (or maybe it's 'oily', I don't know what the difference is meant to be!). These wipes work well to cut through the grease, and even though they sometimes leave a slight residue, they leave the skin feeling much nicer. For a few minutes the skin stays damp from the wipe, but once this has soaked in, the skin is left soft and clean looking, and is also dry to the touch (but not 'dry' in a bad way). After using these wipes, my skin stays grease free for quite a long time.
Even though these claim to be specifically for face and eyes, I used them for a while on my arms and legs too, as a kind of baby-wipe replacement. This was while I was on an archaeological dig and the wipes proved very effective at quickly removing mud and sun cream, while leaving skin feeling refreshed. They were gentle enough to be used on heavily sunburnt skin too, without feeling the slightest irritation. On the contrary, the wipes cooled and soothed the sunburn feeling.
It is generally recommended that you use a separate moisturizer after using any facial wipe, but I don't generally do this. My face care regime is usually a wash while I'm in the shower, and a wipe with a wipe later in the day. I find that my skin doesn't need the extra moisture from another product, as these wipes do just fine by themselves.
~ ~ ~ Overall ~ ~ ~ This product means all my needs, and it meets them well. They claim to be suitable for pretty much anyone, what with their being perfume, colour, (unnecessary) additive, and animal product free. This product cleanses, tones, and refreshes in one simple wipe.
The current offer price is quite appealing, but their regular price is slightly higher. While I'd stock up on these now while they are 'cheap' I probably wouldn't buy them again at full price as there are cheaper products available that do the same thing.
The packaging could be better designed so that the wipes stayed moister for longer, and the reseal tab actually worked.
Advantages: gentle wipes which remove most make up and grime Disadvantages: resealable seal isn't really resealable for very long
...rude not to, especially when Simple products are one of the brands I do tend to buy. Saying that, to buy the wipes on their own costs about £2.50 for 25, which works out at about 10p a wipe. This could be considered a tad steep, but I if you use them once a day, then it's nearly a month's supply for a clean face.

THE PROMISE
This is always the test...does the product do what it says it will do.
These claim to be 100% perfume and colour free, with ingredients which care for even sensitive skin. So far so good, they aren't coloured, and have no distinguishable smell.
They claim to remove all traces of make up, even waterproof mascara (a miracle!) and are dermatologically tested, whcih I ...

Advantages: Do what they say on the packet Disadvantages: Packet doesn't reseal after a while
...cucumbers! The green and white Simple logo will be familiar because the company produces a lot of facial products, so I was confident I was getting a good product when I started trying these wipes. The plastic packet which holds 25 wipes says that they're 100% oil and alcohol free, with no colouring and no perfume. So the wipes are good for those with sensitive skin. The packet is easy as pie to open. On the front there is a big white lid/flap and ... ...kindly tells you to 'open here'. Peeling the lid back reveals a little opening in the packet itself, and you just need to reach 2 fingers in, grab a wipe by the edges and pull it out. It's not like a tissue box where another wipe comes half way up ready for next use, there's no faffing about at all! The lid is sticky on one side, so all you need to do is simply reseal the packet ready for next use. However, this is where the downside in the product ...

Advantages: removes most of my makeup Disadvantages: doesnt really 'clean' the skin
...my sister who swears by SIMPLE Facial Cleansing Wipes. As far as I remember I paid around £2 for the pack of 25, which is reasonable value for a popular brand item.
Stored in the plastic resealable pack they feel soft (the pack is squishy) and lifting the tab to open the pack there is a pleasant clean fragrance which I believe is the aloe vera. Pulling one out they are a fairly standard size and are a soft cottony feeling material, so no chance ... ...to help to dislodge my eyemake up (I tend to go slightly overboard on my eyeliner) it is important that the material as well as the impregnated solution are gentle. Wiping them over my face a single cloth will remove satisfactorily my makeup, but I always wash with more conventional soap after anyway so I couldnt judge the moisturising properties on this occasion.
So after returning home from a nightshift in the print and mail room Im far too tired ...

Advantages: Refreshing, keeps skin clean, quick, and saves time in cleansing regime... Disadvantages: Nope!
Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes are a product I have been using for quite some time, and I continue to use them for their effective yet 'easy on the skin' cleansing properties. Simple, is run by a larger company - Accandia and is just one of it's titles. They also own Lil lets, Dove cotten wool, and Simple skin defence for men. Simple was launched in 1960, and marketed as a brand that would specifically care for sensitive skin. With over 40 years of ... ...skin. I like this about Simple as it shows you they're not just out to make money and promote their image around town, they really do want to cater for individual skin types too. They have products for oily and combination, dry, sensitive and they also have cleansers etc. for those lucky to be blessed with normal! As well as those, they have treatment products such as cleansing scrubs and facial masks.
The wipes themselves...

Advantages: Soft and gentle on the skin Disadvantages: The wipes are disposible and go into landfill!
Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes are soft, scent free and are white. They remove make up and even waterproof mascara, and they are easy to use on the most the delicate skin such as around the eyes. They are ideal for cleaning the skin in the region of the hairline when you have home dyed your hair. It removes the hair dye very easily. Advantages: results, smell, removes all traces of makeup, Disadvantages: price tag..
Having been despairing for months about my my skin breaking out im spots all the time I was desperate to find a cleanser that was good for my skin type ( annoying combination skin - oily and prone to breakouts but also prone to dryness)
I've tried Boots Cucumber CleansingWipes, SimpleCleansingWipes, Loreal lotion facial Cleanser Olay facial cleanser, Clearasil... despite several months persevering with each different cleanser my skin still didnt improve!
But then I read an article in a magazine about how using 'oil' as a cleanser as the new 'must-have' product.
The theory is:
by cleansing you skin with a regular lotion / wipe / cream... you remove the layer of oil on your skin,
the skin then reacts to this by producing more oil which then leads to the breakouts....
anyway, this Lancome product was listed as an example of one ...
