I suppose this review; will take me back to the days when I was totally hooked on the children's channel nickelodeon. Gosh they really don't make TV programmes like they did back in the 1990's. One of my favourite programmes which aired on Nickelodeon was called Sister, Sister. I actually grew up watching this programme, and although you may think straight way it's a girl's programme, I strongly disagree. It was more a programme for anyone aged between 6 to 19, of any race and any gender. They dealt with topics that any teenager could relate to on a level everyone could understand; it was a shame that they finally ended it. But here's a review about the show itself, the characters, and some of the storylines they dealt with. Hopefully this will bring back some old memories for some people.
Brief Introduction of Nickelodeon: Well seeing as how Nickelodeon was the show that made an aired the programme I thought I would enlighten the reader to a small and brief into about the company. Nickelodeon is an American cable television channel, owned by Viacom International and first established in 1979. However it wasn't until 1981 that executives started using the name Nickelodeon, and from then on they expanded both domestically and globally, in countries like Great Britain and Australia. The company both created and aired many popular shows during the 90's some of which included Sister, Sister; Kenan and Kel, Sabrina and Alec Mack. However Nickelodeon didn't have just one specific channel, instead they broke up their programming into different characteristics and as a result the following channels were created;
- Nicktoons - Nick Jnr - Nick at Night - Teen Nick
They also have channels dedicated to showing teenage movies and sports shows, much like that of our beloved CBBC.
Main Plot for Sister, Sister: As the show was a series their was no one specific storyline as they covered dozens of key topics. However I can give you a history of what the shows premise was and how from their, they managed to create a long run series. In the plot two twins' names Tia Laundry and Tamera Campbell were split at birth and sent to different foster parents. Tia was sent to Lisa Laundry a fashion designer, whilst Tamera was sent to Ray Campbell a widower who owned a limo company. One magical day, whilst shopping for clothes the two twins bump into each other, obviously with some shocking looks on their face, as they were never told they had a twin sister somewhere out their. As a result both foster parents decided it would be best for the girls if they moved into one house and started to get to no one another, all the members now lived in Rays House, and a whole new world was awaiting these two twins.
Their were a number of key plots that the writers used, this was obviously to make younger generation aware of certain dangers that could lead them into the wrong path. In the first season, they dealt with issues such as cheating on school exams, the teenagers first dates and skipping school. These were all issues kids could actually relate to and it made them aware of what could happen as a result of bunking school or cheating. The episode was they bunked school, found them lost in the city with no way to get back home, and being stalked by some loony man that walks around the street. They also dealt with love in several of the episodes throughout the series, the effects of being happy, what can happen if it all goes wrong and so on. However, the main plot which was present throughout the series was these teenagers trying to find their biological parents. I actually thought they dealt with this storyline really smartly and effectively. It portrayed how the kids needed some comfort and closure as to were they came from, whilst also showing how the foster parents felt about the situation, e.g. feeling sad that their kids may no longer consider them their real parents, have to say very well done and something foster children could really relate to.
Characters:
Tia Laundry:
Played by Tia Mowry, this character was the more sophisticated and educated of the twins. Always had her head stuck between a book and always wanted to achieve the best she could in school. She was the top of her class in high school and had hopes of going to Harvard, but was rejected. They actually showed the progressive storyline of this issue, and showed the stress kids can put themselves into trying to be the best in order to get into a top school, and what rejection actually feels like.
Tamera Anne Campbell:
Played by Tamera Mowry, she is the complete opposite of her sister's character. She is the wild child girl, interested in boys and never achieving her best in high school. She takes things less seriously and always tries to get her sister into trouble by dragging her along into some no brain idea. However, we also get to see a side of her which is upset that her parents never praise her even when she tries her best in school. It's the cliché of having a sibling that is better than you at everything and your always seen as second best.
Lisa Laundry:
Played by Emmy award winning actress Jackee Harry, Lisa is a single mother who is a gifted fashion designer. She had struggled as a single mum during the early years of Tia's life, but they managed to get by and found luck when they meet Tamera and Ray. Lisa is in my opinion one of the funniest members of the cast. She always makes a bad situation into a funny one, and her love hate relationship with Ray is clear throughout the series.
Ray Campbell:
Played by Tim Reid, he is a widower who lost his wife when Tamera was a young girl. He currently runs a Limo company, and is the father figure for both the girls. He is the more serious character out of the two parents and he also has a love hate relationship with Lisa
Roger Evans:
Played by Marcus Houston the talented RnB singer, Roger is the boy that lives next door and has a crush on both the sisters. He again is a really funny character always being rejected by the girls and getting into trouble with Ray.
Their were other additional cast members that joined the show during the last seasons, Tia's boyfriend Tyreke and Tamera's boyfriend Jordon. What was so ironic about these characters was that their girlfriends were their total opposites. Tia dating a high school drop out mechanic and Tamera dating a educated, highly gifted college student. One of the episodes also introduced Tahj Tia's cousin, who comes to stay during the Christmas holidays. The Character Is Tia and Tamera's brother in real life and this was the first time he made his TV debut before moving on to smart guy.
Starring:
Tia Mowry Tamera Mowry Tim Reid Jackée Harry Marques Houston (1-4) Anna Slotky (2-3) Britanny Murphy (1-2) RonReaco Lee (6) Deon Richmond (6) Alexis Fields (5-6)
No. of Episodes: 120 which lasted 6 season (1994- 1999) Run Time: 23 Minutes APPROX
Advantages: Similar to real life, covers a number of different issues Disadvantages: Often the same programme is shown a number of times, in just a short time. i.e.3 times in two weeks
Sister Sister is a programme on Nickolodeon and is great for young teenagers. It focuses on everyday life, and things aren't always great as with many tv shows for this age group.
Tia and Tamara are twins and are at high school. They were seperated and adopted at birth. One is very concientious and concentrates on her school work. She always gets good grades. The other likes to go out, and often cheats her way through school, although she always ... ...parties, and having fun.
The twins found each other again and now live together with two adults, Ray and Lisa. Ray is portrayed as being a boring, typical father figure. Lisa is a very wild woman. They both care about Tia and Tamara alot, and do always try and get along!!!
The programme is often funny but there always seems to be morals to the shows, whether its about boys, schoolwork, responsibility, parents or each other there's always something ...

Sister Sister is a great TV show about two teenage twins, dealing with the problems of growing up!!
The twins were put up for adoption when they were born. 1 was adopted by a rich Limo driver (Ray) and the other by a poor clothes designer (Lisa).
The one adopted by Ray is a mature, sensible teenager who is caring, very intelligent and beyond her years.
The one adopted by Lisa is a loud, crazy teenager. She is not as smart, not at all sensible ... ...about them going through life with all the problems of being a teenager!
This show is sutiable for everyone, kids aswell as adults, though the storyline may go over the heads of small children.
I love this show as it is real and great! You'll love it two. ...

Advantages: its funny Disadvantages: after a while they need to repeat shows
I think sister sister is one of the best tv programmes for young teens as it shows twins tia & tamera growing up in a typical american life. There lives involves lots of cute guys and problems with their parents and basically a sneak preview of what life has to offer. This is a typical american comedy show and it is funny at times but can also be very serious, i would recommend this show to anyone around the ages of 9-15 as it can appeal to anyone ...

Advantages: good show Disadvantages: no new episodes
Sistersister is another one of the American Comedy shows shown on the MTV owned channel made for kids Nickelodeon. The show feature twins adopted at birth and rose by their adoptive parents who all then meet and live happily after. The show is and was good although the main fall of this show will have to be that there is deffinetly not going to be any new episodes. This programme has streched thre years showing the many physical changes in the apperance of the twins along with their own character development and emotion change. The show is life-like even though not all of it is, but it is all a great laugh and the characters are botgh lively and talented. ...
