    In the back streets of Manchester at the turn of the 20th century was a family run business named F. H. Royce & Co who made & repaired household electrical domestic products. The main engineer was Frederick Henry Royce (1877-1933) who in his spare time took an interest in cars. At the turn of the 20th century motorised cars were relatively new & extremely temperamental & unreliable. He was rather disappointed at this & felt as an engineer he could do a better job.
