"Skala for a relaxing holiday."

View down from Old Skala.

View down from Old Skala.

We had been to Kefalonia about 14 years ago, our first experience of Greece, when re stayed at Lassi.

This time it would be Skala as Family/Friends going there for birthday.anniversery celebrations.

We stayed at the Hotel Anassas (seperate review, also reviews on Tavernas The Pines, Paspallis, Sunrise and the Boat Trips)

Skala is a seaside town, very Tourist Focused, so if looking for a real Greek Experience then prob elsewhere, but those places are fast disappearing.
The main street that climbs up a gentle rise is lined both sides with Tavernas, Bars and typical Tourist Shops.
Half way up the street is FOUNTAIN Square, (Fountain was empty when we were there), also here is the Main Church, well worth a visit.
Also the usual KIOSK that sells Papers/Fags/Sweets etc, also a good place to check on local Bus Times.

Off the side streets are more Tavernas, sometimes a better deal as most Brits tend to pile into the first ones they see.

Around the back streets are Two Large Health Centres so no need to worry if you have a need of medical attention.

Skala is on the South of Kefalonia. It is level walking along most of the front, going up a slight hill at the Western End as you leave Skala towards Poros, a very pleasant drive with little traffic for those wanting to explore.

The Beach is one of those that looks great on Photos, but is more GRIT than Sand, an advantage to sun bathers as it is easy to wipe off, but not so good for the Bucket/Spade youngsters, also not good for walking on as you tend to sink down all the time, not firm..

Towards the east end past the Taxi Rank the Beach is slightly sandier but not much, you need to go to Turtle Beach around the headland to get sandier.

There are plenty of Sunbeds available, ranging from 5 to 6 Euros for a set of two beds and an umbrella.
First week we were there some were not even charging.

The Sea for bathing was a bit chilly but shelves away very quickly so out of your depth within 10 yards.

Between where the main street meets the beach road (which is not very busy) and the west end where the road starts to climb there is a proper pavement, so very safe to walk along.
There are Hotels and Tavernas along the length of the road, so if staying at the west end you have many places within a couple of mins walk.

There is a Boat that operates trips to Ithica, Fiskardo and Zante as well as Beach BBQ trips in season.
There is a Speed boat setup that operates the Banana Trip and other thrill rides.

Skala is the new Town built after the 1953 Earthquake destroyed the old Village of Skala that is high on the hill behind Skala.
They say you can walk up in an Hour, I think you would have to be very fit to do it in that time. It is drivable up so I would say if you have that option use it, or even have a Taxi up and walk down.

At the top you can see the remains of old Skala. When up there we saw the largest Goats I have ever seen in Greece. They were hiding in an old ruin, prob because the Taverna up there seemed to feature Goat very much on their menu.

So all in all Skala is quite a safe Option, lots on the leval for those with Walking Difficulties. Not rowdy at night so more of an Elderly and Family resort. So I can understand why people who we talked to seemed to have returned year after year.

We ourselves take the view each place we go to seems to have a beauty and character of its own, and there is another waiting to be discovered next year.

Transfer time form the Airport just over an hour.

Kefalonia is one of the dearer Islands, certainly dearer than those on the Eastern side of Greece.

Average Meal at night with Wine etc about 70-80 Euros (Paspallis the exception about 55-60)
Where as in Thassos last year about 55 was the Average
