Around this time last year i went around some of the banks in Southport to compare the different current accounts that they all offered. I had already previously been in Natwest, Halifax, Barclays, Lloyds TSB, Nationwide, and then I decided to go to Skipton Building Society to see what they could offer me. From the outside the place looked fairly nice, although on a grotty street, I had previously heard good reports of Skipton Building Society, and someone did recommend me on their current account.
So I went inside, and noticed that the place was fairly understaffed, and talked to the cashier: I asked "Hello, i was wondering if you have any current accounts that I could apply for" "NO" was the reply given to me by a rough looking middle aged woman. I just walked out of the branch and never returned, i dont think I need to explain what was wrong with that. It's not just the customer services that annoyed me, the general state of the branch was quite a mess aswell: It was seriously understaffed, only one person was available - and much use she was! and was generally a mess - leaflets scattered around on the floor, not a nice place to visit at all.
When I returned home I looked at the Skipton Building Society website, and looked at the different accounts available. I saw that there was quite a selection of accounts that were available to me, and this clearly shows that the customer services at Skipton Building Society is just completely appaling as they did not offer me any advice what-so-ever, and instead talked to me inpolitely, and giving the impression that she couldnt care less.
From an op. i read on Skipton Building Society before, it seems that the place is fairly unpopular, and they really do need to get their act together, I certainly wont be paying a visit to a Skipton Society branch ever again, and I advise you not to aswell.
Advantages: Supposedly a mutual society, with some good accounts which they must 'forget' to tell suffering customers about Disadvantages: Who ever heard of a society which doesn't deal in cash? Or one which wants all members to have 2.5K to keep in a low paying account just to keep it open?
The Skipton has been hit hard by the carpetbaggers. To try and deter them, this society has made the minimum opening balances extreamly high, and has been forced to cut some of it's savings rates on the most popular accounts. This is a shame, as it is going against all the principles of a buildingsociety.
For example, a saver with over 2K in the society's High Street account (the ordinary buildingsociety account with instant access using a passbook), will earn just over 1% gross. After tax, this amount is eating away at your money, and is nowhere near inflation. It's only when the balance gets very high (we're talking 25K here), that the interest rate becomes mildly attrcative (4.5% or so). A saver with £100+ in Yorkshire's Access Saver will earn just under 5% gross. Also, the account has a minimum transaction of £500. All ...
Advantages: Good Current Account Disadvantages: Customer Services enough to put you off
, and stormed out of the store.
I suppose it could have just been a busy day, but the customer services there pretty bad. The man that served me gave the impression that he couldn?t be bothered, and the lady in front of me, who asked the same man about mortgages was also pretty annoyed as the man had absolutely no clue about mortgages, and rushed round the store for about 10 minutes trying to find someone that did. But as they were all busy, he returned later on to tell the woman that no-one was available at the moment, and could she come back in about 2 hours or so. I thought that was pretty dam cheeky as well.
Halifax should definitely sort their customer services out, because of all the banks I?ve been in, I would say that Halifax?s customer services is the worst but one (that being SkiptonBuildingSociety of course) I have ever seen ...

Advantages: Fast site, easy to navigate and cheaper than dealing by telephone Disadvantages: Some areas of site occasionally unavailable
I became a customer of TD Waterhouse by default some years ago, when they bought out Sharedeal, which was previously owned by the SkiptonBuildingSociety. TD Waterhouse is a subsidiary of the Canadian based Toronto-Dominion Bank, and it has further websites in Luxembourg (called Internaxx), Canada and the USA. Until about six months ago, before we were on the Internet, I had only dealt over the telephone. I decided to register with the online service partly because the commission fees are lower, but mainly because you have the freedom of dealing exactly when you want to - it's quite easy to lose out on a good price whilst waiting to get through to a dealer.
The registration process is extremely simple. On telephoning a designated customer services line, you are given a unique user number, together with a log-in password consisting ...
