For a long time I refused to get Sky+ because I said we'd never use it. After giving in to pressure and having it installed I cant believe we ever managed without it. There are very few programmes I watch 'live' anymore.
The Sky + box comes with a hard drive that will store approximately 40 hours of TV, which is more than enough for most people, you would need to be an exteme TV watcher to fill the drive, or be the type of person who saves programmes to watch over again.
The best feature of the Sky+ is the ability to pause live TV, very handy if the phone rings or someone comes to the door. You can also rewind live TV, so if you miss what someone has said you can rewind to hear it again.
The Sky+ box has parental controls, so all adult channels can be blocked and a PIN number can be set so children cant watch films that are too old for them.
The box can record two simultaneous programmes, if you are watching a different channel you can only record one programme. However, you can record two programmes and watch a prerecorded programme at the same time.
When I got Sky + installed I found it was much cheaper to go to a ASA (Authorised Service Agent) than to Sky direct. Sky were charging £75 to have it installed, the ASA charged only £45 which included the box and the installation.
Currently Sky are charging £99 if you sign up online and £150 if you sign up over the phone. My local ASA are charging £49 for the same thing. So it may be worth ring round a few aerial companies before deciding to phone Sky.
If you want to use the recording facilities for the Sky + box you either need to be a Sky subscriber, or you have to pay £10 a month to Sky for the privilege.

In two minds about Sky. On one hand, I don't watch much telly, so you could say I wouldn't benefit from Sky. On the other hand, maybe I don't watch telly because there's not much variety, in which case Sky would solve all my problems. Either way, I think I'd want to go for the option to record.

Advantages: I have clearer tv than the terrestrial signal Disadvantages: I pay over the odds and now believe I would have gotten a better deal going through virgins tv box
