SKY PLUS
Move over sliced bread, there's a new kid on the block!
From now on I will describe things that are good,as the best thing since Sky Plus!
I'm of an age to have been around for the first of the Ferguson video players (as so wonderfully described by the brilliant Peter Kay). There was no remote control- you had to walk over to the machine to do all the recordings, and the amount of times we settled down to watch a film my better (?!?) half had recorded only to find a recording of something completely different.
My goodness didn't we think we were something, with our mock leather video covers that held recordings of Corrie and the likes!
But know videos and video recorders are a thing of the past and will soon be appearing on the Antiques Roadshow.
The advent of recording onto DVD seemed to be a very short love affair with the British people; but as for the new means of recording - PVR - that has taken over, it really is the bee's knees.
A PVR (personal video recorder) or DVR (digital video recorder) records video in a digital format to a disk drive or other memory medium within a device. The term includes stand-alone set-top boxes, and software for personal computers which enables video capture and playback
to and from disk. Some consumer electronic manufacturers have started to offer
Sky + is, arguably, the most popular of this system; it was launched in September 2001 and basically allows the user to record, pause and instantly rewind live TV. The system performs these functions using an internal hard drive inside the Sky+ set top box.
Other companies running similar systems in the UK market the Freeview+ PVR, BT Vision, and Virgin Media's V+. Sky reported in February 2008 that over 3 million households now have a Sky+ box.
Sky + has come along way from when you could first record of Sky, then you had to record what you were watching or leave that channel on whilst it was recording if you were going out.
SO WHAT DOES IT DO?
Well that little box is just pure magic!
Firstly Sky + gives you the capability to record television programmes straight onto your Sky+ box , it is possible to store up to 40 hours of programmes. You can also record two programmes at the same time.
Gone are the days of having to programme in all sorts of details ( often wrongly), recording with Sky+ could not be easier - when I say it is at the press of a button, that is exactly what it is. You just need to look through the on screen programme guide, choose a show you'd like to watch later and press the record button on your remote control - even my better half manages it!! If programmes are on each week you can set a 'series link' so that every episode is recorded.
Watching the programmes back is just as easy, all the programmes that you record are stored in your Sky+ box and accessed through the on-screen planner.
You just have to Just highlight the programme that you want to watch and press 'play'- it's a doddle!
On top of the recording facility another great thing about Sky + is that you can pause and restart ANY programme that you're watching - ideal if the phone goes just at an exciting part of the programme you're watching.
You can even rewind live TV for whenever you want if you missed something.

The Sky + box is £49 and £60 set up. The HD + box is £49 or free If signing up to Sky Movies HD or a year , set up is £30 or £15 if you take a new Multiroom subscription.
IN CONCLUSION
We have had our Sky + box now for eighteen months and I could not imagine life now without it!
Most of our viewing is from programmes stored on the box, we can watch what we want when we want.
The storage capacity is good and so far it has proved to be 100% reliable. In my opinion, this is THE way to watch television, and with the TV Digital changeover, now is the time to take the leap.

The future of TV is plus shaped
