Slazenger V100 Classic Cricket Bat Full Size

Slazenger V100 Classic Cricket Bat Full Size

First impressions

The look and feel of a willow cricket bat is always very satisfying. The willow is treated with raw linseed oil, and this acts as a protective coating and adds strength to the bat. The Slazenger brand is very well-known, not just in cricket but in many other sports.

In terms of looks we have a black and red design on the pale willow background. This works well, and the design is simple enough. To the rear of the bat is a fancier design, with the large Slazenger logo. The only red on the design is the ‘V’, which is part of the ‘V100’ model. This is a simple bat with a simple design. The design does change with the different models in the V100 range, but the black and red theme largely remains.

My experience

The cricket bat doesn’t come with any specific information regarding its manufacture. Some sources online state that the V100 range is made from English Willow, though other sources state it is made from Kashmir Willow, so all I am aware of is that the type of wood selected is willow, and this is typical for a cricket bat and very traditional. Willow is chosen because it is very tough and shock-resistant. It is also strong enough to withstand the impact of a cricket ball at high speed, not splitting or denting but absorbing the impact.

This bat is lightweight and is designed for ‘destructive precision’. This would be a good bat for power shots, sweeps and just big hitters in general. I found that the bat was such a light weight that it didn’t feel comfortable, and I never ‘felt’ as though I could achieve the big power shots with no momentum behind shots. Precision and control is possible, but I do not see this as an ideal bat for every big hitter.

The linear design enables the user to cut through the air easily, but this could be said of most bats, at least most adult bats. The rubber grip is absolutely fine to play with, though some players prefer to use their own brand, and the professionals often simply disregard any grip and apply their own.

The strong grip handle and bow in the at make the confidence shots very easy to make, and with an extended sweet spot due to the longer sweeping curve you have a little more margin for error. The light weight of this bat could encourage your helicopter arm to be more active, and the weight could certainly have a baring on your shot selection as you can be more creative, though you will also need to follow it through with a little more power, as from my experience the lighter construction doesn’t simply repel the ball.

Price and availability

The Slazenger V100 range consists of a number of bats, and your budget will be accommodated from £40 upwards. The V100 G1 will set you back over £300, and the V100 range is vast. Whichever model you choose, ensure you read the reviews on each model in the range and fully understand what you are buying, especially if buying an expensive bat, something can be an expensive mistake if not done correctly. Online is your best bet for a good price.

Final thoughts

This is a versatile bat, but it is designed with players in mind that like to try different shots. If you wish to stand there and play the odd big shot then you will want a heavier bat, and this is more of a one day or Twenty20 bat in my opinion. Still, for the affordable price of around £40 this is not a bat to be dismissed.
