Serenity

Advantages: Spot on performances, well written, special effects.
Disadvantages: May lack something without knowlege of the tv series.

Films based upon television shows are always awkward. The transition for a largely successfully show is relatively easy as you already have an established audience. But what do you do with a show that was watched by so few viewers that it was cancelled after a mere 11 episodes had aired? This is what Universal is facing with Serenity, a continuation of Joss Whedon's failed Firefly series. Obviously they saw something in the series that would translate to a successful film. I'm not quite sure what it was, because while Serenity will work rather well for fans, it's just not going to appeal to a wider audience. Of course, the appeal of the film is somewhat irrelevant. The important issue is how good the finished product is. This is a considerably trickier question to answer though. For the sake of full disclosure, I was a fan ...

Serenity? nothing serene here!

Advantages: Superb characters, great action, tremendous effects, everything!
Disadvantages: not a one from me.

. Fortunately Firefly was the recipient of some glowing reviews, word of mouth and phenomenal sales figures for the DVD box set and a writer/director who wanted to continue his story. Three years later the story of Firefly continues on the big screen with?? Serenity, the name of their ship! The Film Serenity carries on from where the film left off, but don't worry if you haven't seen the series as the prologue manages to not only show the fans something we haven't seen before but to also bring the newcomers up to date with the world and background to the main plot in a few short minutes. It is a bit 'mechanical' but it is also very necessary. I would rather them do that then take a long time introducing things to new viewers and slowing the pace down, a wow does his film zip about and along! Serenity is a space western at heart; it has that ...

Not Peaceful, Not Serene. Serenity

Advantages: Cracking, action filled, yet thought provoking film
Disadvantages: Of perhaps limited appeal to non-science fiction fans. Somewhat violent in places

Ever seen a series called Firefly? There's a pretty good chance that not only have you not seen it, but until this year, you'd never heard of it. That's because it only ran for 15 episodes (including the two part pilot...which was actually broadcast last), despite generally good critical reception and fan appeal. However, soundly beating Star Trek to the prize for 'movie based on a series with the shortest broadcast run', this autumn Serenity came to our screens. (As an aside, if you live in the States, you can see Firefly on Fridays on the Sci-Fi Channel. It's also out on DVD as a box set with the full run of episodes). Whilst Serenity is not only based on, but, in fact, is a direct sequel to Firefly, it is not necessary to have seen the series in order to understand and enjoy the film. I have seen part of one or two episodes ...
