I am constantly on a mission to lose weight. Not a lot, about 14lbs would do. Unfortunately, as the years pass by my waistline continues to thicken and I have now reached the miserable stage where I have a wardrobe full of clothes that won't fit me anymore!! The trouble is, I love my food just too much!
Wandering around my local Tesco a couple of weeks ago, I was spotted a 'special offer' on some Slim Fast Real Fruit Smoothies. Tesco were claiming that they normally retail for £1.29 each but they were on offer of three for two. Not one to let a bargain pass me by, I swiftly placed three of them in my trolley.
I wasn't able to read the (vast) list of ingredients before I bought them, as unfortunately, I didn't have my glasses with me at the time. No matter, I was sure that they would be fine and contain no nasty additives! I unpacked my shopping when I got home and my daughter quickly spied the hour-glass shaped plastic screw topped bottles and asked, "what have you bought now, mum?" I explained about them 'special offer' etc., and as I popped the kettle on to boil, she began to read out loud to me just what it was I had purchased.
Top of the list was water! Not a surprise really, I thought, but then she went on to read that they also contain thickener, stabilisers and artificial sweeteners. The actual amount of fruit each smoothie contains is a mere 9% - even I was shocked! They also contain milk protein (yoghurt) and this makes up 5% of the actual product. Anyone who is diabetic, breastfeeding or pregnant is also advised against consuming these diet aids. Apparently they come in three different flavours, raspberry, fruits of the forest and peach and mango. Tesco only had raspberry and fruits of the forest in stock, so I'd bought 2 of the former and one of the latter.
My daughter announced that in her opinion they were "gross" and full of rubbish and that she'd rather have the real thing. I put them all in the fridge and took one to work the following day to have instead of my usual Gregg's baguette. They are supposed to act as a meal replacement and fill you up just as a 'normal' meal would, however, I wasn't convinced as I have a very healthy appetite.
By 12.30pm the following day I went to the fridge in our office and unscrewed the plastic led from my little smoothie. Each bottle is rather on the large side and contains 325ml. I suppose that if you don't want it all at once the advantage of the screw top is that you can pop it back in the fridge again to drink later. However, as it's supposed to be a meal replacement, I decided to drink the whole lot in one fell swoop! My colleagues made some remarks about what I'd brought in for lunch and as a couple of them were eating hot Gregg's cheese pasties at the time, and it was cold grey miserable and wet outside as I looked out of the window, it just didn't 'feel' right, drinking my raspberry smoothie.
I poured it into a glass and immediately noticed how thick and gloopy the mixture was. It was a fairly bright pink colour and smelled okay, quite bland really, but not all fruity. Taste-wise it was okay, but nothing special. There was a (very faint) aftertaste of bitterness, as though the raspberries they'd used had been a little under-ripe. It was fairly sweet and pleasant enough but after about half a glass I started to feel a little sickly. I put it down on my desk and read a magazine and came back to it a bit later, sipping slowly all the time. It took me a good half hour to finish it and by the time I had I felt bloated rather than pleasantly full.
I have to say that it filled me up for hours and hours. So much so, that by the time I got home from work I still did not feel the need to rush about and prepare the tea, as I'm usually starving by the time I get home and nibble everything in sight as soon as I enter the house, and this is my downfall, really.
The following day I took the fruits of the forest variety to work and again I felt pretty bloated afterwards and even a little sluggish as it filled me up so much. The fruits of the forest was a little nicer to taste, if I'm honest and was much darker in colour and tasted as though it contained more fruit - although when I looked at the ingredients I saw it was the same as the raspberry variety.
I have by now eaten all three of them. I haven't lost any weight and I have to say that I agree wholeheartedly with my daughter, in that I would prefer to make my own. Homemade smoothies are ridiculously easy to make yourself , at a fraction of the cost, and so much better for you. None of those nasty additives and preservatives. I will continue to look for the 'miracle diet food' that will rid me of my spare tyre and bulging bottom, and in the meantime, I won't be buying any more of Slim Fast Real Fruit Smoothies.
Advantages: It really does fill you up!! I felt full after nine hours Disadvantages: Limited range that's not suitable for all!!
...I was never really a slim fast fan until one of my friends convinced me to go ahead and try this one. When I saw these Slim fast smoothies advertised in my local boots store on a 3 for 2 offer at £2.15 in total, it was an promotional offer I could not refuse. ~Pre-amble~

Advantages: Easy and tasty Disadvantages: Not always satisfying
I think this is a useful product in a weight loss plan, but with only in particular circumstances. I did not find it a satisfying meal substitute if I had significant time to sit down and relax for lunch: in such cases I found myself wanting more, even though it is reasonably filling. However, on days where I was busy at work, and I didn't have long to break or I ate as I carried on working, I found this to be a really good product.
