I was quite excited when I saw the tv ad for new slimfast soup. I had tried the milkshakes and liked them, but the thought of something savoury available as well made the prospect of dieting much less daunting.
As soon as I went to do my weekly shopping at ASDA, I made a bee line for the "slimming" section - and sure enough they had begun to stock the new SLIMFAST soups.

At the time there were four flavours available- Wild mushroom with croutons, creamy chicken, and country spring vegetable and finally meditteranean tomato....they sounded delicious!

They were being sold in cartons containing three sachets, unfortunately all of one flavour, but as they were only asking £1.80 for a carton I didn't mind. 60p for a complete meal cannot be bad...or so I thought!

I opted for the yummy sounding wild mushroom and the creamy chicken variety.
The instructions were very easy to follow...it was just a case of emptying a sachet into a soup bowl or a large mug...adding 250ml of boiling water that has been left to cool for a couple of minutes, stirring well, leaving to stand for another couple of minutes..and enjoying!

I followed the instructions carefully and made myself the wild mushroom and crouton version. It certainly looked thick and creamy, and a beautifully dark brown mushroomy colour-unlike most packet or cup soups.
I put a large spoonful into my mouth and EUCCCHHHHHH!!! It was absolutely revolting. It had a kind of sweet sickly flavour and a really cloying texture that clung to the roof of your mouth. I ate as much as I could manage because I was really hungry and didn't have time to prepare anything else. The croutons were hard and tasted burnt, and as I got nearer to the end of the bowl,I started to find great big lumps of un-mixed powder. I had honestly followed their instructions to the letter and had stirred it really well!

I gave it one more chance and tried the creamy chicken flavour that was just as revolting...the pieces of chicken were more like bits of leather string and was full of powdery lumps as well.
I didn't bother trying the any of the other flavours, they could be delicious for all I know - but I seriously doubt it.

A great idea though, a hearty soup that contains less than 250 calories per bowl and a good price too..shame their inedible. Stick to the milkshakes they really are lovely and satisfying.

Although I didn't manage to eat the entire bowl of soup..I found that I felt hungry again in a hour..I find the milkshakes see me through for 4 hours plus.
