I joined Slimming World earlier this year after recommendations from friends. I will admit right here my willpower is very poor, and I love food, so the normal calorie counting diets that have forbidden foods never work for me as I can never eat enough of the foods that I like.
It is 6.95 to join, and then 3.25 each week after that. Unless you make prior arrangements with the class leader, any weeks that you do not attend still have to be paid for before you can be readmitted to the class.
Going into the class for the first time was horrible. Everyone seemed to know each other or be there with a friend, but I knew I had to go through with it, and if it meant sitting on my own for an hour then I would do it.
The leader Joy, a past member, and also now a regional manager held a chat for newbies and explained how Slimming World worked. The diet works around a system called Food Optimising. It has been planned by trained nutritionalists, and you choose each day to be either green or original. The whole eating plan is based around the idea of healthy eating that can become part of your lifestyle rather than a diet which is restrictive.
Each of the 2 days has a lost of free foods, which generally include fruit and vegetables, plus on a green day your other free foods are pasta, rice, potato, noodles, and on your original day the free foods are basically meat, of the fat free variety! You should fill up on these foods when hungry. You could eat a whole chicken minus the skin if the mood took you! Then you choose from the Healthy Extras menu, which ensures you get the vitamins and minerals necessary for good health, and also this gives you the chance to add meat to a green day or pasta/rice to your original day, and this ensures that you can eat pretty standard meals. Then the section that helps to keep you on the straight and narrow is the Sins. You are allowed between 5 and 15 sins a day, and they include crisps, chocolate and alcohol etc.
It sounds confusing, but after a couple of reads the book you get when you join makes sense, and in my 1st week I lost 3lbs. I have now come to a standstill but this is not the fault of Slimming World, it is down to me, and the fact that my body is reacting to the carbohydrates in the food I eat, so at the moment (and surprisingly on the recommendation of my doctor) I am reading up about the Atkins diet and will keep you updated on my progress.
I digressed a moment there so back to Slimming World. There is a monthly magazine which has lots of recipes and motivational stories. It is £2.10 in the shops, however at class it is only £1.40, which is a great saving. In class you can also buy recipe books and low sin sweets.
The website is excellent. www.slimming-world.co.uk, and there are lots of hints and tips, and also a chat room. I still log in regularly to see if any new recipes have been added or to read the newest success stories.
Please try it, you do not need to change your eating habits totally, and they are proven to work. If you are shy try and take a friend along with you to make it less of an ordeal, but don't put it off a moment longer.

I'm doing Jenny Craig at the moment but like you say I'm a lover of good food as well and the fact that just about everything is forbidden is a real test of my willpower. Thanks for sharing, Ü Debs

I find the cost of the classes is one reason why I don't go to something like this, I just couldn't afford it!
